Our steamboat friends are remintdedd
that by sending th, ir orders to our
oflice, in due season, they can have
,ll the papers they require, stamped
with the name of the boat and officers.
Our friends in the interior, whose
mail jacilities will not admit of their
subsaribing to a Semi-Weekly paper,
are renminded that the S/hrcweport
W'eekly News is the cheapelst and
best paper published in this section.
We desire getting a large list of sub
scribers and put the price low, to suit
the dull titnes. Scud on three dul- ,
lars for'one year. Weekly amade up
from the Seamti- Weekly, and contains
editorials, choice selections, reports
of the New Orleans and Shimeveport
markets, communications from spe

telegrams. Address the editor of
this paper. tf

The severest rain and hail storm r

Communicated.]
"Saul, Saul, Why Persecutest th e
Me,"
Since the late amnesty proclama
tion of the I'residvnt declaring tile
rebellion ended, depredation on the
part of the troops in our community
seems to be on tie increase; for but
a few nights 'igo a teamster front
Cherokee county, Texas, while
camping about two and a half mliles
from tile city, in the dead of night,
while quietly resting by his wagon
on his way home after comsing to
Shreveport, selling Iris cotton and
getting such supplies for himself and
neighbors as were needed, was at
tacked by six negro soldiers, or ne
groes having the bearing and unlifrarm
as well as the arUls and equipmlents
of trlaops, and they stole from him a
check for nearly three hundred dol
lars, and such supplies a, they de
sired as well as rubbing his person
of such things as suited their villain
ous banditti, fashion and l -hire.
The troops of thi comnlnlity stroll
promiscuously through our vicinity,
if not with the arms and equipments
of the service, with their side arims,
equally serviceable and effective,.
which they shoot at will fin our
streets during the day, and make, thae
night hideous with their shots, defy
iug the limited civil power of tile
land. But yesterday llorning a col
ored soldier, I snpl-nre after anight's
revel, come out on ''rlavis street ear
ly in the morning and commenced
firing off his pistol, whmen a civil of
ficer told him that it was is violation
of the city ordinances, and tlhat he
desired him to report at liea Iquar
ters and answer for th,. t.fiince, when
he used epithets and language u1n
necessary to repeat, walked into the
adjoining pro.tises and returned
with a six-shooter, and started for
camps to bring his 1.-gion, as is the
custom when one is spken to ftr a
breach of the city laws, for a word is
all they have ever received from that
quarter and I doubt if any more from
any other.
If I am not mistaken, by the U.
S. army regulations, infantry soldiers
are prohibited from wearing side
arms; also, from leaving camp with
out passes or sleeping out of quarters
except upon special and urgent occa
sions, and then such pass is required
to be approved by the company conm
mander and the commander of tie
regiment. Our city is alive every
night with the soldiery, some going
out to see their wives and others to
visit their sweethearts. Will our
commander who has come among us
do something to stop this nuisance
and viotation of military law 1

A Portland steamer was ftund to
be going astray, on a recent trip from
Boston, owing to deviations of her
compass. The deviation it was also
found, was caused by the steel hoop
skirt of a young lady who was in the
pilot house, and on her retiring the
compass resumed its proper position.
