A " Short WuIklCK-Uroa" Soelety.
The New York font publishes the fol
lowing communication from Arabella:
For some years we ladies have enjoyed
the privilege of walking the stieets in short
dresses—dresses so short, that is to sty,
that they no longer swept the pavements
as we walked. Nobody but a woman
knows how gi ea^ is the comfort of this,
or bow abominable a nuisance a long
trailing street dress is. The oih-r day I
went out to look at the new fash'on; and
behold! long dresses are once mote ''com
ing in," as the phiaseis. I protest; tali'
a dozen of my friends protest with me;
but the dressmakers and dress-venders are
ini-xorable. It is the fashion; it is the
la'i s' style; and it is of no use to appea',
they say. For my pa-t I do not mean to
give in to the fi.iliy 'ashion without a
struggle. I dhre Buy I shall be beaten,
and that a month or two hence you will
see me sweeping Broadway like the rest
ot my foolish sisters. But I am deter
mined to stand out for awhile at least.
Will not somebody j in me?
What is the use * f the Sorosis clubs,
if they can not put down this monstrous
and filthy abomination? What is the use
of the American Female Suffrage Associa
tion, if it can not successfully oppose this
last decree of some French woman with
large feet? Will you not kindly print tnis,
my appeal for leave to be (ban; orlib
«r:y to be comfortable; for license to walk
lreely without being lbought odd for a
"fright?" I confess that I do not like to
look o ld. Nor does my husband like to
eee me dressed differently from other wo
men. lie rails against ihe fashions; but
he would be the tir-t to complain if his
wife were to ro'use to conlorm to the
commands of the latest mode.
I propose the formation of a Short
Walkmg-Dress Society. I don't dare to
ask my husband to canvass for members,
for he would think me "odd" if I were to
speak of it. Will you not come to my
help and to the help of all the sensible
women I know^ and receive the unmes of
meuibtTs for the society I propose? And
will you not give a little corner to ibis
Complaint, and to others—if this should
attract and draw out otherr?
