That is, of course, if she can swim. •*I certainly can recommend channel swimming for any woman who wants to lose weight,” said Florence Chadwick, who has swum more channels than you find on the average television set. Before swimming the English —it was getting so habit-forming with her she has finally given it up—Florence beefs up to a rugged 156 pounds by eating four hefty meals a day. “I usually lose about five pounds crossing the channel,” she said. This summer she wound up a great career by paddling across every European channel where swimmers race against time. She swam from England to France, across the Gibraltar Straits, the Bosporus and the Dardanelles. Previously she had set a record from Catalina Island to the Cali fornia mainland. She now is 33, the same age at which Alexander The Great found no more worlds to wfoquer. But she isn’t weeping about it She simply is retiring. “I’ve swam all the channels that have a record—and 1 hold the records,” die said. “So now is the time for me to quit inraa always a sport with me. I don’t want to go on and become a stunt artist 1 want to be remembered as an athlete.” Florence has slimmed down to 144, and has about ten pounds more to go before Shell be happy. “1 don’t drink or smoke and I’ve never tasted coffee in my life,” she said. ’’But I sure love candy. That’s my downfall. Some times I wake up with a chocolate hangover.” How can a pretty woman—and she is quite pretty and feminine beat the world's most rugged men Steer Recovered KANSAS CITY UT)—A missing prixe winning steer today was safely marking' time on a motor car wash rack. Dorothea’s Pride, the grand champion, 1,190 pound Hereford of the American Royal Livestock Show, turned up missing early yes terday from a car lot where his owner, Bed Berry, a motor car dealer, had him on exhibition. An anonymous telephone call late in the day led searchers to a pasture seven miles north of Kasnas City where they found the $8,690 steer munching on grass. Nobody knew—or would say how the steer got there. Berry isn’t taking any more chances. On Monday, Dorothea’s Pride goes to the butcher, then into Berry’s food locker. Saturday, October 31, IfSJi at the arduous game of distance swimming? “Why, it’s a known fact that women have less strength but more endurance than men,” she said, as if surprised at the ques tion. “So the longer the event, the better chance we have of breaking men’s records.” Florence started competitive swimming at 6, and failed to place in one of her first races because she dropped her gum and stopped to look for it. Her story is the saga of a girl 'who picked a dream young and stayed with it until she made it come true. “My childhood Idol was Ger trude Ederle—she still is—and I decided 1 wanted to swim the English Channel as she had.” Florence worked two years in Arabia as a comptometer operator for an oil company to save up $5,000 for the first of her three successful trips across the English Channel. Her tour this summer was sponsored by E. W. Stewart, a swim suit manufacturer. Her success has brought her a good income the last two years but no wealth. She hopes now to try one more channel and stay in it—on her own video sports pro gram. She figures she has swum an average of 18 miles a week for the last 27 years—or 25,272 miles, the distance around the earth. “I wish I had a penny for every mile I’ve swam,” she said, them looked a bit Stressed when told that would come to exactly $252.72.” She still swims a mile every day before breakfast “to keep loosened up.” “I’ve been spending too much time in the water to have any romance in my life,*’ she remark ed. “But I haven’t been lonely. If I get feeling mixed up, I jump in the water—and then I can think things through better. “You know, those wolves ashore can cause more trouble than any sharks you meet in the water.” Brown Concerned For Happiness Of Estranged Wife NEW YORK to-Sgt John H. Brown said in Korea today that his wife’s happiness will decide what action he’ll take concerning her romance with singer Julius La Rosa. Last night Brown’s wife, Dorothy McGuire, said she was “shocked and disturbed” upon learning her husband was planning to come back from Korea. La Rosa had said Miss McGuire separated amicably from Brown and that they would b! married after resolving legal and religious obstacles. La Rosa is a Roman Catholic and Miss McGuire is not. Brown, 25, a former divinity student at Anderson (Ind.) Theo logical Seminary, said he learned from a radio broadcast that his wife was divorcing him to marry La Rosa. Shortly after, he said, he received a letter from her. “I love my wife dearly, *' Brown said through Army officers at his post at Taegu, “and I am most concerned for her happiness. At this time I haven’t decided what action to take. On Pinion Nuts GALLUP, N. M. W—The Nava jos have banned gathering pinon nuts within their reservation ex cept by their people.
