CREDIT TO EISNER
Editor. The Citizen:
It was very kind of someone!
to honor the writer as being "fa-1
ther of the idea" in your article j
on the Police Athletic League in
relay’s Citizen. However,!
red it dot's not belong to me. j
I am heartily in favor of the
plan and will help in any way |
I can to make it a reality. But 1
Police Chief Louis Eisner is re- I
sponsible for the plan and should j
have proper credit. His experi- j
ence with the PALs of the Police j
Department. New York City, is of
great value to Key West, and we j
should make full use of it.
The Recreation Department
has done a good job, but because i
they did not have sufficient force
of leaders, the major part of their i
work has been done at the park.
Wc need smaller groups of clubs
scattered throughout the city, and
this is one of the strong points of j
the PAL plan.
However, this plan will never
be successful unless and until
Chief Eisner has the full support
oi parents and of the boys and
girls .themselves. Some other ef- j
lorts in their behalf have failed]
i ecai|be the boys anu.Jlrts did not,
cooperate. U ' I
Here is ,\ workable, practical
plan that is needed. Let us all
get back of it and help put it to
work at once.

"KILLING GOLDEN GOOSE"
Editor. The Citizen:
The recent zoning argument at
the last session of the City Com- ■
mission left a feeling of futility 1
ir jny mind that from now on it
looks like it is useless for anyone
else to ask for a beggar’s mite j
of justice. Our slogan should be: |
‘This, the City Topsy-Turvy" and,
zone it again.
£ly sole purpose had been to |
argue the fact that City Manager
Dave King has asked for a sug- 1
gestion as to how any item could
b* pared from the budget. 1 The 1
Key West Citizen, with editorials i
and news stories and comments ‘
from our public officials, has kept |
oUr public well informed as to
the process of government.
T now ask the city manager
rtpw we, the taxpayers, can have
tile gall to ask The Citizen to for-
Jt that the City of Key West!
f es The Citizen thousands of
lltrs for past due advertising
and how much was in the budget I
to pay The Citizen?
Has the city manager explain
ed to the taxpayer why we must
have twelve hundred dollars in
the budget for radio when the
public has not been informed as
to exactly how that fund will be
spent and why it should be spent
in the first place when we owe
other people money and the bud
get is being increased?
The local radio station is in
deed an asset to Key West and
it is to the credit of the com
munity that one of its leading
citizens had *he foresight and
courage to proj-
It is tvu„• *ijat the station
wi 11 render W ' immeasurable
ser vice 1 to Key West artd has been
Aing so, and my argument is not
Jsunst the station, but against
’■e fact money has been appro
priated for this purpose when an
<ier agency is cast aside and no
money appropriated for them. I
would argue in behalf of the ra
dio station if the conditions were
leversed.
If there is any official of the
City of Key West who feels that
he wants to run in the next elec
tion and wants to keep himself
before the public, well he should
do so at his own expense and not
the taxpayers’. Let’s be fair
about this thing and pay our just
t: bis fust before me splurge on
advertising Key West. I refer
the city manager to the rent con
trol oftice and let him ask how
those officials arc working un
ceasingly to alleviate conditions
here—and with housing almost
impossible we need twelve hun
dred dollars to advertise Key
West and bring people here to
live God knows where. If we
have any dollars, let’s pay our
past bills first.
Maybe we have a goose who
lays golden eggs for the treas
ury and we will have no more
worries.
