BELIEVE 2ELAYA HAS FLED TO CANADA Former Nicaraguan Dictator Sought on Warrant by State Department Agents YORK, Nov. 26. —Agents of the state department today searched all New York hotela for some trace of Jose Santos Zelaye. former presi dent of Nicaragua, and watched all outgoing trains and steamers aspect log to serve with a warrant Issued at the request of the Nicaraguan govern ment. The United States government was asked to hold Zelaya until extra dition papers could reach here so that he might be returned to Nicaragua for trial on a charge of murdering iwc Americans, Cannon and Qrare. Zelaya disappeared shortly after !t was known that a warrant had been issued. It was believed that he might have fled toward Canada or Jamaica. Some of the government agents be lieve he Is still In New York. One report today was that he had gone to Washington. Another w’aa that ha had taken a boat for Nicaragua. NO RECORD ON BOOKS OF 59 HORSES Controller Engel Says Fire De partment Accounts Seem to be Loosely Kept In btating to the members of the council committee on ways and . means, the necessity tor a complete audit of the city's books, as advocat ed by the mayor In a communication to the aldermen, City Uoairuller Engel mentioned the audit of the fire de partment books, which la now being made by the city accountant, and stated that 69 of the department's horses cannot be accounted for on the book*. “I do not make this statement to reflect on any person in the depart- I ment, but simply to show that the sys tem of book-keeping is faulty," said the controller. "Nobody believes that the horses were stolen, yet the books. I have been Informed, do not whow i what disposition has been made of I these horses.” The controller stated that It would require about $7,500 for making an audit of all the city's books and lm stalling a uniform system. MAN’S SECOND ARREST DISCOURAGES BONDSMEN Charles Johnson, Indicted by the federal grand jury on two separate charges of illegally coloring oleomar garine. was surrendered by one of his bondsmen, Albert C. Morose, in the dletrict court, Tuesday morning. When Johnson was first arrested with Kva Schuholtz, Walter Saels and Harry McLaughlan, Moross went on his bond for SI,OOO. letter Johnson was » rrested on a second charge with Eva Schuholtz and Arthur Saels. He was ri leased a second time. Morose told the court he thought the second bond, which was signed by another of Johnson's friends, released him from the first bond. He discovered the fact that he was still held re sponsible for Johnson’s appearance in court when he attempted to negotiate a real estate deal. EARLE NOT ON STEAMER. JUDGE CONSIDERS RETRIAL OK CON A Attorney Louis Colombo made his formal plea before Judge Monday, tor a new trial for Francesco Cona, convicted of homicide. Assistant Prosecutor Kilpatrick, how’- ever, had also taken statements from the witnesses, in which they declared that they could not say whether Cona was the man or not. Mayor Brand Whitlock, who is out of the city at present, has advocated three-cent fare for years, and Is ex pected to sign the measure. Miss Elizabeth Elfetrom, store de tective, says that the two girls had two plumes, a vanity box, a hat, a waist, a skirt, •two fans, and two bunches of artificial flowers, con cealed about them, when arrested. They pleaded for a chance to try and make restitution, and the case was adjourned until Saturday. NEGRO GIVEN 60 DAYS FOR ATTACKING GIRL Frank Smith, a big Negro, giving hla address as No. 103 Larned-sL east, was sent to the workhouse by Justice Bteln, Tuesday morning, to serve 60 days, for attacking Miss Emma Mark, 19 years old, almost in the shadow of police headquarters, Monday night. Miss Mark was on her way to the City Rescue mission, with which she is connected, when the Negro grabbed her, and ordered her to accompany him. She screamed, and Patrolman George Graham rushed to her assist ance and arrested Smith.
