ROME ÜB—The new political par
ty that promises Italians a pound
of steak a day has widened its
program to pledge: no taxes, triple
pay and a 30-hour school year.
There are other embellishments:
free money, a four-hour work day,
no jails, no more studying history,
Greek or Latin.

ence economics professor, started
his "beefsteak party” as a joke,
but now is stumping seriously for
election to the Chamber of Depu
ties, heading a list whose symbol
is a galloping baby beef.
In Rome he packed the Piazzo
del Popolo with one of the biggest—
and noisiest—crowds of the cam
paign for June 7 elections.
"Bi-stec-ca." the crowd yelled.
"Bring on the veal.’*
"Now hold your horses," ‘lie pro
fessor warned. "All this can’t be
done overnight. But I’m a profes
sor of finance. My program is
scientific.”
"Okay professor,” someone
cried. "We can wait for the pound
of beef. We'll settle for half a
pound—now.”
"Now look,” the professor
brushed on, "Russia could easily
supply the world with grain for
bread . .
"Ship it here, we’ll eat it," one
shouted.
"America,” the professor con
tinued unabashed, "could supply
tbe whole world with its beef..
"What about the money?”
"Just hold ,on,” the beefsteak
candidate responded. “What we
must do is build hotels, hotels, ho
tels. Then the whole world will
come here to enjoy life, take things
easy and eat well. And that's where
the money comes in. They'll spend
it here. Then we can buy Russian
wheat and American beef and ..
"And American wives,” some
one added happily.
"Say," said the professor
"aren’t some of these interruptions
a bit silly? Now, where were we?”
VA Budget Cuts
To Be Aired In
House This Week
WASHINGTON (fu-The possible
effect of budget cuts on veterans*
hospital and medical programs is
due for a thorough airing in the
House this week.
There have been report* that a
279 million dollar slash in funds
requested by former President
I Truman for the Veterans Admin
istration would mean closing of six
or more hospitals.
The V.A.. however, has said new
hospitals may replace old ones in
the fiscal year starting July 1, but
no hospitals will be closed as a
result of budget cuts.

has summoned V.A. officials be
fore it Wednesday tor questioning
on the reports.
The House appropriations sub
committee handling V, A. funds te
scheduled to meet Friday for final
action. Subcommitoto Chairman
Phillips (R-Caltf) declined to com

care funds may he restored.

SEOUL UP—Driving rain lashed
Korean battle lines today in the
quietest predawn in 20 days.
In sharp contrast to last week's
bloody battles, action was limited
to patrol-sized jabs.
Meanwhile, the Air Force said
it lost only one Sabre jet to Red
MIGs in May air tatties, in which
55 Communist jets were destroyed,
.but 16 others were lost to ground
fire and various causes.
Far East Air Forces headquar
ters, in its montnly air summary
said three Thunderjcts, one 826
twin-engine bomber, one mosquito
observation plane and one Marine
AU fighter-bomber were shot down
by Communist groundfire. Two
Thunder jets, one F9I Starfire night
fighter, five Sabres, one Australian
Meteor jet and cnc Marine AU
fighter were lost to “other causes,”
probably engine trouble.
The 55 Mis shot down by Amer
ican Sabres missed by eight the
record 63 destroyed in September.
