Night Iepredators. On Saturday
night, the tool chert of George Huntley and a
man working with him upon Mr. Divis's house,
were fibbed of sixty dollars worth of choice
tools. A singular circumstance about this alUir
was that the young man had a connivance of
his own for a lock, in which he hud s much con
fidence that he had often offered the Ley to dif
ferent person, and gave them h are to open the
chest if they could, but r.o one had ever succee
ded. The robber opened the chest without any
kv, and without violence.
Depredations in the line of apples, com, fowls,
and clothing, continue, but have become too

tor Broderick's death, the X. Y. Tribune fays:
' California is henceforth a submissive satrapy
of the Slave Power as reliably so as Arkansas
or Florida more so than Missouri or Texas.
Her delegates at Charleston will sustain any plat
form and any candidates that the oligarchy may
prescribe ; and her four electoral votes will be
given for slave-trader Lamar, or any other Ctiiou
hating 6 re eater, in case he should secure the
Domination. A gallaut niii.ority will struggle
against such depredation, but (fur the present)
struggle in vain; and if the slaveholders iueau
ever to press the legalization of their peculiar
institution' within her ttorders, now is their time.
Hitherto, slavery in California has been upheld
only by judicial decisions, the hvt of which was
truly though jestingly said to have held the
scales of justice even by giving 'the law to the
North, and the negro to the South. Hence
forth, the South may take law, negro and alL
And this, too, shall pass away.
Accimcxt oh tiik Railroad. The passenger
train which left Toledo on Monday afternoon at
3 o'clock on the Air Line Railroad, met with an
accident at about lo o'clock, nine miles this side
of Chicago on the Like Shore, in consequence of
damages done to the track by a storm which ra
ged during the night and drove the waves with
great force against the track. The engine was
thrown from the track, and was completely
smashed up. The engineer was hurt some but
not seriously. A man who was spunging a ride
on the bumper of the baggage car was killed.
The forward end of the first passenger car was
broken in, but none of the passengers were much
hurt.
In consequence of this accident and the con
dition of M. S. & X. I. track, the train which was
due here at J:-V yesterday afternoon did not ar
rive till nine, but the track is now in running
condition ayiin. We understand that the track
of the 111. Cen., Mich. Cen., were worse damaged
than the Michigan Southern, and the trains of
the former were obliged yesterday to run on the
track of the Utter from Chicago as far as the Il
linois crossing AJri-m Watehtover.
Gross OrtRAOt. Whilo Gov. Chae was re
sponding, on Friday night last, to the call of a
company of German Republican seranadera, on
tha steps of the Burnet House in Ciuc'.nnati, a
poss outrage was committed upon the audience.
While the choir was singing, some tcrson or
persons in the building threw glass tumbles into
the crowd on the steps. Three men were seri
ously injured. One had his cheek badly cut ;
aaother received a severe wound on the top of
ttehcad. They bled profusely; their wounds
ere attended to. Subsequently a heavy porce

The deceased was a nieiuoer of the First Pres- j
byteuan Lhurch ot Hunker II ill, l!ich. In her
we have another ciample of the power of the
christian faith to sustain the soul in its struggle
with tho last enemy. She retained to the latest
moment tho full exercise of her mental vigor.
Many were the expressions of christian triumph
that fell from her lips as she parsed along through
tho valley of death. Among them, "I know
that my Redeemer liveth ;" " I die in hope of a
glorious resunection." As we beheld her thus
Calmly treading the dark valley, how fjrciblv
came home to us the language of the Psalmist,
" Yea, though I walk through the valley of the
shadow of death, I will f..ar no evil, thou art
with ino, thy rrd and thy staff, they comfort
