ROGESR Associated l*rm Arts Editor .sew YORK (UT)-St. Nicholas •ad Knickerbocker sound as though they bad a lot io common They do, too, as we are reminded at this season when Santa Claus comes climbing down Father Knic kerbocker’s chimneys. You have only to reread, for the fun of It if nothing more, Wash ington Irving’s make-believe ‘'Knic kerbocker History of New York,’ and you will find a great deal about Santa, beginning at what is practically the beginning of the country the Battery. On the lower tip of the island of Manhattan, the Dutch settlers threw up earthworks, and within them built a chapel to St. Nich olas. In the chapel, aays Irving, putting the words in Knickerbock er's mouth, was originated the custom of hanging up the stock ings at Christmas time. Right there waa started, in effect, all the celebration going on right now in Father Knickerbocker’s art gal lery and concert hall sad up and down his brightly lighted streets and avanues. A Cornell professor, Dr. Charles W. Jones, speaking at the New York Historical Society’s Christ mas festival, said: "Without Irving there would ho no Sente Claus. Tho (Knicker bocker) History contains no loss Soviet Pushes For Effective New Fleet By BLTON C. PAY . AP Military Affairs Reporter WASHINGTON ÜB-Swift, highly maneuverable cruisers, destroyers, submarines and troop-carrying merchantmen are going into the new fleet Russia is creating for use if she gambles oo a conquest of Europe. Soma of her submarines are rated as rivals in underwater speed to the new U.S. atomic models. Authorities here estimated that in cruiser construction alone Soviet building during the last few years has exceeded the total built by the United States and its North Atlantic Treity Organisation allies. Currently, Russia is believed to have more than 30 cruisers built or building, including an ultramod ern, swift, highly maneuverable type designated as the Sverdlov class. Only one of the class has been seen by the Western world, when it appeared for Britain's corona tion ceremonies last summer. Pre sumably it and others are based at White Sea ports, like Murmansk, toward which the Sverdlov was aeen heading after it sailed from England. Cruisers like this are es pecially useful as raiders against combatant and merchant ships of other nations and in support of amphibious landing operations. The Sverdlov, listed by the Rus sians as a 12,000-ton ship, but seeming much heavier, maneu-! vered swiftly and easily as Western naval experts watched it on its Visit last summer. Equipment of the Sverdlov class compares favorably with that of] the best American and British combatant craft. Fire control radar equipment for the main armament! (apparently about six-inch weap ons) and anti-aircraft weapons were noted. Naval men still estimate the aixe of the Soviet submarine force at about 300 craft, a figure used | as far ba.ck as 1948. But since then modern craft, presumably In-; eluding the Type XXVI submer gibles designed by Germany’s sub-: marine experts, are rapidly replac ing the conglomeration of older; subs which the Soviets had or in herited by captui-e at the end of World War 11. The Type XXVI is powered by a closed cycle , engine which requires no oxygen for com bustion, permitting prolonged oper ation at great depths and high speed. Underwater speed up to 25 knots is probable, a speed which approaches that expected for the United States’ atomic - powered subs now being built. A major use for Russian sub marines would be to attack Allied supply and troop ships bringing; help to Europe if the Soviets! launched war. However, on the basis of their own progress in that field, Ameri-j can naval authorities also now reckon with the probability that Russia is building or converting' submarines for launching of guid ed missiles. The Red fleet has displayed little or no interest in aircraft carriers. But there is believed to exist a sizable naval air arm of land based aircraft Friday, Pooomhor U. 1953 | than 2S allusions' to Mm-Hero is tho description of Sonto Clout kfkimlsM mUftm W Hi ■ rktidsao Bring inf f VTTI T 9 III# CnlKlfWfV— parking Ms horse end wagon on tho roof while ho si ides down tho chimney." Other New Yorkers credited by Dr. Jones with helping to develop the Santa story are Clement C. j Moore, author of ‘A Visit from I St. Nicholas,” and the cartoonist, Thomas Nast, who pictured Santa as the Jolly fat figure we all know. Ail during the Christmas season he’s out in the streets in his bright red costume ringing the bell for the Salvation Army. He’s at store doors welcoming the chil dren, or waiting inside at the tree for them. He attends other events, at least in spirit. Liner Is Home OSLO, Norway Ufb—A throng of 7,000 persons lined Oslo’s water front last night to cheer the liner Stavangerfjord after her 2,050-mile Atlantic trip without a rudder. The big liner, whose captain steered with the vessel's twin pro pellers after she lost her rudder in a hurricane Dec. S, docked only two days lat. Many of the Stavangerfjord’s 644 passengers were Americans of Scandinavian origin from Minne sota and Wisconsin going to the old country for Christmas. The liner was three days and 1,000 miles out of New York when the accident occurred. The rest of the trip took nine days. The pople of Puerto Rico have been U.
