PAGE FOUR SOCIETY and WOMAN’S 'PAGE Altar Circle Hold* Unique Meeting The Altar Cirele of Second Baptist church held regular meeting at the Lucy Thurman branch Y. W. C. A. at 2:30 Mon day afternoon. Mrs. Whiteside, of American avenue, was host ess. Mrs. Wm. Osby, t&e presi dent, presided. The business session was de voted to plans for the Easter decorations of the altar. An unique program followed in the form of a Question Box on the Bible, the members being asked to name the various books and outstanding women of the Bible, also to name the historical, po etic, legal and prophetic books of the Scriptures. All showed themselves well-versed in these questions. Mrs. Beatrice Ter rell distinguished herself by naming all the 66 books of the Bible. Several invited guests were present. The luncheon served was very elaborate. The Altar Circle is one of the most active organizations of the church. They presented the Communion Jervlce used by the church, and also supplied the wine used at each communion. The circle likewise furnishes the towels used at baptisms, the pas tor’s drinking water service, col lection baskets, together with fresh flowers for the altar each Sunday, and all other alter needs.. The next meeting, April 24, will be with Mrs. Nevels, of White wood. THEUS QUARTEfT AP PEAR AT SECOND BAPTIST The Theus Quartett, composed of first tenor, B. Simmons, sec ond tenor, E. Peyton John son, Rhode Wand Ave. Avery enjoyable hour of music was pre sented by the following: Two Piano Solos by Miss Davis, of the Detroit Conservatory of Music; delightful Trios by Mesdames Mc- Broom, Edwards and Edmundson; Solos by Miss Leon Edwards; u fine paper on Music Appreciation by Mrs. A. L. Turner. Refresh ments served by the hostess. The annual meeting and election of officers was held on March 10th. with Mrs. L. E. Jodinson, Melrose Ave., all officers except secretary being re-elected. The two Febru ary meetings were held at the Y. W. C. A. with Mrs. C. Whitby and Mrs. R. J. Morton as hostesses. The first prize was won by Mr. Edgar B. Russell, while the booby was won by Dr. W. M. Howard. The hospitality of the very efficient hosted was further shown iin the preparation of a tasty menu. The meeting was opened by the presi dent, Mrs. Viola Hardinrm/n. ALer the business was dSecuseed, the social hour was spent playing bridge. I-aura Campbell had the highest score. A dainty repast was served by Mesdame* Jessica Rol lins and Ethel Scott. Members present were: Mesdames Viola Hardiman, Mamie Grimes, Edna Henderson, Lillian Givins, Helen Proctor, Ernestine Dence, Elsie Lewis, Jessica Rollins, Ethel Scott, and Laura Campbell. THE CLUB The Wilberforce Club gave a musical Tea la t Sunday after noon, at the home of the p.esi dent, Mr. Henry Talbert, Mrs. Goosb.v being hostess. A splendid program was presented, the selections including a piano num ber, Miss Ethel Scott: reading, Mrs. Roy Morton, an address, by Mr. Johnson. Other artists also appeared. A silver offering was taken. The refreshment* consist ed of dainty cookies and tea. Tea kaf readings were an attractive feature of the ftornoon. WOMEN’S. AUXILIARY The Women’s Auxiliary of the N. A. A. C. P. met Ijjt Tuesday afternoon, at the Phyllis Wheat ley Home. The president, Mrs. Haynes, of Hartford Avenue, pre sided. OBITUARIES Dr. William Johnson died Satur day morning March 25th., 1933 at the age of 60 years after a week’s illness from pneumonia. On Tues day, March 28th. funeral services were held at his late residence on Marston Ave., Father Lewis of St. Cypriart Episcopal Church officiat ing. He spoke very touchingly of the modest, retiring nature of the deceased, his business integrity and success, his Christian living in the community. Mrs. Gladys Pelham Roscoe sang sweetly two solos. A wife, Lizzie Price Johnson, a mother, Mrs. Miary Johnson, a brother, Dr. Albert Johnson, a son, Edward Johnson, a niece, PhyMis Johnson, other relatives and a host of frields among the old apd new Detroiters mourn his loss. l T p un til about 10 years ago, when his health began to fail, the deceased was in business at the corner of Rivard and Rowena Sts. as a Den tist and Druggist, in partnership with his brother Dr. Albert John son, M. Detroit’s most activk* womens clubs, met last Thursday after m/on with Mrs. Fanny Hutchinson of Pennsylvania Avenue. Thrity members were present. The meet- ing was provided over by Mrs. Delia Barrier, who for 30 years, has been the club’s president. During the business session, an nual reports from officers of Mailing committees were made, and money was apportioned for the club’s rummer work of reliev ing needy people. A literary program was pa-e --ented, including a reading by Ms. Julia Campbell; vocal solo, Mrs, Susie Gaines; singing of club song, composed by a member, Miss Meta Pelham. The Second Baptist Senior Choir rendered a special Palm Sumlay program, April 9, at !i p. m. The porgram <was arranged by Mr. George Abbeshaw. The rmrsicale and Pew Rally re cently given at St. John C. M. E. Church, at Maple and St. Aubin was greatly enjoyed by all pre sent. Madam Nellie Dobson-Plant, guest artist, accompanied by Mrs. J. Reid, beautifully rendered two groups of songs. Among her num bers ‘The Lord Is My Light,’ by Allitson; ‘Wait Till I Put On My Crown,' by Frey; ‘Villane!le‘ by Del Acqua, ‘Little St.,’ by La- Forge, ‘The Ijsat Rose of Sum mer,’ by FlotonXr. The bride, who was given in manrage by her grandfather, Mr. William Washington, of Ypsilnnti was a lovely picture m her bridal robes. Mrs. WIMI 4 Webh Markoe, of Detroit, matron of honor, wore a gown of band-blocked chiffon print, form-fitting to the waist line and extending in a wide flare to the floor. Her slippers were blue. Immediately following the break fart, Dr. and Mrs. Postles motored to Chicago, where they spent a brief honeymoon. They are now at home to their friends at 1821 Parkor Avenue. Before her marriage, Mrs. Poe tics was connected with the local Children’s Aid Society, whore she distinguished herself for her ef ficient work.
