SUE JONES, Editor Friday, March 5, 1954 Mrs. Walter H. Beckman Addresses District PTA Meeting Wednesday In a challenging speech at the District 10 meeting of the Florida Congress of Parents and Teachers, held at the First Methodist Church on Wednesday, Mrs. Walter H. Beckham urged her audience to “broaden their horizons.” She contrasted the living condi tions in the United States with those in Europe and Asia, and the wide differences in housing in the States. She told of families with sqven or more children living in one 1 room hovels, the effect of physical; environment on the child, and ask ed what kind of citizens would come from homes like these. She urged teachers to go into the hom es of their pupils telling them it would be invaluable in helping them to understand the problems of the children. Mrs. Beckham went on to say that the home maker has more time to give to broadening her horizons through community ser vice, but she also told them that American families were losing their closeness; that there was a lack of working together as a fam ily. She said that fathers and mo-j thers who “don’t have time” to lis-; ten to the confidences of their chil-' dren; who haven’t “time” to take a boy fishing, or to help daughter’s Scout Troop makes cookies are missing one of the greatest joys of parenthood. ' Mrs. Beckman said that she was •*a firm believer in the saying the family that prays together, Mays together.” She said that “blessed is the home with chil dren” but warned parents not to •xpect perfection, because, after with.” Children should be loved! for who they are, not for what they do. She said that “children need’love and security and must have it.” She closed by saying that no matter what talents a woman may have, or how successful she may be in her business or profession, her crowning glory is to be the head of a home. “Nothing com pares with the rearing of honest, respectable and decent individuals” •nd reminded her audience that the makers of homes set the stan dard and that “more men are de feated by lack of a purpose than •re ever defeated by the lack ofi • talent.” Following Mrs. Beckham’s ad-' dress, Mrs. H.
