The officer of the day were so thick that while they were trying to keep the peasantry bavk several of them got run into and severely injured. One Sir Knight fell from hU horse. And the brute, it u aaid, stepped on his panoply. I did net hear how the tournament came out, fur it got so late that I had to jp home and do the chorea right after the trial heat and just a the show was betntc moved aain toward Busbee. I do not cars to be a Sir Knight. I would rather tit in a hammock and keep the flies off the Queen of Love and Beauty. Ian ride a hammock longer and with more grace than I can a tall hone with hU touue out and froth onto him. Once I had a fierce horse with a flash in)? eye and bright red goonia, but he tried to go through a larbed wire fence with me, and when he got through he waa ihurt several vital organs. I pa.sed orer the fence decribing an arc. I described it at the hospital after I regained my sen.-, such as they were. North Carolina haa a bggar lady who in known a the Flower Girl of the Land of the Sky. In the springtime he sella trailing arbutiw that haa been a good while ou the truil. Later on she sells laurel and gohlnrod to people who are new hero and wint to do good or elevate the lower elates. Early in the spring the Flower Girl of the Land of the Sky ran out of worm less applet with which she had been supplying the trade in winter and went ou the road for the purpose of begging, as she found times dull at her home in Asheville owing to a temporary sag in real estate. So ahe took to the Hender sonville rol, sleeping at evening wher ever night overtook er. Returniug from California three years ago. I bought at Spokane Faila a pair of tan colored shoea made of undressed elk skin. They were very comfortable, though perhaps a little too pronounced. I wore them here last year during the tennia season, so that they were well known west f Salisbury and along the Richmond and Danville rood. Thia hummer tho Flower Girl of the Laud of the Sky (who ia no longer young, alio and the war of 1813 having been brought on together), in her tour of Buncombe county and the French Bruod, paused at our house and, appeal ing to ua for aid, showed that her feet were almost out and uho that her limba were barely healed np after being ap parently very much injured, so that when I saw them I turned away and buried my face in my handa. Now, thought I, ia a fine opportunity to do good. So I gave her my tan shoes and a pair of long bicycle Lose, and then read a book while she put them cn. KEcrrN-o niEH orr tub qceex. So(n after that she got more fore handed and traveled in the cars. Now in almost every mail I get several letters ami quite a lot of postal carda, saying that thn Flower Girl ia wearing my tan shoea and bicycle ho. but that tho writT will not s.iy anything regarding it if I will aand ou cigar, etc. Last week I got telegram from all along the line of road to Charleston signed by fnnd and saying: "Beggar lady wearing your undred tan shoes an. I bicycle bow panned here at 0:35 a. m., bound south. Do yon know of it? Shall we turn hr over to the authoriti?" It ia said that the sweetest joy in this earthly lif, akin only to the joy of a rltial reward at the clis of a pur ml noble life, is to do a kindne in se- cr-4 and have it dicovere.1 by the pub lic, but this I different. I was tellin my physician abont the Flower Girl awhile a-. and how my lu'art b!el for her when my wife told me how the Hmb" of the poor thing had been barbed ami WterM by tr-tel through the briers and woo!. Extracts From a Lecture at the Surgical Hotel, Columbus, O., by Dr. S. H. Hart man. Reported for the Pf ea. The onset of malaria is ften so very insidious that it is qu:te difficult to de lict the nature of it uot. I it has fast ened lUetf thoroughly u tyttem. Malaria often will pester a person for months without making him sick abed, tut makiug him genuinely missrable creeping rigors, coated tougue, appe tite changeable, and many indescrib able sensations of genuinely disagree able kind, dulls and hot flashes of very irregular duration and recurrence come and go without seeming cause. Tns hands and feet are usually cold and clammy, and the general tendency is to dryness aud coldness of the skin of the w hole body. Among the symptoms to which this data ot pat. eats are liable, but not al ways present, may be mentioned neu ralgic headache, nervous chilis, hys teria, sinking or taint spells, distressing palpitation of the heart, detective eye sight, total inability to read, write, or do any business; urine abundant, with out color, and loss of flesh. Melancholy feelinge, a discouraged, lisless state of nr.nd, mental depression and c nf us on of the mind, surely indicate the pres ence of malaria. This form is called niarlarial biliousness. For this "walk ite malsria," which neither puts one to bed nor allows him to work or study, I'e-ru-na should be taken as directed on the bottle. A course of I'e-ru-pa will entirely cleanse the syntem of every particle of the malarial poison. Therefore, if you have any kind of lad feeling which you attribute to malaria, by all means follow Una treatment. It at once restores the appe tite, clears the befogged senses, aud brings back the hopeful state of mind whicn malaria is sure to destroy. A thoiough use of it will convince you of its wonderful power in all such cases. I'e-ru-na can be relied on to cure these cases and restore to perfect health as speedily as the chronic nature of the difficulty will allow. Should constipa tioo exist at the same time Man-a-lin should be added. The I'e-ru na tones up the nervous system and enriches the Mood, giving strength and vitality, while Mau-a-liu restores the activity of the excretory glands, enabling the sys tem to rid itself ot accumulated poi son, bringing back to this most unfor tunate class of invalids the flush and good feeling of perfect health. Direc tions for use accompany each bottle. For a complete treaties on malaria; chills and fever and fever and ague, send for The Family Thyseian No. 1. The Grand Canon of the Colorado river, in Arizona, is now for the first time easily accessible to tourists. A regular staee line has been established from Flagstaff, Arizona, on the Atlan tic & Pacific railroad, making the trip from Flagstaff to the most imposing n.irt of the canon in less than twelve hours. The stage fare for the round trip is only $20, and meals and com fortable lodgings are provided through out the trip at a reasonable price. The view of the Graud Canon afforded at the terminus of the stage route is the moat stupendous panorama known in nature. There is also a trail at this point leading down the Canon wall, more than o,000 feet vertically, to the river telow. The descent of the trail is a grander experieuce than climbing the Alps, for in the bottom of this terrific and sublime chasm are hundreds of mountains greater than any of the Al pine range. A look describing the trip to the (irand Canon, illustrated by many full page engravings from special photo graphs, and furnishing all needful in formation, may be obtained tree upon application to John J.
