THEY’LL IGNORE PEABODY’S ATTACK ; Local Christian Scientists Say Many of Boston Man’s Charges Have Been Disproves In bitter and scornful sentences, Frederick W. Peubouy, of Boston, at lalgned the tenets of the Christian Science church and the sincerity of Its founder, Mrs. Marjr Baker Eddy, in his address before a large audience iu Simpson M. E. church Sunday aft ernoon. This lecture was given un der the auspices of the Pastors' union j and it was a scorching summing up of the opinions formed by him in 10 years' study of the cult. Detroit Christian Scientists deny Peabody's statements, but say that they will ignore Ms charges. Graft and sacrilege are the two things which Peaiiody charges against Mrs. Eddy most prominently. In two hours and a half of talking, he de nounced rhe whote Tnedtco-rellgk***- syetem which has been built up about her works n»* a fraud based upon a desire tor money. That “Science and Health, with Key to the Scriptures,’’ is a plagiarism upon the writings of Dr. Uulmby, who treated Mrs. Eddy lot nervous'trouble#. U another alio gation. Peabody declares that Mrs. Eddy is not a woman of high educa tion. "She is Che inventoi of the greatest get-rlch-quick scheme ever conceived,’’ he asserted, going into particulars to show that $1,200,000 -had been re ceived from teaching pupils and an equal amount from the sale of her books He also said that she had re ceived treatment from physician* herself. "Unrelieved suffering of the help less is the worst feature of Christian Science." he said "A million and a half human lives are entrusted to the tender meioies of the healers annu ally. "Back in 1877, Mrs. Eddy placed her mission upon earth as being higher than Christ’s was. In later years she claimed only an equality with Christ. "God had nothing to do with her book. Read the thing and, if you are sane, you will appreciate that." Commenting on the alleged power of Mrs. Eddy to prevent death and re ferring to the sufferings and death of some of her friends and employes. Peabody said: "Why did she always refuse to cure? If she has the mas tery over death, I say that she has the heart of a fiend. Can any devout person have any respect for this crea ture who uses the name of Christ for her bogus religion. Her motives are all mercenary.” Charles K Skinner, a prominent member of the First Church of Christ, Scientist, states that no action will be taken by local Christian Scientists to rebut Peabody’s declarations. "If the Patsors' unton thinks that that is the proper way to spread Christianity, that is their affair," he said. "All the things that Peabody said were old stock, most of thefn dis proved in court long ago. "Mrs. Eddy never claimed to be on a par with Christ. All Scientists claim, though, that her hook is in spired. She is as great a student of it as anyone else. "The allegations as to Quimby were settled in court 20 years ago. It la not true as to the statements made in regard to flnaucial returns. Nobody is instructed to buy her hooks. They are given away at the church and may he seen and read at the Christian Science reading room, No. 118 Broad way. “As to the deaths, Mrs. Leonard, who is spoken of, had not been at Mrs. Eddy’s house for several months before her death.
