It is per fectly :afe, and no child will refuse to take it. A STRATAOEM.—The prinoipal proprietor ef sue of thv meet extensive at' the patent medicine manufacto ries is now in this city, and has been here for a week or two, we believe, lim the purpose of instituting prose cutions against eoute of the smaller dealers, who, It is alleged, have infringed npan the patent right owned by the former. In pursuance of hie design, this person (Mr. Ilouck, investor ef "Houck's Panacea,") antered a suit befora the Uahed Atatee authorities, who, ot course, alette have cognisance of the infringement oJ patents, and the Deputy Marshal of tins district, Mr. Thomas S'Netll, was charged with the carving of the writs consequent npon the process of law. He sailed several times at the eatahliehmeett of eae nf the prose cuted readers, and invariably received Ibr answer front oee of the tpyesiieea, en expressing a desire to see the proprietor, that he was "act in tnwn." Believing that tins was nut the eaae, and that Ihe vender, in the clss aicaf laacuagu of in# age, " smelt a rat," he sent a friend hf hie to buy some pills. PROSPECTIJB OF THE NEW YORK MIRROR. IT has been said that tlie American people are fleklc ' in 'heir attachments; that they are fold of clung, and variety, and willingly part with an old friend for no velty or a new acquaintance. As lar as it relates to us, we eau anequivocahy deny the assertion. It is now more than seventeen years siuee we, a mere boy at the time, commenced the pablicatien of the New York Mir ror; and, under all its changes and improvements, thou sands of its early friends and subscribers have adhered to it with a constancy ao less flattering to ourselves than it is complimentary to their permanent aitocli ients. We how make an ,mperiantchange, viz: a eeramence mentofoar nineteenth year, on this second day of January, 1141. In making this change, v/t me only following the example of many of our eourmpermrie*, who, after publishiag their papers for several w ere under the necessity of adopting this plan, thai uieiraub screen night not thereafter be confased about th* be ginning and ending of the publieation year. But the mere important part ef our change is, our intention of giving ait eiegaut steel plate engraving every mouth, ina ny of which we have already selected, aad have engra vers employed on several of them. la ce;isequcnce of the disappo t unent ws have met with from one of our engravers, who was to have lur nshed our January piate, we have been under the ne cessity ef sending one only as a match to what we have formerly furnished. But having, now u number ol en gravers" at work, that we may eventually have the plates engiaved and printed at least Dire? months mi ad vance, we shall soon be beyond the reach of disappoint ment, and send them to our subscribers so well dried and seasoned as to be almost released from fear of their being injured in the nails by carriage. The plates we have now iit hand are suck as have never been produ ced in any periodical in this country, and canuot he aui passed in the world; at least ao says a number of per sons to whom ws have shown tlie twelve already se lee ed: and we have not the shadow ef a doubt that our auhseriliers will say the same when they see them. — We also intend to give, monthly, a wooden repre sentation and description of the latest fashions of Eu rope. These additions will cost us, erelusive of our pre sent expenses, several thousands ef dollars per an num. This arrangement, while it will afford to ibe leaders •f the Mirror more thau an abundant equivalent tor the trifling price at which it i* published, (for the plates could not be jmrchastd at the print store* separately for $5, nor could the music be obtained tor thai amount) will, we trust, give us such an increase of subscribers as will enable us to proceed with renewed energy and unflugging industry in the prosecution ©four literary la bors, and warrant these heavy expenditures of time and money. When we began the publication of the Mirror, there was no work of a similar character in the Union, of any literary merit, which combined such a number of at tractions, as we have presented in superior engravings, music, beautiful paper, and extreme neatness of typo graphy. With a determination to render it a work wor thy of the extensive support which it has always re ceived; we wont on, year after year, employing talent of a high order, beautifying and ornamenting the work with gems of t'tc T pencil and the pen. Few can conceive the immense amount we have paid for literary and pic torial contrinutions. We have been the pioneer in al most every thing that has lifted the periodical press of this country, from its former, to its present position, until, by common consent, die New York Mirror has been considered as inferior to no literary publication of a similar character in the world. We, some years sinee, in consequence of our constantly increasing expenses, rJsed the price to five dollars, and our friends have paid it cheerfully, from a conviction that It is now, and always has been, honestly worth the money. Within the last few years a change has come over every thing, particularly the republic of letters. Periodicals have increased in vast numbers, and die adoption of a cash system, and its certain and prompt results, have in duced some lew publishers to reduce the price ofsub scripuons, and to be contented with limited profits in consideration of die facilities afforded them by prompt payment. The sulmcribers of die New York Mirror, are entitled to die full benefits <if this change, and we have lilt.to re began A NEW SERIES OF THE WORK on this second of January, 1841; but as eur motto is not"re duction of pi ice, and a giaduul decrease of eseelienee," but a desire to follow up our seventeen years experience in alt respects, and now make the Mirror the - jost ele gam periodical in the world, we shall make the expen ' sire additions before, mentioned, and continue the charge of only FIVE DOLLARS PER ANNUM, PAYA BLE, IN VLL CASES, I.N ADVANCE. In thus issuing it at a price which would appear to all unacquainted with the subject, scarcely sufficient tode fray its eminent expenses of print and paper; we do not contemplate the least diminution in die i.iterest and val ue ofthe publication, editorially considered. On tbece* trary, it will contain LITERARY ARTICLES OF IN TENSE INTEREST; and every exertion will be nude to furnish ihe most fashionable, choice, and popular MUSIC; and no pains or expense will be spared to sus tain its prese.it high literary character, and to keep it fit least in die foremost rank with the meat popular periodi eals in tliu country or Europe. We exrea expect in this respect to surpass our former eflonsjaa die Editor, by a recent arrangement, will be released fiom all the cares connected with the business and financial de partment, which has for years rested upon him, depriv ing him of inuch of the time he wished to spend in ca teringfor die public. We ask, in return, ftotn the friends of American Lit erature, their cordial and hearty support ef diis NEW AND EXPENSIVE SERIES, aad have n© doubt but we shall liberally receive it. In country towns and villages, where the population is small in number, those who wish to receive die Mir ror, would find it to their interest to obtain at least se ven subscribers, diat die paper may be rolled up, in stead of being folded, as the folding seriously injures both paper and plates; and ies than seven cannot be advantageously roiled. Where seven or more papers are sent to one direc tion, $4 is payment in full for a year. But in all such cases, we shall require th i name of each subscriber, that we may know our friends, at least in name, if we should never be more highly favored. If denied, we will write the address, in pencil on the margin of each paper so put up. SUMMARY OF CONDITIONS. The Mirror is printed andpublisned by DaniEi.
