Fla., re«ned editor and publisher of the Columbia (S. C.) Record, in an article in the cur rent issue of the Virginiia Quar-i terly. “Our politicians," said Mr. Wright, ‘will no doubt continue to oppose any liberalization of the prevailing laws and customs so far as Negroes are concerned, while preserving to the half literate whites their rights. “I will, however, commit myself to the proposition that it would be sound statesmanship, and that it would result in eliminating much discord from biraeial relations and alla.lt much sectional preju dice, for the south to tako liber alizing action before it is faced with the alternative of having to! back down before the situation that will certainly result from the Negro’s advance in property and educational qualifications. “Every act and policy of the south since reconstruction, dis franchising tho Negro in effect if not in specific terms, has kept him jimerowed out of the south’s poli tical party and confirmed him in republican bourbonism. “By the same token, the south ern whites fashioned for them selves a beautiful political strait jacket. The net result is that, to a large extent the two races are in peonage to each other." Os lynching he said: “Now that many southern women are bund ed together for a definite of fensive against this favorite out door sport of the noble 100 per cent rural Caucasian of the hinterlands, the slimy politicians will duck and lynching will be on the wane.
