CALIFORNIA'S SUNNY SKIES LURE MIN OE 76 Nelson B. Eddy, Former Hudson Citizen, to End Days in Golden State '■% The Hunhy whies ami tales of the wonderful fruit uml flower* of the Golden htaie. are luring from a life long' residence In the middle west, and at the age of 7(i. Nelson B. Eddy, of Toledo, formerly of Hudson, Micli., aud ut present the guest of his daugh ter, Mrs. Frank Wolfe, No. 173!* Hus seli-st. ■ Yes, 1 am probably paying my last visit to Detroit, for Sept. 17, 1 am going to California, to Escondido, Juat south of l»s Angeles, where two daughters and a number of relatives live.” Mr. Eddy told The Times. "1 came to Michigan In 1844 from my birthplace In Wayne county, New York, and although in 31 years of railroading I traveled over a good bit of the south and middle west, 1 al ways considered Michigan my home. When 1 came to this stute we travel ed by team trom the farm in Wayne county, New York state, to Buffalo and then boarded a steamer called “The Constellation,” bug, baggage, humans and unimals, and landed at Detroit. That steamer was not much like the present wonderful city of De troit 111, I assure vou. “Then we hitched up and .drove first to Adrian, then to luma and liuully to Hudson, where we settled. In lonia out stopping place was the present site of the slate prison. 1 have never been In lonia since we left it in 1845. and I have never had the pleasure of revisiting my birth place, in New York stute. During my residence in Michigan, I very well Indeed, the late Gen. Cass, Zachariah Chandler and the late Gov ernor Charles M. Croswell. who mar ried my first cousin. In 185 b, I went down to Marshall, Texas, and took charge of a paper there called the Harrison Fiag. owned by Capt. John W. Barrett, who in personal appear ance was the exact counterpart of Abrahutn Lincoln, except that his hair was not so dark. Capt. Barrett was frequently taken for Lincoln, who was. of course, a very prominent figure ut that time, just on the eve of the Civil war. "I am looking forward with pleasure to going to California. The city. Escondido. where my daughters and relatives live. Is in the southern California fruit belt They tej me the climate is ideal and the place a beautiful one. Yes. 1 am rather well on in years to go to anew country, practically, to make my home, but I think I am good for many years yet because lain blessed with perfect health. My parents lived to be near ly 92 years of age and the Eddy clan Is a long-lived one anyway. 1 have never tasted a drop of liquor of any kind ami do not use tobacco. I re member as a lad of nine, trying to smoke a cigai and was made so frightfully ill that I never wanted to see tobacco again, although I did fall from grace once again when 13, but also was made so sick that I was per mantly turned from tobacco in any form.” Mr. Eddy’s clear smooth skin, white beard and thick white hair, his clear eyes, youthful-toned voice and erect figure are a demonstration of the perfect physical condition he claims and hie looks belie the record In the family Bible of 70 birthdays. SOFT BIJRTH CREATED FOR D. S. SUTHERLAND Devid S. Sutherland, the oldest of ficial In the employ of the Michigan Central railroad, has been appointed general agent in Detroit by General Managei K. D. Bronner. The place lias been created for Mr. Sutherland, and its duties will be light enough so as not to burden hie 111-health and yearsv. The office of dlvl ' MV tandem In Detroit, which ..y* held by Mr. Sutherland for years will be abolished. Mr. Suth erland Is 6‘J years of age. and bf keeping him in the service for an other year he will he eligible for one of the largest pensions ever paid by the New York Central linea. The work of the Detroit division will be divided among the superin tendent of terminals In Detroit, who will take over ihe Toledo division, the superintendent of the Jackson division, who will take over the east ern sec lion, und the superintendent of the Mackinaw and Saginaw divi sion, who will take over the Bay City division.
