Then wo would take oar native Interpreter, Untfurula, and hare a genuine Eskimo fUhiOkf party. This was a much more satis factory arraagenu-nt than anything that I could plan, for I knew nothing gvtcut the country c the habit of the fLh. and I had never been salmon shlf, so I gladly dropped all my own plans for this new one. Each day the weather gTew warmer, ml with the inorev-ir-g- warmth came moro and larger and higher colored sal mon until about the 15th, when it seemed as thtm?h the flood gates of Xkumberless fish ponds had been opened svod the fifth turned loos by millions, "This looks as though we might have some lucJc," sJd the captain, as we watched the myriads of fish passing cur vessel. 4Oues we will have to go Ushing to-morrow, announced the cap tain. This the frcAon of the midnight sua, and with coaiiaiioua daylight we tould roake our btart tt auy time. The change of the early morning watch w&a the most convenient time, aud at four o'clock the t. tar board quarter boat was lower! away, and with four strong men at the oars our whale boat was soon gliding swiftly toward the head of the pert with the long, bteady pull of sail ors on a whaling TeieL U was several inilea up, but under the steady stroke of the oars we were soon on the river and ascended it two or three miles. Ungurula wa in charge of the expe dition, and at his word we landed at a fork iu the river and hauled the boat well up on the beach. We then walked about one hundred feet up the smaller stream to a spot where the water was quite hi!low. Such a sight as we saw there is be yond description. We had seen what seemed like millions of fish as we came up the river. But here tha water was fairly alive with them. It seemed as though the fiih would fairly push each other out of the water in thir strug gles to go up stream. Literally, the water was a struggling ma&s of salmon of all siaes. There was nothing poetia or effusive about Ucgurula. The sight was an old story to him and he was too intensely practical to have anything in mind be yond the capture of thirty good, fat, king salmon for the "cap'n. lie took off hi boots, stocking and trousers. then with the mysterious board in hand began the fishing. It was very evident we were to have a degree of fishermen's luck that would make any fisherman's heart burst with gladness. Bat the question in mind was: How is it to be done? Ungurula soon explained it. Walk ing out into the stream to a depth of about three feet he raised the board high in the air the surface with the bristling array of spike points down then, with a quick, muscular swing, slapped it on the water with all the strength his two arms could command. The Instant it struck tha water he jerked it with a downward movement in toward the shore, and as he drew it out of the water upon the sand, he brought with it four big king salmon that had been securely spiked. The mystery of the tackle was ex plained. With such a living stream of fish H was a question of only a few minutes to catch our requisite supply of thirty fish. The water was icy cold, but the guide was toughened to this manner of fishing, and after the last catch of fish was secured restored the circulation of blood in his legs by vigorous rubbing and was apparently none the worse for his bath. This was the most successful fishing trip and the most norel way of catch ing 6" that I had ever known. We might have kept up the work for hours and made no apparent diminution in the number of fish. But we hod all we could well use, so returned with our ratch to the boat, shored off and reached our ship under the glow of the midnight sun. Just as eight bells sounded. Unlike the carry run of fish these king salmon were large, ranging from eight to sixteen pounds. Their flesh was a deep salmon color and when cooked they were as tender and rich as ismh'i v butter. Tae Sear Otrla. Once upon a time there was a little girl, and Bhe had a little curl which wasn't right in the middle of her fore head. It was back of one of her ears, and one day after she had burned it nearly off about seventeen times she thought of a great scheme. That very same evening a man yes, there was a man in the case noticed that dear little curl, and immediately burst forth into a spasm of admiration for it, "A perfect ringlet he went on. "Ah, how pretty it is! The little dainty curl!1 Then, as he twined it lovingly about his finger, the pretty little curl unfas tened itself and lay calmly in his hand. It was really quite embarrassing all around. The dear child had burned off the orig inal curl, so t he pinned on one of her mammas for a substitute. It was but natural, I suppose, for that man to pick out the only curl that did not belong thf re. One can never give a reason for such things. Never, never do as that girl did, for whin a man gets so that he admires your curls you may convince yourself then and there that he is in esrnoet. It is really a pity to have pretty sctnesbrokeu np just because of a horrid little fale curl, and so it may be the wiwr plan to go right on curling and burning. Then youll know that the curls are your rery own, even if they do have a peculiar burnt odor. Chicago News-Itecord. n Xi tThat Hw TTm.
