Davenport said that from Octo
ber through March, one-third of all
pedestrian deaths occur between 5
and • p. m., hours that are usually
or dark during these months.

“Unfortunately, we can’t change
the laws of nature,” Davenport
said. “Darkness is here to stay.
But we can do something as far
as human nature is concerned.
Many pedestrians meet their
deaths in night traffic because of
their own thoughtless walking ha
bits.”
He warned pedestrians that it is
difficult for motorists to see them
at night and urged them to observe
the following safe walking rules:
t. Always walk on the sidewalk.
If you must walk on the left shoul
der of the road facing traffic.
Wear light colored clothing or car
ry a flashlight or a piece of white
or reflectorized material.
2. Always assume that the driv
er can’t see you. Never cross a
street or highway unless you are
absolutely certain you have ample
time to reach the other side In
complete safety.
“Cyclists are In pretty much the
same boat as pedestrians in the
night traffic picture,” Davenport
said. “Like pedestrians, they also
are at a peat disadvantage in any
encounter with a car. So it’s just
good common sense for them to be
constantly on the defensive. Here
are some tips for safe cycling at
night: %
“l. A good headlight, and tail
light (or reflector) are musts.
“2. Add more visibility by trim
ming your bike with white strip
ping or some type of reflectorized
material.
“3. Wear light colored clothing or
something trimmed with reflector
ized material.
“4. Ride on the right side of the
road, with traffic.
”5. Obey all traffic laws”

NEW YORK (A~ln the fall of
1821, a London printer pulled
from his hand press a sheet re-;
porting news from the continent, i
“Corant or Weekly Newes’* last
ed only a few weeks, vanishing
for a reason no one took the trou
ble to record. But six issues were
tucked away in the British Mu
seum. labeled the earliest copies
extant of an English language
newspaper.
Trouble was. one issue was miss
ing—No. 5, dated Oct. $, 1621.
Back In 1812. the author of liter
ary anecdotes, one J. Nichols, de
scribed the paper. But searching
scholars In succeeding years nev
er were able to run down the copy
Nichols saw.
Today a New York rare book
dealer announced discovery of this
snUsing literary link and called It
the earliest English newspaper ex
tant (a word bibliographers love,

WASHINGTON (JMSen. Hicken
looper (R-Iowa) says that Demo
crats are off base in their claims
that the farm vota is shifting away
from the Republicans because of
lower agricultural prices.
Asa farm state legislator who
keeps in close touch with his cotk
stituents, Hickenlooper said he
found few of them blaming the
Eisenhower administration for
what' he said was a narrowing
margin of profit on agricultural
products.
“The coat of Implement* and
other things the farmer buys is
going up and he is getting less
for his own products,” Hicken
looper observed. “But I think the
farmer is taking that situation in
stride and is not blaming the Re
publicans.”
Democratic speakers have been
contending that farmers are dis
atisfied because Secretary of Agri
culture Benson has not yet come
up with e program to supplement
or replace the price support sys
tem which expires next year.
Sen. Russell (D-Ga) said recent
ly he expects that to be a para
mount issues in next year's cam
paign. He predicted the Democrats
would recapture control of the
House if there is no upturn before
the 1854 election in prices received
by farmers.
Sen. Morse (Ind-Ore) told a
group of reporter! recently he
doesn’t believe Presldnt Eisenhow
er could win the farm vote in Ore
gon if the election were being held
right now.
Morse, who quit the Republican
party last year to support Adlai
E. Stevenson,, the 1152 Demoratic
presidential nominee, said he would
ctmpaign for what be called “lib
eral’’ Democrat! in next year*a
congressional election.
The Oregon senator recently said
that, if the Senate remains evenly
divided after that contest, he will
vote for Democratic control. He
bad announced previously he would
side with the Republicans if the
Democrats made any attempt to
regain control in January.
Russell said that, if the Demo
crate accumulate a majority ef 48
votes on the control issue, he as
sumes they would “accept the re
sponsibility for organizing the Sen
ate.”
If Democratic Gov. Frank
Lausche of Ohio should appoint a
Democrat to succeed the late Sen.
Robert A. Taft (R-Ohio), the Dem
ocrats would outnumber the Re
publicans 41-47. If Morse made it
a tie, Vice President Nixon could
vote for continued Republican con
trol.
Russell and other Democrat lead
ers indicated, however, that they
would not eak Morse to side with
them and would not force the
issue unless they should attain a
clear majority.
Deaths or resignations could
bring about a change in the lineup
at any time.
Airman To Die '

man F. Gravitt 21, was sentenced
to death Friday for the slaying of
a military police officer on Oki
nawa, the Far East Air Forces an
nounced today.
! The Philadelphia airman was
| convicted of murdering Ist Lt
Bernard Geller on Okinawa last
July 23.
. Geller* patrol was called to an
Okinawa village near Naha air
base. _
Testimony at the four-day trial
brought out that Gravitt, using a
stolen carbine, had wounded an
Okinawan. He fired at Geller when
the officer ordered him to atop.
Gravitt then took e service revolv
er from the lieutenant and wound
ed an MP corporal, Wilford War
ren.

youth gave up his job and trav
eled more than 1,500 miles to help
a boyhood pal who lies paralyzed
in St Louis County Hospital .
Gail Clark, who was working at
Pocatello, Idaho, recently learned
that his friend, Jerry Hughes Jr.,
20, suffered a broken vetebra that
left him without use of his arms
and legs. Hughes was injured Aug.
9in a scuffle with a 15-year-old
boy.

Birds Die In Boston
BOSTON (O—Hundreds of small
birds migrating south from Can
ada have been killed in collisions
with Boston’s taller buildings.
The John Hancock Building, Bos
ton’s tallest, has claimed an aver
age of 30 to 40 birds a week since
they began migrating.
An Audubon Society official ex
plained the birds, mostly warblers
and thrushes, apparently don’t
judge distances well and attempt
to dodge the building’s lighted
tower by flying beneath it
