EY WEST TO OBSERVE DOHERTY DAY 9 • Roosevelt Addresses Special Congress On Important Bank Issue President Asks Power For Taking Care Of Many Outstanding Prob lems ABy Associated Press) WASHINGTON, March 9.—ln a few crisp words, President 0 Rooqpvelt urged the specially convened congress today to em power him immediately to open “soundf* banks.< To reorganize other banks and to provide cur rency expansion. Arrangements sped in both senate and house to do his bidding once the former organization was completed. Throngs gathered in the gal leries to hear the presidential message read while he remained at work at the White House desk. “Our first task is to reopen all mA|i nsk kogikia tf a. , utuuruur went at once into his emergency plan. “I ask of congress im mediate enactment of legislation giving to the executive branch of the government control over banks for protection of depositors; authority forthwith to open such banks as already have been as certained to be in sound condi tion and other such banks as rapidly as possible. “Authority to reorganize and reopen such banks as may be found to require reorganization and to put them on a sound basis. I ask amendments to the federal reserve act to provide for such ad ditional currency, adequately se cured, as it may become necessary to issue to meet all demands for currency and at the same time to achieve this end without increas ing unsecured indebtedness of the government of the United States. I can not too strongly urge upon congress the clear necessity for immediate action." The president called those recommendations * “an essential preliminary to subsequent legisla tion directed against speculation with funds of depositors.'* He also revealed he soon will' request congress to enact two other measures “of immediate urgency” —proposals believed in democratic ranks at the capitol to be power to reduce government costs including veteran’s funds and to provide half billion or so for public projects to spur em ployment. It was believed bank reopen ings tomorrow will be made pos sible. ROATRYCLUB MEETS TODAY MEMBERS LISTEN TO RADIO ADDRESS BY PRESIDENT ROOSEVELT The rrgulnr noon-day luncheon of the Rotary Club today was riv en over to listening to President Roosevelt’s address to congress, which was greatly enjoyed by those present. There was a good attendance at the meeting today, but prac tically nothing was done in the way of businesM owing to the fact that there were so many desirous of hearing the chief executive ad dress the nation in the special session of congress that got under way today. Bervaldi, assistant postmaster at Key West, will be acting postmaster there pending a civil service examination to estab lish a list of eligiblcs for the reg ular appointment, Congressman Mark Wilcox announced today. Bervaldi was named to fill the vacancy caused by the death of the former postmaster, Charles S. Williams. Congressman Wilcox said he would ask the postoffice depart ment to call a civil service exam ination as soon as possible in or der that a regular appointed post master might be named. It was said that Bervaldi was named because the postoffice de partment is too busy at the pres ent time to consider regular ap pointments. All residents of Key West will be permitted to take the civil service examination for the post mastership and out of those tak en, a list of three will be certified from which the new postmaster will be picked by Congressman Wilcox. Key West has a second class postoffice and its postmaster re ceives a salary of $2,900 a year. Bervaldi will be paid on this basis during the time he serves as act ing postmaster. March 9.—The po lice case against six suspects in the Charles Boettcher, 11, kidnap ing has become “ironclad”, Police Chief Albert Clark said today. He also predicted that two of the six persons not yet in custody will be captured before the day passed. They are Verne' Sankey and Gordon Elkhorn. believed to be fleeing to C%nada. Albury I for Monroe County. €t)t liep Wts\ Citizen VARIOUS CITIES COMPLETE PLANS ON DOHERTY DAY MERCHANTS IN DIFFERENT LOCALITIES GIVE ENTHU SIASTIC SUPPORT IN MOVE MENT INAUGURATED (Special to The Citizen) MIAMI, March 9. —Twenty- three cities, representative of al most all sections of Florida, today reported the completion of their local organizations for participa tion in All Florida Doherty Day tomorrow, March 10. Merchants in all of these cities are giving their enthusiastic sup port to the program and a sub stantial nucleus for the state-wide advertising fund, so earnestly ad vocated by Col. Henry L. Doherty, seems assured. Cities reputing full participa tion in the event arc: Bartow, Bradenton, Clearwater, Daytona Beach, DeLand, Fort Lauderdale, Fort Myers, Fort Pierce, Key West, Lake Worth, New Smyrna, Ocala. Orlando, Palatka, Palm Beach, St. Petersburg, Sarasota, Sebring, Stuart, Tampa, . West Palm Beach, Winter Haven and Miami. With slate-wido participation virtually assured, committees in charge of local Doherty organiza tions in all sections predict that March 10 will mark an important milestone in the history of the re sort development of Florida. Great areas of additional park ing space were made available in Miami today. Colonel and Mrs. Doherty will be the honored guests at many gala events tomorrow and indications are that they will re ceive the acclaim of one of the city’s record throngs. Manchukuoan officials have taken over cWhtrol of villages and cities deserted by the Chinese in the face of the campaign which carried invaders as far as the Great Wall separating the pro vince from China proper. Over a stretch of 250 miles there are many deserted villages with 85 ' r- of the buildings unoc cupied and with only aged persons and children thereabouts. Sholts declared “there es ists in the United State* an emergency demanding nation* at unity—even more complete and unselfish than that neces sary in war—in support of cur president who is faced with responsibilities as grace as have ever confronted n great leader in onr history.” He asked the people to “co operate fully with the presi dent in taking suck prompt and decisive action as will guarantee economic stability and relieve unemployment thereby restoring confi dence.” KEY WEST. FLORIDA, THURSDAY, MARCH 9, 1933. tL (VIOPIDA’S NfcW ZANGARA ENTERS PLEA OF GUILTY WHEN ARRAIGNED BROUGHT INTO COURT TO DAY AT MIAMI; COURT MAY IMPOSE DEATH PENALTY OR LIFE IMPRISONMENT <11; AMorlalrd I'rnii MIAMI, March 9.—Guiseppe Zangara today pleaded guilty to charges of slaying Mayor Anton Cermak, of Chicago, when his mad attempt to assassinate President Roosevelt here February 15 failed. “I want to kill the president,” Zangara said when he took the stand. “I want to kill all kings and presidents. I tried to shoot Mr. Roosevelt before when he talk but lots of people in my road and I can’t do it. “I feel I have right to kill him. I know they give me electric chair but 1 don’t care, I’m right. “It don’t make no difference who I kill—l kill Mr. Hoover or Mussolini if I see them first. Yes I kill Mr. Roosevelt if he come in this room now.” After Zangara left the, stand the court recessed until 2 o’clock. The court may impose the death penalty or recommend life im prisonment. j Notice to the Public There will be a public meeting held in the County Courthouse tonight, at 8 o’clock, for the purpose of further discussing the con templated issue of baby bonds. White, postof ficc officials, arrived yesterday on the Havana Special accom panying a large shipment of money being sent to the Federal Reserve bank in Havana. What the amount is could not be learned. Various statements, based on articles regarding the shipment in other newspapers, placing the amount for $4,000,000 to $14,000,000. Htnrejr of Wilming ton, Delaware, is having con structed on his holdings at Key Vacas, a fishing lodge that is to be known as “Sombrero Lodge.” Mr. Harvey has been a visitor j to Florida for many years and j three years of the time was spent at Fort Lauderdale, fishing and enjoying exploration trips in that section. He came to Monroe county last . year and decided that this section 1 of the state wa<* the one in which to locate. He then started ncgotia-j tions to acquire a suitable place on the keys and several months* ago purchased 51 acres on Key! Vacas. Immediately after getting the; property he began the foundation! and cistern of the lodge and up to; this time has expended about $5,- 000, The structure, which is to he diamond shaped and modern in , every particular, will eventually cost approximately $25,000 and ! be finished in May. A part of the holdings of Mr.f Harvey consists of a lime grove,| approximately 40 acres in extent! which is in good condition at preo-j ent and will be kept so. Mr. Har-; vey, his wife, sister and baby are making their home at Key Vacas during the work of constructing the lodge. The business men of the community, at least those who believe that the depression will soon be only a memory, have responded to the call for a great sales event to be held tomorrow, to assist the Doherty complimentary movement and thus express their faith in the proposed Florida advertising program. They have entered their names on the list of those who have the interests of the state at heart and thns demonstrate iheir belief not only in Florida but in the belief that within a short time the entire country will emerge from this great economic crisis, a greater and richer people and a strengthened nation. Determination by the cities of Florida to register with Colonel Doherty their full approval of his proposal for the establishment of a fund for a survey looking toward a coordinated state-wide adver tising program, has prompted the committees in charge in all cities to exert every additional effort to overcome temporary existing dif ficulties all of whom have met with much success. Mayor’s Proclamation The people of the State of Florida have determined on celebrating Friday, March 10, as All Florida Doherty Day. It is proposed to celebrate this day in a practical man ner, in special trading condi tions, the raising of funds for advertising Florida, and in determining on a campaign of future publicity that will assist in bringing Florida be fore the country in its true and proper light. Therefore, I, as mayor of the city of Key West, call up on our people to suitably celebrate this occasion in an endeavor to assist ourselves and honor a man who has labored unceasingly for our advancement and benefit. I request that city officials co operate with our business people in making this day n success, that we may make it known to our people and to our friends our apprecia tion of tkis great occasion. W.
