I found this In my mail this morn ing In a beautiful box of carved oUYewood beside an exquisite branch of Salvia cut from deepest red coral. The envelope was postmarked Italy, and Inside was this allegory—What the Gardener Told Me. “One day the summer sun passed through the garden gate and was gone. “It was always hard to have peo ple we love go away, but It is dread ful to have someone say doleful things about our friend’s departure. “This la what happened to the garden flowers on that fateful day. As soon as the summer sun had passed out of sight fear climbed over the garden wall aad shouted. ‘Pray as hard as you can for the frost Is coming.’ “‘He will throw his white coat about you soon and tha gardener will say that you are dead.’ “And all the plants but one grew sick and trembled. "Away over la one corner beauti ful Salvia lifted herself straight to ward heaven. She paid no attention to fear, bat grew, ts possible, more beautiful and sang many little tra la-las, and one of the lines of the songs the sang was *my whole life is n song of thanksgiving, why should I pray because I Tear?* “The other poor little plants be gan preparing for the frost. They shriveled and'drew pale. “Fear hold sway in the whole gar den. “The only thing that defied It was the flaming Salvia. “The plants waited and waited but Frost did not come, and when one morning the garden awakened to the glorious copper sunlight of Indian Summer, Fear climbed over the wall and hid on the other side. “You see the summer sun had come back for another good-by klas and found the only thing in the garden, which he bad left so lovely, that pleased him was Sal via and he kissed her Into more Mr and Mrs Edward C. They hated her and called her a hussy and a lot of other names that had better be forgot ten. It was bad enough to have Fear in their hearts but to have jealousy and hatred added was terrible. "The poor unhappy things suf fered fearfully but Salvia went to sleep that night thinking of the sun’s kisses and with so much bliss In her heart and so much charity for all the world that the ugly thoughts of the other plants did not disturb her In the heart. "That night Frost came down from the north and covered the garden with his white coat. All the other plants died with hatred in their hearts but Salvia’s last breath was only love. “It did not hurt Salvia any more to die that it did the other flowers, and think of all the joy she had of ltvtag life to Its fullest each of the long Indian summer days." The gardener said there were a lot of morals to this story. One had something to do with “living glor iously to the end” but I have for gotten part of it: one was “Cow ards die many times before their death—the valiant taste death but once" • 0 • The gardener kept still such a long time after he had repeated these morals to me that I asked him of what he was thinking. "Os a lady, that used to walk in this garden," he answered. "Al ways in my thoughts I call her Salvia but I have heard her hus band call her Margie." Little book, little book, that is the most beautiful compliment l ever received because it describes not what I am but all that I would be. SOCIETY t mberto Coletti. of New Ycrk.
