F. B. Stutz' Trappist Cops Win In American Legion Handicap Race Tuesday Tivo Quinielas Top §2OO In Key W est Kennel Club Action With a stirring stretch drive that, carried him home in front of the pack, F. B. Stutz’ Trappist copped a win last night in the feature ac tion at the Key West Kennel Club. The race was designat ed as the American Legion Handicap. The winner, starting from the number three position, didn’t get into the lead until the three-quarter point, but when he did, no-one seem ingly had the stuff to catch him. Two-Ee, finished just *two and a half lengths off the winning pace after having held the lead early in the race and High Stakes ran third. Trappist paid a nice 31.40, 27.20 and 10.00. ,Two-Ee rethrned 14.00 and 4.20 while High Stakes paid 5.20. The Quiniela on the feature returned a whopping 14.20. The third race Quiniela last night produced a huge payoff of 279.60 When Jan Jan and Nadya’s Lady came in one-two and the fourth race Quiniela was good for 245.60 on the basis of Vicente and Fool ish Jill’s effort. Tonight’s Kennel Club action will feature the running of the Key West Consolation Derby with a crack set of dogs paired off on the basis of their performance in a pair of Derby Qualifiers held last week. Stepping By, owned by Fred Pa lermo looks as though he may be the favorite tonight with a lot of action expected from F. B. Stutz’ Avenger who has compiled the most impressive record at the track in action to date. Cliff Waller’s Renegrade will al io bear watching. Other entries include Honest King, Claro, Bee’s Trouble, Nore mac and Brindle Comer. Last month home runs were fly ing in all directions, but in the past week it’s been a different story. A week ago tonight Bobo Hollo man of the St. Louis Browns tossed a no-hitter, Sunday after noon Don Liddle of Milwaukee broke in as a starter with a two hitter. Last night Ford baffled the Cleveland Indians on one hit —a slow rolling grounder that never got as far as third base. And Buhl, another Braves’ first-year man. mastered the New York Giants on two hits. Ford won his game, 7-0, giving the Yankees a comfortable two gamv bulge over the second-place Indians. Buhl lost his shutout in the ninth, but still triumphed easi ly, 8-1. The Yankee victory was a mas terpiece by Ford, who, back in the big leagues after a two-year Army hitch, has a phenomenal record -12 major league starts and 12 ma jor league victories. The only time he has been beaten was in relief against Philadelphia in 1950. “That was my best one,” he said after last night’s game. “I’ve never pitched a ooe-hitter before. As long as the hit had to come l*m glad it came that early. I don’t know if I would have been aide to stand the tension. “Sure I knew I had a no-hitter going. ! always look at the score hoard. When Early Wynn topped that ball 1 just couldn’t get to it. I said to myself, 'Weil, there goes the no-hitter.* ** Wynn, who was opposing Feed on the mound, just got tus bat on a 3 and 2 pitch in the sixth inning and dribbled it between the mound and third base. Ford charged in along with third baseman Gd Me- Doug aid. When he uv Ford couldn’t make it, McDougaid made a stab for the ball but couldn’t find the handle. The official scorer called it a hit on the theory that Wyna would have beaten any throw Me Doug aid could have made even if he cam# up with the has Buhl, working in tem- peratures with a brisk wind, gave up a breeze-blown Texas League single to Don Mueller in the fourth inning and a short double to Bobby Thomson at the start of the ninth. He went on to load the bases on walks in the ninth and Thomson scored the lone New York run aft er an outfield fly by Daryl Spencer. The Philadelphia Phillies took over the lead in the National League by edging the St. Louis Cardinals, 6-5, after Brooklyn had lost the only daylight contest, 6-4, to the Chicago Cubs on Dee Fondy’s llth-inning home run. Pittsburgh and Cincinnati were rained out at Cincinnati after 2Vt innings with the Pirates leading, 5-1. Holloman, making his first ap pearance since tossing his no hitter. couldn’t come close to matching that success. He gave up two runs and lasted less than two innings at Philadelphia before he retired with a blistered finger on his pitching hand. Don Larsen took over for the Browns and they went on to whip the Athletics. 7-3. Washington won its fifth in a row, 10-1, over Detroit, and Chicago won an uphill battle at Boston. 9-7, in 10 innings. The victory left Chicago only nine percentage points back of second place Cleveland. Ned Garver, who had shown marked improvement for Detroit after losing his first three starts, was battered by the Senators for 12 hits and all of their 10 runs in less than six innings. The Phillies and Cardinals were locked in a 1-1 tie until the ninth inning. Then the Phils exploded for five runs and the Cards came back with four on home runs by Steve Bilko and Solly Hemus.
