PILOT & TRANSCRIPT. MONDAY, JANUARY 25. PKESKHTS TO THE CIUEE.v" Since the birth of the Princess Royal, a great number of trifles, have reached Buckingham Palace from various parts of the kingdom.— They consist geneially of fancifully worked articles of infant apparel. Unfortunately for the fair fabricators ol these simple but express ive tokens of loyalty, none find their way to the illustrious lady to whose acceptance they are proil'ered, unless those which are fortunate enough to be presented through some official channel. Such is the etiquette, perhaps some what too rigidly observed. All packages ad dressed to the Sovereign are opened by or in the presence of the deputy-steward of the house hold, whose duty it is to report the contents to the Lord Steward; and should that functionary consider thera worthy of being laid before her Majesty, they are presented. Gifts connected with literature, the fine arts, or science, are almost invariably accepted; but articles of per sonal attire or ornament generally become the perquisites of the Queen's principal attendants, however costly the fabric or curious the work manship may be. Any departure from this rule must, therefore, be considered as a marked compliment. Such a •ue has recently occurred. A ease, containing a present of the latter description was received at the Palace on Monday. The amiable donor, a venerable spinster residing in the neighborhood of Hnddersfield, seems, as the on dit goes,to have taken especial care that the creation of her fairy fingers should suffer no damage in transitu. I.ike the conjurors puzzle there was ease within case, one af curiously wrought wicker work; a second of Spanish mahogany, with the royal arms and the letters "P. R." in a lozenge richly emblazon ed on the lid. This was again inclosed in a strong tin ease, superscribed "For the Queen's Most Excellent Majesty, Buckingham Palace, London." These mysterious cases contained an iniant's cap and robe, worthy of a Princess. Tlicy are described te be of the most chaste and fanciful design. The cap is composed of that delicate but "almost exploded fabric called "cushion" lace in the manufacture of which dames of high degree formerly delighted to excel. On the crown piece the royal arms of England are em broidered in dead gold, the circular filler exhib iting the national insignia of the rose, thistle, and shamrock, wrought in gold and colours, within an interminable scroll of raised needle work. The robe is equally unique. The ma terial, is oftae finest cashureie, lined with ci der down the colour, royal purple; the hood, which is quilted nod padded, is lined with rose colaured satin, the loops of flock gold, with tas sels of small pearls. The robe is edged all round by a broad stripe of crimson Geneva velvet, bearing the royal arms, and the insignia of the three nations em broidered in dead and burnished gold, and re lieved with silver fretted work in points. The great merit, however, of these elegant articles of infant apparel is said to consist in the elabor ate beauty of needle-work. Her majesty, to whom the presents were exhibited immediate ly on arrival, expressed her warm admiiation of the skill, taste and patience bestowed upon them; and commanded intimation of their ae ceptance to be transmitted to the accomplished artist, who no doubt rsquires no richer reward for her '-'labor of love and loyalty."— Chronicle. PALSI TREES OF PALESTINE. The palm trco is an evargrcen which, to attain perfection, requires a hot climate, with a soil sandy, yet humid, and somewhat nitrous. 1 fence its favorite place is along the rivers which bor der the hot and sandy deserts, and beside old wells in the heart of the desert itself—a circum stance which renders the distant prospect of it a delight to the wanderer in these parched re gions, from the hope or assurance of water which it conveys. The trees found in the ctcseil mnler Such cir cumstances are supposed to have sprung up from date-slonesthrown away by travellers who usually stop rhere water is found, for refreshment and rest. Maritto says that when it is newly plant ad, the natives surround its root with ashes and salt, while they guard it carefully from all gross and turpid matters, which are in the high est degree discouraging in this tree. It is propagated chiefly from young shoots taken from the roots of full grown trees, which, if well transplanted and taken care of, will yield their fruit in the sixth or seventh year; where as those that are raised immediately from the kernel, will not bear until their sixteenth. This method of raising the palm, (plwcilix,) and wliat may be further observed, that when the old trunk dies, there is never wanting one or more of such offsprings to sucoeed it, may have given occasion to the fable of the bird of that name dying, and another rising from its ashes. ' But a more strict application of this fable arises from the alledgeu fact, that when a palm tree has decayed, the Arabs cut it dowa to the roots, and burn it on the spot; and the ashes being covered with earth, a new shoot springs up, which, in the course of a few years, becomes a strong tiee.— Knig/U'i Pictorial fiittory of Palestine. MAJOR NOAH. —Alluding to the appointment of this gentleman.to a J udgeship, the New York Express has a paragraph which we copy below. We may remark. Unit in this city we havu heard but one opinion in relation to this appointment. AM persona, whether for qr against Major N. politically, appear to rejoice at the elevation oi the veteran editor and warm heaited man: "Now as to Major Noah, our old compatriot of "the Star." Long known as the cunductor ol a Public Journal, he has left wounds behind Without a doubt, and whoever, that so long and so often held a pen, has not? But if there be a man in the world who has a heart, and a whole heart, —whose impulses have always been generoas, and whose very errors are generosity in excess, that man is Major Noah. We have often disagreed with him, we have wrangled at times—we are more likely hereafter to think against, than toith him on many affairs, {)Ut we never had occasion to esteem him the ess. We feel the compliment Gov. Seward has given him as a compliment to the Press, —and when a brother Editor of any party, receives like appointments from his friends, wc will he the last to throw cold water upon it. So grudg ingly bestowed are such favors, and yet ofUm so richly won, (Hat the Exeoutive Officer who takes care of this laborious class of men, deserves our hearty thanks. It is lamentable, indeed, that there is so little of the eafnit dt) corps in this profession, that we but cut each other down. Often in the heat of battle, fancying each other to be the monsters, because we of necessity are always in arms." SAVANNAH, Jan. IS. From Florida. —The news from Florida con tinues cheering. Appearances now decidedly justify the expectation that the enemy will ere long surrender. The task or the Commanding Generalise delicate one. We shall sjan knot* how far he will trust to the existing manifesta tions of friendly feeling 011 the part of the enemy. The presence of the Seipinoles from Arkansas in the encmic's camps, may, and probably will, be productive of happy results. Our last information is from Pilatka, dated Januaiy 14th. Our correspondent says that the news from the west continues to be gratifying. A letter had been received from Colonel Loom jj, dated at Fort Clinch, stating that thirty three Indians had come in at that post. Tiger Tail has also come in and was going to Tampa. It is thought that in all about six hundred Indians have presented themselves at various posts along the coast on the Gulf side. A party of the enemy lately attacked Fort Walker, killing two or three negroes and woun ding oue white woman. Fort Walker is between Ritanops* aad Newmans villa.— HtpublUim. GEN. HARRISON. —The correspondent of the National Intelligencer, writing from Cincinna ti under date of 17th instant, says: General HARRISON left this city last evening for North Bend. He has accepted the kind offer of Messers. S trader if Gorman to proceed to Pittsburg in their new and beautiful steamboat, the Benjamin Franklin. The General will de part from Cincinnati for Washington, on board the Franklin, on Tuesday, 86th January. Pro bably he will reach Washington about the 7th or Bth of February. Gen. HARRISON is in fine health, and has not had more vigor in the last twenty years. Mrs. HARRISON has regained her health, but will not attempt to cross the mountains with the General. Roman Catholic electors publicly denounced from the Mar.—Jhvful Intimidation." On Suaday last some respectable Koman Catholic tenants of the Hon. Somerset Max well were publicly denounced by a Priest, who declared that " they were damned, and it was out of his power to save them." This attempt to create excitement has failed to make an im pression on any but the mere mob; but it de monstrates the existence of a ferocious tyranny that must be exposed and iearlessly combated before it can be extinguished. The adjudica tion of the magistrates at Tullow, was also a subject of debate in another chapel, and they were collectively and individually abused for daring to administer the law in justice and equity,by punishing the wretches, who polluted the house of worship by committing assaults therein.— Carlow Sentinel. fSJ-The Boon's Lick (Mo.) Times, of the 9th inst. says: "Last night, about 8 o'clock, the residence of Governor Reyaolds, about half a mile from this place, was discovered on fire, which was entirely consumed, togetherwith all his books, papers, &c., winch were in the up per rooms. All the furniture on the first floor was saved. In conformity to usage, we learn that the SENATE of the United States has been sum moned by the Executive to meet in this city on the 4th of March next for the transaction of business (being, of course, of an Executive character, connected with the commencement of a new Administration, the formation of a new Cabinet, 4(c.) — Nut. Intel. Hit. HIKES ESCAPED. —The officers of the Miami, a boat which arrived this morning, state (hat the notorious Dr. Hires, in company with another prisoner, escaped from the penitentiary at Baton Rouge, last Tuesday, the 12th instant. We presume the intelligence is correct —the means of his escape are not mentioned. The Doctor was convicted of slave-stealing, and sen tenced for fourteen years.—A". O. American. M. BOUCHERIK'S EXPERIMENTS ON DYING AND PRESERVING WOOD. —A special commission of the Academy presented a long report on this gen tleman's interesting experiments for causing tim ber and living trees to imbibe pyroligncous and other ehemieal substances. We have had to mention many of the results of them on a former occasion; but we may add a few which were mentioned to the Academy, and are of some lit tle interest. It appeared that, after the wood, living or dead, had been made to absorb pyrolig nite of iron, if a tanning matter were made to be absorbed by it, there would be a kind of die pro duced in the interior, which imparted a blush or gra iy tint. If pyrolignite of iron were first ab sorbed, and then prussiate of potash, tlie wood became died of a beautiful Prussian blue. By in troducing successively into the wood acetate of lead and chromatc of potash, a yellow chromate of lead was found, and died the wood a brilliant yellow. In the same way, by first causing the pyrolignite of iron to be absorbed, and then by varying the proportions and the nature of the substances to be afterwards taken up, all sorts of tints and graduated colors might be produced. The application of the simple pyrolignite of iron had lwo n .. ioJ u r great value at Bordeaux for the casks of wine-mercliants, which had thereby been preserved sound for a great number of years. It was remarked that the faeility of producing pyrolignite of iron was no small recommendation in favor of the system; since, in any forest where charcoal is made, there is only a mixture of old iron to be made with the charcoal to produce it; and this substanoe was found, besides, to contain creosote, a powerful preventive against all rava ges of insects. M. Millet, of Aubcnton, had put in claims to priority of discovery; but the com mittee had gone carefully into this part of the question, and decided that M. Beucherie had all the merit of having been the originator.— Paris Paper. S HIPPING RECORD. PORT OF BALTIMORE, JANUARY 5, 1841.
