SENATOR SMITH ATTACKS TRADESMEN OF GERMANY Michigan Statesman Speaks on Con tribution of Chamber of Commerce to Tariff Statement. WASHINGTON, June 4 —There was another flurry over the German tariff statement in the senate today. It oc curred when the resolution of Fol lette came up calling on the state de partment to submit to tho senate all the correspondence Involved In the securing of that statement from Ger many/ Senator Smith, of Michigan, strongly assailed the contribution of iJ%e Au&tberg Chamber of Commerce to that statement. The Augsberg folks say that a weaver in that place gets only half as high wages as a weaver In the United States, but that the dif ference is about equalized by the low er (oat of living in Germany. Smith denounced the reference to the standard of living In this country as a voluntary Impertinence. The tariff, he saiq, was to be based on the difference in wages. The standard of living of woolen worker* in this coun try was their own business and the higher it wus tho more creditable to them. SOB SQUAD SHOCKED. . , ■■ " ■ ■ Nunzia De Michele Convicted of Shooting at Former Lover. It was a severe shock to Nunzia De Michele when the Jury in Judge Con- court returned, late Thursday nfternoou, with a verdict pronouncing her guilty of shooting at Matteo Pin olfo, her former lover, "with Intent to do great bodily harm, lees than mur der." • Nunzia, the roly-poly, 16-year-old Ital ian girl, almost collapsed when the verdict was announced. The trial, up to that point, had befn sort of a gar den festival for hei. The sob-squad was most active In Nunzia's behalf, and she used to read with calm and serene delight »their descriptions of her eyes and her gestures and her sauciness. Occa sionally—not more than three or four times a day—she would pose for her photograph, to embellish some new sob-squad effort. The sob-squadders assured her that she would never be convicted, and ltd Nunzia to believe that it was the cutest thing lu the world to empty a revolver at an In tended victim, and then be tried, and •photographed, and raved over. Hut that verdict was different. Nunzia will not go to Jail. Her ball of SI,OOO was continued, and a 30-day delay toward anew trial was granted. TO TRY TO DISBAR RADFORD. Circuit Judges Bring Proceedings Against Attorney. In a meeting of the circuit court Judges, Thursday afternoon, Judge Murphy was authorized to appoint an attorney to act as friend of the court in bringing disbarment proceedings against Attorney George W. Radford. This action of the Judges wraß taken after a special committee of the Bar association had reported In favor of disbarment as a result of Its Investiga tion of Radford's handling of the es tates of John K. Oxnard, Joseph B. Nicholson. Lloyd L. Ferris, and the conduct of Radford In connection with the claims of the late Col. E. E. Mycra. In which a decision against Radford was handed down by Judge Murphy. The recommendation of disbarment followed the action of the committee In expelling Radford from the Bar association. Judge Murphy appointed Charles T. Wilkins as friend of the court, Friday morning, and the case will proceed as soon ’as it can be prepared. FAVORS SPECIAL COMMITTEE. Zink Would Name Body to Discuss Charter Amendments. President Zink, of the common coun di, is In favor of having a special committee to handlo the varloua char ter amendments proposed this summer and next fall. There has been some doubt as to whether this would be the procedure, there being already a committee on charter and city legisla tion. ••I think we should have a special committee; then they can consider everything,” says Zink. TO AWAIT CHICAGO TEST. Committee Won’t Buy Voting Ms chinas Just Vet. Aid. Reinhardt will call a meeting of the special council committee on voting machines early next week to canvass the sentiment of the mem bers in regard to methods to be pur sued. Reinhardt agrees with Aid. Gllnnan that it will he best to wait for the testing of the machines by Chi cago In the coming primaries and elec tion in that city before purchasing any. Comptroller Erickson, of Superior, Wls., who Is here in attendance on the comptrollers’ convention, says that voting machines have been a great success in hla city. “Ws have primaries there and han dle 600 to 700 voters In a precinct without any trouble,” says Erickson. •TRIEND” AND CASH MISSING.
