Key West Shades Miami Tech Cagers, 43-42 In Hectic Bailgame Here * * * it if it it it it * * * *** ★★★ ★ *★* Comstock Sets New Record In Winning March Of Dimes Handicap * * * Last Second Missed Foul Shots Give Conchs Win The Key West High School Basketball team sur vived a late drive by the Miami Tech cagers Saturday night to win 43-42. The game had more action packed into the last four seconds than all the rest of their local cage contests put together. The Conchs, after suffer ing from a lapse in the third < period found themselves j with a one point lead with four seconds to go. They at-1 tempted to freeze the ball as the time ran out, but Tech’s Dick Levitz intercep ted a pass and the Conch’s Dick Salgado got a little ov- j er eager in his defensive! play and all but tackled the Techman. The referee blew his whistle and awarded Levitz two foul shots. Things looked dark for the Conchs. But Levitz missed both shots sod Key West preserved its lead. But that wasn’t all—at the time the fouls were awarded, a Tech coach, apparently unaware that the foul had been called, rushed out on the court. “Didn’t you see that foul?” he screamed at referee Steve Atkin*. “Of course I saw it-your boy is about ready to shoot,” Atkins replied. He then awarded a techni cal foul to the Conchs for the coaches’ action in going out on the court. The bailgame ended with the Concha in possession of the ball and their third (according to the. lastest estimate) Gold Coast Con ference win o i the season. The fans, needless to say, were breath less at this point. Earlier, Key West bad taken the lead at the end of the first quarter by a 14-11 margin. The two dubs matched each other point for point throughout the second period, each dumping in eight points. Again it was accurate foul shoot ing on the part of the Conchs that was instrumental in their victory. Julio Henriquez and Stu Logun each bucketed one each to main tain a Key West lead after the locals had gone into a scoring slump and the Techmen had knot ted the count 36-36 in the final period. Then Gibby Gates and Glynn Archer dumped in field goals to provide the winning margin. Lefty Renaud, the same boy who gave the Conchs a lot of trouble on the gridiron, was the top scorer for the visitors with 19 points. * Julio Henriquez paced the locals for the third straight game with 14 points while Glynnn Archer had! 10. If you no tice a scarcity of the older model Fords and Mercurys around town you will find them out at the Boca Chka Beach Track, which is op erated jointly by the Key West Stock Car Racing Assn, and the Key West Angels, the Motoreyde Club. The Racing Assn, is headed by George Toppino President; Bob Turner, Vice President; Frank Toppino See. and Treasurer. Sunday afternoon saw a good turn out of tourists as well as Key Westers. The race cars consist just about every color and shape, some are bob-tailed, some are squatty and others just naturally look sick, but don’t let that fool you, those motors are hot and so are the drivers. There were two Miami drivers down, but they couldn’t garner a win. Probably the dirt track had them at a disadvantage, however, this half mile track de- I finitely gives the drivers a better i ichance regardless of what starting 'position he might draw. | In the first Elimination Heat, jWith seven cars going, Rip Ault, who has been carrying on quite a 'feud with Bob Turner, succeeded in showing Turner the way home.
