March of Dimes treasurer Paul Sher was at the meeting to receive the check for that fund. There is an apparently “honest thief” at large in Key West and Paul Richardson, 701 Florida Street, would like to thank him for returning sl7 which was stolen from his wife’s pocketbook in their home two weeks ago. Richardson, a Navy yard worker said that two weeks ago, his wife returned from the store and placed her purse on a table in the hail where it was visible from the front door. Shortly, a couple arrived to in spect an apartment which they had advertised for rent behind their home. When she went back into the house, she noticed that the pocket book was open and inspection re- ...Ear To The Ground By JIM COBB vested that the money was mis sing. The Richardsons' wrote the money off as “lost'’ since they had seen no one entering the house al though a neighbor reported that he had observed a “young blonde man" knock on the door at the same time Mrs. Richardson was showing the apartment. They said that he had a news paper rolled up under his arm and the Richardsons theorize that the youth was answering the ad for the apartment and had spied the pocketbook and helped him sell. Richardson did not report the matter to the police since he did not even have a complete descrip tion of the young man. Then, on Tuesday, Richardson found in his mailbox, an envelope addressed simply: 701 Florida Street, Key West, Florida. Inside he found exactly sl7—a ten, a five and two one dollar bills. Evidently conscience stricken, the man had returned the money. Or ! perhaps he had fallen on better j times and had considered the j money a “loan”. At any rate, Mr. Richardson said that he is “happy that the money was returned’’—not only can he STAR * BRAND amirican rnrirr Mi cuban lAJr r LEi TRY A POUND TODAY— ST RON# ARM BRAND CORPS Triumph , ■SS* TvP ALL #ROCIR. I hope he continues to live an honest life.” Mr. Richardson asked me to emphasize the fact that the inci dent has been “forgotten” and that the person who “borrowed” the money is in no danger of get ting into trouble. A bill presented to the Utility Board at their meeting on Tues day bore this fascinating item: Holes, not used....s2o. The bill was presented by the Richardson Company (no kin to the aforementioned) which is con structing the Big Pine Key electric line and represented four holes which were dug for electric poles and then not used because of an error in their placement. They cost the company five dollars each. Merville Rosam, City Electric System comptroller, suggested that an engineering study be insti tuted to find a way to transfer the holes to Key West where he fig ures they may be put to use.
