The Conchs, despite an in spired battle, never were threats to the supremacy of the Cavaliers who outscored them in evry period. He dumped in 1< ! points in a losing oause. Oorai Gables almost could have 1 wen the game on foul shots alone they dropped in 24 paints from the free throw drde. They out soared Key West only 38-32 from the field. The game started out as a rout wfih the Cavaliers piling up a 12-1 margin over Key West before Hen- Ihraez connected with a field goal. But Key West came forging back end wHb a tight sone defense that bottled up the Gables attack, and managed to bring the score up to 14-S at the end of the first quar ter. ■ But at the half, they were trail ing 51*23. The loss of Henriquez. who fouled out in the final period, was a blow to the Conch's chance* ef pulling closer to the winners. At the end of the third period, Coral Gables commanded a 47-31 laid. Center Bob Steiner led topic scoring with 25 counters. the victory sent them into the ••mi-finals with Fort Lauderdale end litem i Edison. The Independents took the lead in the first quarter, 12-4. and were never threatened. They increased their margin to 24-11 at halftime and 34-21 when the third period ended. Enhe Phelps and Hanson Quack led the Flyers offense with 10 poits each. Die ricks was high man for Grace Lutherans with 13. TT* win was the Flyers 12th in 13 games. Hie loss dropped the Lutherans into a tie for fourth place. Fagg’s Mercury Switch, a winner in his last race, will go to the post to night seeking to justify his Grade One rating in the fea ture of an eleven race pro gram at the Key West Ken nel Club. A favorite on the morning line. Mercury’ Switch will be opposed by such dogs as Fame-N-Fortune. who was also a winner his last time out and F. B. Stutz’ Bogota, who has run up a skein of six victories in Kennel Club action thus far. A top crowd is expected to be on hand when these speedsters take to the track in the hot box special. Other entries in the race include Fleet Wirg Kem?l’s Caiumculus, Mrs. O. Z. Ferrell's Lilac Lady, Walter Owen’s Meadow Craft, Fred Whitehead's News Carrier and Velma Merriam's Bardahl. Stutz’ Pagoda, always a strong threat over the 5-16 mile distance, came in a win ner by a single length over High Legion and Trade Secret. The win ner triumphed after a steady drive from the number eight position. He paid 13-80, 6*40 and 6.660 while High Legion returned 4.40 and 5.60. Trade Secret pjid 3.80 to show. In the fifth race last night. Fred Whitehead’s Becky’s Miss and Vik ing: Meteor teamed up to produce a hefty Quiniela payoff of 194.20. Coach Jones Is Recovering Now Key West High School Athle tic Director Winston Jones is is on the road to recovery and will be returned to Key West Saturday, it was announced to day. Jones was strickan ill last Sunday in Miami and under went emergency surgery in Jacksonville Memorial Hospital there. He is expected to be beck at his desk in about ten days. Lou Raino erf Key West was mentioned a a pos sible choice to fill this position. However, the Board of Directors will present the full details of the job and selection of Raino at the next regular meeting for final ap proval. This obviously is an indi cation of the growing popularity , that this thrilling sport is enjoying in its few weeks of operation here Enthusiasm seems to grow with each meet among both fans and participants. There will be several new cars out this Sunday afternoon. ! Paul Toppino has taken the lead in points followed closely by Bob Turner. who is only two points ahead of Rip Ault. These three will really make it a mad scramble for top place come Sunday after noon. Bud McGee and his Forest Mo tors Special will be on tap. Bud seems to get better at every meet, and is consistently in the money. Smiley Richardson, will also be pushing No. 29 to the limit to get on top. Jolting Joe Lopez, who threw a bearing while leading a field of fast cars at the last meet says he! is determined to carry the Victory ! Flag this time. John Hinde has, entered a car. It is assembled of. General Motors products, name not known yet. All the other regular drivers, have entered for Sunday, which should make quite a field of cars. There will be an added race as the management has established a three lap Trophy Dash which has proved quite papular at other tracks. The New Y4rk Giants will play 19 night games at the Polo Grounds next season. Four are with Brook lyn. three each with Milwaukee, St. Louis and Chicago. Philadel phia. Evans patched the Lutherans scoring in the second half, paced by Bobby Cooper, but their first half deficit was too much to overcome. Dierecks, tall Lutherans center,! led the attack with 18 points. He was followed by Tom Murphy’ with 13 and Kith with 12. Cooper I increased his league leading point scoring by dropping in 23 for Evans. The Outboard Club took a 12-6 lead in the first quarter and held a 19-14 lead at halftime, but the Flyers, paced by Breward Miller, shortened their lead 31-28 at the end erf the third quarter and final ly took the lead in the fourth per iod to clinch the victory. It was the fifth time this season that the Flyers have come from behind m the last period to come up with the victory’. Miller paced the Flyers attack with 17 points.
