Coral Gables Shades Conchs Friday, 41-34 Key West Shaves Cavalier Lead But Drops Tilt The Coral Gables high school basketball teajn forg ed to a second quarter lead and weathered a late rally staged by the Key West Conchs to gain a 41-34 vic tory last night before a cap acity crowd in the high school gymnasium. To say that the game was a rough and tumble con test would be something of an understatement. Close checking was the order of the evening, a piece of strat egy which resulted in a full evening of thrills and chills for the spectators. Hie contest proved one thing once he gets his boys working smoothly, Coach Win Jones may have the makings of a winning basketball squad. Apparently suf fering from opening game jitters, the cagers showed spotty shooting eyes last night and their ball hand ling was shaky. But their aggres siveness very nearly pinned a loss on the highly rated Cavaliers, who are Big Ten competitors. Burly Julio Henriquez, with 20 points, led the Conchs in. the scor ing department but the ball - hawk ing tactics of Gene favors and John Carbonell also aided the Conch, cause considerably. Johnny Smoot and Ken Henderson teamed up with 13 points each to pace the Coral Gables quintet. But, just as Key West coach Win Jones had predicted in a pre-game statement, the tilt was won from the foul line. Both teams clicked for 30 points from the field. But the Gables cagers capitalized on the close checking and dumped in 10 THE KEY WEST CITIZEN now at PODICIANA TV &.BADIO 3422 DUCK AVENUE NEVER BEFORE have yea seen TV like this ... The Cavaliers took a 7-5 advan tage in the opening quarter but they stretched their lead to a 21- 9 edge at the half. The Cavaliers exhibited a smoothly functioning plan of attack and backed it up with an effective zone defense that wouldn’t let the Conchs get under the basket. The locals had little success from the outside. The only factor that kept them in the ballgame was the ag gressiveness that enabled them to take advantage of every mistake on the part of the visitors. The Conchs managed to battle it out on even terms with the Ca valiers in the third quarter largely through the efforts of Henriquez, who began to hit the layups. But the locals really went to work in the fourth quarter and only a lack of time seemingly kept them from overtaking the Gables. The Conchs pulled to within six points of the lead with three min utes to play but a pair of costly fouls hurt them. The ballgame ended as Haney dumped in a set short from the foul circle. It wasn’t enough. The game is the only tuneup for the Conchs who start Gold Coast Conference competition Tuesday a gainst their perennial rivals in South Dade. Upwards of 50,000 fans are ex pected to see the contest, which shaps up as a duel between El Camino’s dangerous passing attack and the running tactics of the Mississippi Eagles. The California team is favored, mainly because it has a remark able passer in its T-formation quarterback Joe Contestabile. Hinds’ set of backs, however, has dealt misery to all opponents and the team rolled up 3,230 yards for the season and an average per game of 358 yards. El Camino gained 2,019 yards, and 224 per game.
