3b*asMl§rt^ Sports Tuesday, December 31, 19&) Damascus, Now 6-1, Has Matured, Says Coach Four more victories and Damascus will have satisfied coach Mike Rlmmey 1 s preseason expectations. Chances are those victories will come very quickly and before the Hornets have stopped winning they will have exceeded the wishes of the coach who was hoping for a .500 season in early December. Damascus couldn’t even use its entire gymnasium for pract ice until three days before the season opener, yet the Hornets have raced to six victories in the first seven games and the team’s followers are already looking ahead to March and playoff time. Rlmmey is quick to try and dampen such premature thoughts as playoffs and state championships but he can hard ly hide his rapidly building optimism when he adds “my kids are sure maturing. They are now playing the game in an intelligent way. “That’s important. You can have mechanical ballplayers who do the right thing but you’ll still lose. When you add matu rity and that experience, well then you can start winning. “We’re not really as good as the record shows but after all the victories are there and we could easily have been un beaten right now.’’ The lone loss came at the hands of Poolesvllle and it was a close game. Poolesvllle won 65-59 but Damascus was down by only one point late in the game. Rlmmey starts three juniors and can’t brag about height or brawn. What he does have is five boys that want to play and; win. The sparkplug of the unit] is 5-9 Wayne Randolph. Dennis i Northwood-Springbrook Is Key Friday Night Game County basketball teams beat i the books this week as they re turn to action Friday night to | start that long road which ends in late February when champ ions are crowned. Friday's program is head lined by the Northwood-Spring brook clash at North wood. The Indians, unbeaten in three lea gue games, are fifth ranked In the Metropolitan area and boast a fine, balanced starting five. Sprlngbrook is likewise un beaten and will be sending that unit into the game that has played together for three years, has had experience in tourna ment fire and has made a startling entry Into the Glass AA league. Elsewhere the surprising five of Damascus goes after victory! number seven when it travels to Glenelg. Damascus will be fresh from a tournament vic tory at Liganore. The opposi tion will probably be tougher then any faced to date. Walter Johnson gets its first Mafia Hands Sentinel Loss The Sentinel has been able to overcome adversity many times in the past. Now has come the first de feat and at the hands of the Mafia. The beating came In touch football and even that was the first such loss by the team which won the regular Rockville Recreation League. The Mafia ran over The Sen tinel, 25-0, last week, and start ed the rout early when Tim Reitz ran back a Sentinel punt 75 yards for a score. This team won the Liganore Holiday tourney over Christ mas and now faces the long winter and the games with Class A teams. Rlmmey thinks that the team might take its lumps but when the tournament rolls around and the Hornets are pitted against state Class B teams the experience might rub off. Damascus automatically qualifies for the state by virtue of being Montgomery County’s only Class B school. WJ AND NORTHWOOD ENJOY DIG YEAR By ROBERT GUY Sports Editor Basketball enjoys an enviable position this time of the year. Not only is it in the news for current performances but the review of the year in news must start with last January and its , myriad of roundball tourna- , ments and titles. j Walter Johnson, after being a bridesmaid to Blair’s great championship team of 1962, took , the county Class AA basketball title and the right to represent ; the county in the state tourna ment at Maryland’s Cole Field ] House. WJ fought off Blair, B-CC and ; Northwood for the title. The , key game for the Spartans was | a 62-45 victory over Northwood on February 15 to climb on top of the league and clinch the . title. The season was filled with surprises and excitement. B-CC became the darling team of the circuit with some last minute heroics and the Barons Bryant Agnew stamped himself as the county’s best with the baskets that won several games I for B-CC in the waning minutes. For his efforts Agnew was named to the Metropolitan All- Star team. His one-man type I efforts couldn’t overcome the Walter Johnson performance, ! however, and the Spartans went to the state. WJ lost to Tow son in the first round, but the season was certainly a success. Poolesvllle, unheralded in the shadows of the county’s bigger schools, romped to a second straight state Class C title and maintained the aura of pride in the upper county community. Springbrook made it to the finals but lost to Allegany in Class A. In early March the big news was the first of a series of coaching changes at Blair. Kulakowski produced six championship teams in his last nine years and sent Steve Bar ber and Tom Brown to the major leagues. George Geinger re placed him as coach. Walter Johnson succeeded Northwood as county wrestling champion in a year when the Spartans were maturing to the point that they would be a threat in every sport. Northwood still was able to claim a tremendous grappling season. Sherwood opened the baseball season with a 1-0 victory over John Carroll while Blair was losing to Hagerstown, 9-0. The Blazers were to have it rough all season and had no home field. It was being resodded by the county for football. Peary’s Steve Borchers golf ed his way to the Washington area schoolboy title with a come-f rom-behlnd victory over Ron Rhodes at Columbia Coun try Club. Borchers had to wait for Rhodes to overcome the flu before the final match ever was played, but the Peary lad really boomed the ball. Rockville and Wheaton opened the Tri County league with bright prospects for a long and exciting summer struggle for the eventual title in their divi sion. Sherwood stayed on top of Class A in high school ball and Wheaton took the early lead in the Class AA ranks. Rich ard Montgomery also plugged along with a loss and the two teams met in a showdown and the Rockets won to stretch an unbeaten streak that had started in 1962. The baseball race took a back seat to track for a week end in May when Northwood romped to victory in its own Invitational meet. The Italians went on to greater things in late spring. Gaithersburg won the county Class A track meet and Rock ville and Wheaton played a Tri County showdown game the week of May 23. The Rockville Boys Baseball Association and its Montgomery County counter part went into a full schedule of activity. Northwood raced to the Class AA track title in the county and took the favorites role for the state meet. Garden Gate carried an un beaten record into late June in the RBBA midget division. St. Mary’s and Optimists battled for the lead in the American League of the midget division. On June 18 Judy Scarano, a senior at Sherwood High School, won the Maryland Duckpin title at Baltimore’s Southwest Fair Lanes. Ray Lawlor of Wheaton High School won the men’s divi sion. Northwood High School had its annual awards banquet at the Naval Ordinance Lab and heard Bobby Mitchell as guest speaker. The school officially received the many pounds of gold and silver trophies that were records of great teams and the greatest year in the Indians’ seven years of existance. Rockville’s Tri County team, coached by Rowland Beall, came 1 surging back in late June to take the league lead. The team rallied behind the exploits of Tommy Marshall to whip Bowie twice and take first. Wheaton Sport and Cycle won three games to continue in the lead of the MCBBA junior 1 league. The Cyclists easily swept to wins over the Wheaton Lions, Sheet Metal 102, and the Colesville Lions. Woodley Gardens won the RBBA junior championship and Garden Gate got upset as July f Mi* mr i Lk jlj p j .j J 9 WALTER JOHNSON’S COUNTY BASKETBALL CHAMPS progressed. The Gardens team | won eight-in-a-row for thetitle 1 and Garden Gate was upended for the first time by Optimists, 4-3. Titles went to St. Mary’s in three divisions of the RBBA. Rockville won the Tri County West Division title and entered the league playoffs. All of this came as September and foot ball approached. Ah, football. It enjoyed its best season. Perfect weather, a thrilling race and the usual surprises. The first eye raiser came Sept. 7 when Blair tackled powerful Eastern and rolled to a 25 - 6 win. That immediately established Blair as the team to beat in the county and Spring brook did it Immediately. The Blue Devils upset the Blazers 14 - 13. But the Rockets raced to four victories in September and knocked off Springbrook in a big game for win number four. That streak continued all year with only a scoreless tie by Walter Johnson spoiling a per fect season, the third in five years for Lester.
