New SBO,OOO Carlos Food Center Opens Tomorrow
Formerly Known As Calleja’s Grocery,
Carlos Food Center Will Provide K.W.
With Most Modern Service Available
Forty live year* ago, Juan Calleja established a grocery
•tore at the corner of Elizabeth and Caroline Street*. Tomor
row, he and his son Carlos will celebrate the Grand Opening
of their new, modern Food Center.
Probably no store in Key West has remained in the same
location for such a long period of time. Asa mater of fact,
there are only one or two other groceries which can compete
with Calleja in length of service to Key Westers.
Beautiful Building
The beautiful new building
which will house Carlos Food
Center is of CBS construction.
Tiled floors, gleaming white
plaster walls, neon lights, com
pletely new refrigerating equip
ment, as well as new counters,
cash registers, etc., all tend to
reflect the ambition of Carlos
lo give his customers the best
In quality and service.
This new supermarket is 60
X6O feet. It is air-conditioned
and will have a parking lot fac
ing Caroline Street for the con
venience of customers.

Canoe and Grace Calleja
will be the actual operators of
the store—assisted by their
daughter, Grace. Juan Calleja
is still active but he feels that
the arduous work involved can
best be done by younger
people.
Calleja's Grocery, which will
now be known as "Carlos Food

mous for fine foods. That policy
will continue.
The store will operate on a
service and self-service system.

fresh vegetables, and staple
groceries. Also, household uten
sils such as pots, pans, plastic
goods, etc. Everything is new
in the store. Huge vans have
been hauling in supplies all
week.
First In South Florida
Of particular interest to Key
Westers is the National Cash
Register Change Computator.
Carlos Food Center is the first
store in South Florida to have
this new machine—a machine
you might have read about re
cently in Time or Business
Week magazines.
This is the way it works. The
sales clerk rings up a custom
er's purchases in the usual
way on the cash register, which
creates the regular itemized re
ceipt familiar to everyone. But
then, instead of taking a total,
he takes a sub-total and enters
the amount of money given
him in an "Amount Tendered”
key. He then touches the
"Change" Key and takes a
total.
As this takes place, the indi
cator at the top of the register
shows the total purchased, the
amount tendered, and as a last
figure, the amount of change
due the customer. All of these
figures also print on the cus
tomer's receipt, which is now
; not merely a receipt but a com
plete record of the entire trans
action.
It's a wonderful piece of
equipment which must be seen
to appreciate!
Opening Day Party
At the Grand Opening to
morrow, Carlos will serve free
cake, ice cream, coca-cola, and
drinks. All his many custom
ers are invited to enjoy this
party. As an added attraction,
a Blissware Plastic Dish Drain
er is being given away free
with each ten dollar order.

BEAUTIFUL NEW CBS BUILDING which houses Carlos Food Center. This store, located at
Caroline and Elizabeth Streets (701 Caroline Street), is one of the oldest in Key West. Orig
inally known as Calleja's Grocery, it was established in an old frame building over forty
five years ago. Construction of the new building started last summer and in order not to
interupt service to his regular customers, Carlos Calleja has been operating out of a small
concrete structure next to his home in the center of the block.
Juan Calleja, Carlos and his wife and daughter will be on hand to greet old friends
and make new ones at the Grand Opening of the Food Center tomorrow.
The store has always catered to those who like fine foods. Its nearness to the water
front has also made it popular as a supplier of boat supplies. Shrimpers especially like the
service they get through Carlos. Their boats are only in part for a short period and they
like to have their orders for food completed as fast as possible.
A Grand Opening Party is scheduled for the entire day tomorrow, Friday. Cake, ice
cream, Coca-Cola, frankfurters, etc., will be served.
Old Sponge
House To Be
Demolished
The familiar sight of
sponges hanging from tha
porch of an old house at 703
Carolina Street will soon be a
thing of tha past. This prop
erty has been purchased by
Carlos Calleja and will be
used as a parking lot for
customers of the new Carlos
Food Centar.
While the sponge house
provided an attraction to
passing tourists, its passing
will help improve the park
ing situation that is especial
ly acute along Carolina
Street.
The Carlos Food Cantor
was built by CBS Construc
tion Company with the as
sistance of quite a few local
contractors. It is the first
new, large commercial build
ing to be erected in that sec
tion of town.
