'Religious Affairs Temple Israel Launches New Sanctuary Program Construction of a new sanc tuary and social hall of Temple Israpl in Silver Spring was for mally inaugurated last Sunday with a consecration service on the synagogue grounds at 420 University Blvd. The service was conducted by Rabbi Lewis Weintraub and Cantor Louis Teichmen and featured a talk by William C. Levy, president of Temple Israel. Nelson Stelngard, chair man of the building committee, presided. Designed by the architectural firm of Werner-Dyer and Asso ciates, the new building will cost about $450,000 according to present plans. Among features will be 420 permanent seats in an area which can be opened into a social hall with an addi tional 700 seats. The new structure will be connected by an enclosed breeze-way to the existing Temple Israel, which will be used in the future as a religious school building. Musical Program Set A special secular program will be held at the Georgia Ave nue Christian Church on Sun day at 8 p.m., featuring Pearl Watterworth, lyric soprano, and John Holland, organist. Mrs. Watterworth has en gaged in an extensive musical program during which she studied under the direction of an authority of the Lansing Conservatory of Music in Mich igan along with other leading musical Instructors. Holland is an organ major at Columbia Union College in Takoma Park. A reception will be held after the program, during which an offering will be taken for the church organ fund. Glenmont Benefit The Men’s Club of the Glen mont Methodist Church in Wheaton will present an orig inal musical comedy, “A Is For Atom," at the Belt Junior High School on May 9, 10 and 11 at 8:30 p.m. The performance represents the fourth annual play written, directed and produced by mem bers of the Men’s Club and the church. Proceeds will be de voted to varying phases of the church program. Winners Elected Three prize winners In the Church School Lenten Art Con test at the Church of the Ascen sion in Silver Spring have been selected by contest officials. More than 75 students in the Ascension church school enter ed the contest, based on the theme of “Why I Attend Church.” Award winners in cluded Sharon Pohl, of the primary division in the first grade, first prize; Darcey Spald ing, first grade pupil in the primary division, chosen for a special award In originality, and Kevin Donovan, of the fifth grade, winner of the inter mediate division first prize. Young Adults Active The Dickerson Methodist Church Young Adults, organ ized in November of last year with 12 members, have planned a public auction at the church on May 18 to further their fund raising program. The group has appealed for a contribution or articles that can be placed on sale during the day-long program, which will also feature a luncheon and sale of homemade baked goods. Attends Conclave Rabbi Tzvi H. Porath, of the Montgomery County Jewish Community, Inc., will be among rabbis from the Washington area who will participate in the 63rd annual convention of the Rabbinical Assembly at the Pioneer Country Club In New York May 5-9. "Jewish Tradition and the Contemporary World’’ will be the theme of the convention, which will be featured by a dis cussion of varied contemporary issues including the conflict be tween church and state. In this category, principal features will include federal aid to parochial education and prayers and Bible reading in the public schools. Church Comedy Set The Men’s Club of St. Paul’s Methodist Church in Kensing ton will present the comedy “You Can't Take it With You” on successive weekends as a feature of its 10th annual play production. The performance will be offered May 10 and 11, and again on May 17 and 18, with all proceeds to, be devoted to church activities. To Attend Assembly Representatives of two Mont gomery County churches will be among the eight Washing ton-area churchmen participat ing in the 175th United Presby terian General Assembly in Des Moines, lowa, May 16-22. Local participants will in clude Harry W. McGinniss, Kensington, and Daniel R. Muller, Rockville, who are rul ing elders in their home churches. Evangelistic Program Rev. W, Dale Rhome, pastor of the Free Methodist Church In Williamsport, Pa., is partici pating this week in a series of evangelistic services at the Spencervllle Free Methodist Church. Services, which began last Sunday, are being held nightly at 7:30 except Saturday and will continue until next Sunday. Open to anyone who might de sire to attend, they are sponsor ed by the Free Methodist Youth. Dance Benefit Temple Shalom will present the Batya Heller Studio of Dance in a benefit program at the Rockville Civic Auditorium May 19. The program for chil dren will include “Pocahan tas,” and an adaptation of “If I Ran the Zoo,” by Dr. Seuss. Barron Bott Maberry, holder of a bachelor of divinity degree from Lutheran Theolog ical Seminary, Gettysburg, Pa., will become pastor of St. Steph en Lutheran Church in Silver Spring Sunday at 4 p.m. The new minister will be In stalled in ceremonies to be con duedte by Dr. J. Frank Fife, president of the Maryland Syn od of the Lutheran Church, who also will speak. Also participat ing in the program will be Rev. Donald C. Brake, a colleage of the Rev. Mr. Maberry, who will present the charge to him. The Rev. Mr. Maberry, 29, is a native of Schulkill Haven, Pa., and the father of two chil dren. Before attending the theological seminary, he receiv ed a Bachelor of Arts degree from Gettysburg College and currently is taking post-gradu ate courses at the seminary to qualify for a Master in Sacred Theology degree. A member of the Committee on American Missions of the Maryland Synod, the Rev. Mr. Maberry succeeds Rev. Edward L.
