SPADE. It han been said that a roan cast ashore on an island with a rake, hoe and spade could feed himself fairly well. The kitchen gardener needs all of theae and few more. It la a waste of time, apace and money to buy a lot of tools. You will need a fork spade. Get a good one, as you should do when buying any garden tool, for they will laat many seasons if properly cared for. With a fairly sharp fork spade you can turn over the ground comparatively easy—but be sure you dig deeply. A mistake many garden beginners make is in turn ing over only two or three inches of the top soil. Dig the spade in as far as it will go, carefully get ting some of the manure or other fertilizer burled under each space fill. You will need a hoe to break up dods you-haven’t broken with the spade, and later to cultivate your plants. The rßke further reduces the size of the clods.
