Wheaton Mars Indian Record The Wheaton Knights kept the pressure on full tilt throughout the game to defeat highly touted North wood, 5044, In the big surprise of the Class AA Montgomery County Bas ketball League action last week end. The contest was played at Northwood, where the home fans watched in disappointment as the favored Indians were un able to get going and dropped their first tilt of the season. Coach Paul Bolyard said notiiing seemed to go right for his Northwood quintet, especially In the closing min utes of the game when the Indians were only one point behind with two minutes re maining on the clock. “The boys put the ball up in the area of the basket,” Bolyard says, “but it just didn’t go in. It was just one of those nights a coach dreads and Is always glad when it’s over.” For Wheaton, it was an eve ning of jubiliation. The Knights had suffered two setbacks in a row in pre-season tilts in De cember just before heading into the regular league play and were underdogs in the contest with Northwood. Wheaton Coach Walt Du pee said it was the best team ef fort he has seen by a Knights team since he has been with the school. The coach says his boys played hard and were in high spirits throughout the game. Despite Northwoods’ bad night, they did make a game H •%■ mt jt , vdßr - j’S Ik jr W* MfcmmwL. j§mb| yrj r Higjftt ► *i Si jgm J jMHßjdflHßt :$>- *'- fIL& gF /_ IBaLJIB- .-. fife St MJF f e i / ■ C£s*H&k M |B|| W Ht | jBKk jflHH /T||. £• t ■Hr Hfc . •.• HR , One in a Crowd BUI Barnes (No. 85) of Walter Johnson leaps up to snag a rebound under Blair’s basket In the first period of WJ’s same with the Blazers at Blair. It may well prove to be one of the toughest ball game on tomorrow night’s schedule. Wheaton, who surprised Mont gomery County League fans test weekend by downing the Northwood Indians, 5044, face a scrappy quintet when they take on the W-J Spartans. Blair Victorious as Northwood Loses of it as far the score went, right up until the final moment of play. Northwood led at the half, 24-22, but fell victim to the fast moving Knights shortly after the second half got started. Without a doubt, the star of the evening was Wheaton’s John Tinker, a sophomore, who racked up 17 points in the encounter, his first varsity game. Tinker clinched the victory for the Indians with a minute remaining, tossing in two free throws to give his team a 4544 advantage. Curtiss Norland, who achieved a game total of 11 points, also scored the Indians’ final three tallies of the eve ning. Northwood was hindered in the tilt somewhat by the ab sence of versatile Scott Mac- Dougal, 6-4, who has been rack ing up 16 counters per contest. MacDougall has been ill for some weeks now and has not practiced with the team since before Christmas. Bolyard says his squad hit only 28 per cent of their shots in the contest and that they were so sold at one point that they scored only seven points In one particular 10-minute period. As for Dupee, he feels the action last weekend indicates it is going to be a tough season for all the squads and that com petition will be more spirited than most people thought a month ago. Bolyard agrees. weekend, but lost out in the final moments, 5045. The Sparians have been rugged thus far this year and might well have defeated Blair except for a last minute spurt by the champs. As it was, they had the Blair quintet sweating right up until the final whistle. Since both Wheaton and W-J are strong contenders for the Class AA title this season, the outcome of the tilt tomorrow , night could well be an indicator of just how things are going to shape up in the league this sea son. Montgomery Avenue Rockville, Maryland GA. 4-7700 Blazers to Meet RM Tomorrow Unbeaten Montgomery Blair takes on Richard Montgomery tomorrow evening on the Blair court, as the MB Blazers con tinue their quest to retain the basketball crown they won last year. The defending champs now have five wins and no losses, their most important victory being over Walter Johnson, 50- 45. Blair has sparked the Imagination and enthusiasm of home rooters by coming out strong in the current sea son, after being considered the underdog to Northwood In pre-season figuring. Coach Ed Moffatt’s Blazers look as if they will emerge un defeated in the second round of play, facing Sherwood after Richard Montgomery. Neither RM or Sherwood figure to out score the defending champions. The contest last weekend with the WJ Spartans, as fore cast, was a nip-and-tuck battle all the way. The Spartans were right on the heels of Blair until the final minutes of the contest when Blair went in front, 4241, on George Patterson’s free throw. Walter Robertson and Mark Kromer then added layups in quick succession to tie the game up for the champs. 50- 45. As the final score indicates, the contest was anything but an easy win. The score changed hands 15 times, as the Blair strategy of a slow-down con trolled ball game paid off against the run-and-shoot at tack of WJ. Indicative of how close the contest was is the fact that Blair had 22 field goals to 19 for WJ, while the Spartans had seven tallies from the foul line as compared to six for the champs. The halftime score in Ihe \ close tilt was 22-22. Top men in the scoring de partment for Blair were Pat- terson and Ruhling with 12 markers each, and Robertson with 10 counters. Robertson and Ridding scored all their points on field goals. For the Spartans, it was Fair banks with 14 points and Beebe with 12. Each player collected five field goals. Despite the surge the victory gave to the Blazers’ prospects for repeating as champs this season, Moffatt wasn’t alto gether happy with his squad’s performance. He felt their play was below par part of the tilt B-CC vs Northwood Is Game of Week Probably the most thrilling and tell-tale game this week end will be the clash between Bethesda-Chevy Chase and the Northwood Indians on the B-CC court. Northwood dropped the league opener to a fired-up Wheaton squad, 5044, last weekend and is certain to be out to keep in the running for the AA crown by defeating B-CC. B-CC should be just as fired up for the game as Northwood, since the Bethesda-Chevy Chase squad whipped Richard Mont gomery handily last weekend for their first league win of the season. With the champions, Blair, facing what should be an easy time against Richard Mont gomery tomorrow night, and with Wheaton in a crucial battle with Walter Johnson, a lot of what happens in the league this season will hinge on the outcome of the B-CC and Northwood meeting. Should Northwood lose t p B-CC, the effect on the competi tion this season would be tumul and said they would have to do better if they were to get through the season In style. However, the Blair quintet must have hit their stride on Saturday as they walked all over Gonzaga, 62-46, In a make-up, non-league encoun* , ter. High for Blair against Gon zaga was Roth with 15 points, followed by Ruhllng with 11 counters. Gonzaga’s top scorers were Vail with 16 and Rubino with 12. tous. The Indians, with a good number of last season’s playem back, have figured to be the toughest team to beat But in what appeared to be an off night they dropped their league opener and scored poorly throughout the tilt B-CC on the other hand had no trouble with RM and would have to be considered a serious threat to Blair’s determination to retain the AA crown If they are victorious over Northwood. One thing is certain In the B-CC and Northwood encoun ter: the Indians are going to have to figure out some strategy to tie up Bryant Agnew or B-CC may run away with the game. Agnew was mainly responsible for last weekend’s easy win over Richard Montgomery. Of the same token, if Scott MacDougal is back with North wood after a period of illness,*, the BCC players will have their' hands full trying to tie him up. MacDougal has been a scoring standout for Northwood this season, averaging some 16 points in pre-season games.
