After showing the exact bearings of the antagonistic advocates of Republicanism (meaning liberty) and Democracy (mean ing despotism) toward each other, and what the Republican party had yet to do to se cure peace and prosperity in this State now a id forever, Capt. Packard concluded amid a storm of applause. Mr. C. Green then took the floor, and, as Thomas Kenefic always reports himself of his meaningless speeches, "hild his aujience spill bound." After Mr. Green had concluded, a reso lution was passed to the effect that the Chair appoint a committee of ten to traverse the parish and see that Republi can voters are duly apprised of their rights and interests, particularly in regard ' registration. The utmost harmony and hopefulness of feeling prevailed in the party, which broke up at ten o'clock. Examination of Gderin.— In the examina tion of Arthur Gueriu. yesterday, before Recorder Gastinel, the following testimony lor the the defense was taken : Madame Sin pi, witness for defense— Was sitting at tue stand of Rose Nicaud on the day of the occurrence. Accused wus there too. The deceased came by and bid us good morning. The accused turned around, and seeing deceased called to him in a friendly way. saying : " Here. Edward, 1 waut to ask you a question, but I want you to tell me the truth. Where did yon see me the night your club turned out with the Radicals .'" Deceased replied. " I did not see you." Accused said, " I want you to tell me the truth." Deceased reflected, and said, "I saw you at the corner of Char tres and some street which I don't recol lect." Accused asked decaesed if his mouth was moving to talk. Deceased answered no. Then Guerin said. "Why should I always be blamed for things I don t do. and you and your friends go all about town and report you want to kill me ?" De ceased said, "Well, if it's done, it's well done. You ve come to attack me when I've no arms. Guerin then said, "Go away from me. I want no further talk with you. Go and get your weapons and your friends, and I will be your man." Deceased went toward the Fruit market. Accused fol lowed a few steps, saying he wanted noth ing to do with that man $ he wanted to go home and change his clothes. He started toward the cars, but turning his eyes back and seeing me look nervous be looked up the market and saw the deceased returning with two other colored men ; another still was behind, and a police oflicer behind him. Guerin stepped back in the mid lie of the al leyway ana waited tor them. When witness saw the decayed put his hand in his pocket she run behind a post. A shot was fired; by whom witness don't know. When wit ness came out, the accused was walking toward the Fruit market. Saw officer Ma rigoy a few minutes afterward and told him if he would go around the corner he would find Guerin. Cross-examined—Witness is positive Guerin's manner was mild and polite, and that ttiat of deceased was defiant and rough. Guerin was not drunk. The way deceased put his hand in his pocket and dis manner of coming np caused witness to run away Did not know the witness, madame Rosalie. She was not there at the time, or witness would bave seen her. The manner she said they came together is an rue. E. Saw him make a sign to another colored man to follow. He did follow: so did Officer Young. Saw the deceased and the black man make a rush at Guerin. Ileared Guerin cry "stand back. ' Heard the shot, bit don't know who fired it. John Henry—Saw the deceased shove a wideawake lamp into the face of the ac cused on the night of the Radical pro cession. Edward Thomas--Heard the deceased threaten the accused two months ago. The case was continued until to-day at ten o'clock. The result of the examination before Recorder Gastinel is the release of Arthur Guerin on bail in the sum of $5000 lor ap pearance before the First District Court to answer to the chargé of manslaughter. M at M to The Paragraphs.— The residence of P. O'Rourke, No. 157 Marigny street, was robbed Wednesday night ot a quantity of clothiug, an open-faced silver watch marked "P.O'R./ 7 with gold chain, a gold riDg and gold cross, all valued at $800. Last evening Felix Hughes entered a house corner ot Poydrss and Liberty streets, and in presence of the lady of the house acted indecently. George Washington, a boarder, srdered the intruder out, but on his refusing to go George cut him on the head with an ax. Hughes was taken to the Charity Hospital, and Washington was arrested, but released on parole, to anpe&r before Recorder Becher this morning. L. Berne, who keeps a tobacco and cigar store at the corner of Dryades and Clio streets, was visited by a man representing himseli to be au Iutern&l Revenue Agent, who overhauled his stock and informed him that he had found cigar boxes improperly stamped. The visitor departed, declaring that the matter must be investigated. In the afternoon another party went to Mr. Berne'« store, representing himself to be a Revenue Agent who was willing to com promise the matter by the payment of a hundred dollars. Mr. Berne not having that amount, finally settled by the payment ot fifty dollars. The Internal Revenue .Assessor, Colonel Woolfley, when the facts w re brought to his knowledge, prompted Mr. Berne to make an affidavit against the parties, who were arrested, taken before the Commissioner, and gave bonds to ap pear on the 20th. A double tenement building in Jefferson, occupied by colored families, was destroyed by fire on Wednesday night. * Peter Peterson, driver of carriage No. 17, is charged by Henry Lott with having robbed him of a revolver and thirty-five dollars in money. Lott, on the arrival of a Jackson railroad train, got into the car riage of Peterson, who drove him to an out of the way place, robbed him, and then left him to find his way elsewhere. As William Burgeois was walking along Dorgenois street, Wednesday night, about eleven o'clook. he was assailed by two men with a blow on the head from a club. t orge Poyfer, while stowing hay fell fro i. Ten silk cloaks and other articles were found in their pos psion. The Canal street cars commenced run ning on Wednesday, between the car sta tion and the Clay statue. The road will be repaired by Sunday so that trips may be resumed the whole route. William Jourdan was arrested last ever* iug in Commercial Place for assaulting and beating H. G. Heartt. The cause of the «•Malt was that Heartt discharge ! Jourdan and warned planters against employing him to put up machinery for which Heartt claimed the patent. Neither of the parties who levied fifty dollars from the dealer in cigars and to bacco, corner of Dryades and Clio streets, on the pretence th3t he had defrauded the internal revenue department, were con nected with that department.
