fWBDNKSDAY, MAY 3, 1911. AUTO MEN FACE [ BIG PROBLEMS I. Walter Drake, President of Hupp Corporation, Bo views Industry Manufacturing conditions In the United State* In evenr Une •( In dustry have been radically changed because of the many new condltloni Injected into the situation by the world war. Probably no one indue* try hae been ao widely affected as the motor car bustneae. Automobile ownore and the public generally bare little or no conception of the difficulties which hare confronted the automobile manufacturere dur ing the past year, it hae been only through the reeourcefulneae of the leading men in the industry that oars oould be produced fast enough to come anywhere near supplying the demand, and even now everyons of the more prominent concerns is far behind in its orders. The unique situation in the motor car industry has been explained by J. Walter Drake, president of the Hupp Motor Car corporation, as fol lows: "Over a year ago, when the lead ing manufacturers realised that there would be an unprecedented demand for automobiles, plans were made to substantially increase pro duction to meet this condition. The situation at the Hupmoblle plant is typical of that which took place In many of the other large plants. "In spite of our foresight, how aver, two conditions arose which could not have been anticipated, namely—a greater demand for cars than even the most optimistic had forecast and a physical inability on the part of the material and part concerns to comply with the tremen dous demands upon their capacity. “No manufacturer could meet the conditions that arose. Contracts for materials meant that the capacity of the shops would be pro-rated among the contracts. Increases In raw ma terial coat were followed by In creases of contract prices. Mate rial people are simply In a position of taking cam of their customers on the nearest approach to a pro-rating of their capacity upon their con tracts. All the large automobile companies have their orders in. It is simply a rase of getting them filled. “The acquisition of the Jackson plant has been a great advantage for our company. There we produce all of our axles and many of the parts for the Hupmoblle which we could not otherwise obtain through th% usual sources.’’ IRELAND AND MATTHEWS WILL BUILD NEW PLANT David M Ireland, president of the Ireland A Matthews Manufacturing Cos., announcer that the company WIH ••wet anew factory building on S Site lying between Heard and Oreen-avcs a.u! the Michigan Cen trgi railroad that will give approx! mutely f>o per cent more production capacity. Erection of the buildings Will be -farted at once It is the intention of tin company's official.* to abandon the present buildings on Iroa-st.. where they have been lo rated for many years. One of the structures will be four stories high, and there will be sev eral others. Including a power house. The tree* the company has acquired coiaprlser seven acres. I Produce j DETROIT, Mich., May S— Commli •lon own hmi nothing new In the way of (lth<T prli’M or condltloni to report for the mid-week trade.
