David Niven Tries To Be “WoIF For Next Picture HIRES ERROL FLYNN’S FORMER PRESS AGENT By JAMES BACON (For Bob Thomas) HOLLYWOOD Wi-David Niven, never known as a Hollywood wolf, is making sure he is an expert one for “The Moon Is Blue.” He’s got Errol Flynn’s former press agent working for him. Niven won’t say whether the hir ing of Flynn’s press agent is any more than pure coincidence but ad mits that it’s nice to get pointers from one who has watched the master at work. . “You know,” commented Niven, *1 haven't had a personal press agent since early in my career. I was broke then, heavily in debt .an<Lmy career was injaad need of tmol in the arih: Wrlilfea a pub licity man. He turned out to be too good. The next day a gossip col umn headlined ‘David Niven Buys 150-Foot Schooner.’ “Soon my tailor, butcher and baker were on the phone, all screaming, ‘Where’s that 20 bucks you’ve owed me for six months?’ Thus ended one of the shortest publicity campaigns in Hollywood history.” Besides hiring Flynn’s ex-publi cist, Niven prepped for his role of the wolf in the movie version of the Broadway hit by touring in the West Coast company of the play. Otto Preminger, the producer-di rector of both the play and the movie, and F. Hugh Herbert, the author, wanted Niven to tour with the play with the idea of playing the same role in the movie later on. ‘‘They apparently didn’t consid er me a natural-born wolf type,” commented Niven. THE KEY WEST CITIZEN lish-speaking and the other Ger man. As the Hollywood troupe fin ishes their scene, the* German counterparts step in and do the same scene in German. “There’s a million good reasons for this,” Niven said. “A German gross of one million dollars more than normal can be expected when German actors are used.” Preminger, formerly of Vienna, directs both versions. The German movie title is “The Virgin on the Roof,” most descrip tive of the play’s context. Much of the spicv dialogue of the play is retained in the movie script. “Preminger and Herbert are confident that it will be passed by the censors,” Niven said. “After all, it would be passed on televi sion." Nivai a|sg disclosed a lietzecTphase of his Hollywood ca reer. He started in the movies in the early 30s playing bit roles in Westerns. “You’d be surprised,” comment ed the suave Britisher, “how many producers have told me that I pos sessed what was then known as a ‘Western face,’ as long as 1 kept my mouths hut.” In 1934 he began a 15-year asso ciation with Sam Goldwyn, inter rupted only by six years combat sendee as a British commando. Niven, who was mustered out as a colonel, had the longest war rec ord of any Hollywood star. Niven said his firsi picture with Goldwyn in 1934 earned him a re view in the Detroit Free Press which he has saved to this day. It read: “David Niven is Sam Goldwyn’s newest discovery. He is tall, dark and not at all handsome.” There arc two saints Valentine who were killed in Rome on the same day and whose festivals are observed Feb. 14.
