ANNA A. CARROLL, Philadelphia, Pa. There are many who claim that man can only qualify along the lines of his ratural development or tal ents. If thla be true. It Ir. a great losa of time and energy for him to study methods that he is mentally unable to execute. If this claim bo ackuow lodged a fallacy, and man can develop power to apply these splendid rules to his business, should he not be given some scien tific rules to train his power or mental faculties to apply them? The rise and fall, the iuccess and defeat of the individual depend not on the forces around him, but on the degree of preparedness of the man As the ‘horoughly equipped ocean liner can ride the waves of the sea. and successfully make her port, while the frnil bark gees down in the surges, so men have success ful or unsuccessful careers accord ing to their equipment. It is not their store of information or know ledge, theories nr foregone conclu sions that can act as ballast for them, any more than the number of passengers on board the great ship can propitiate the elements that war against her. The contention today with many people Is that men use all the men tal power that has been given them, and that all we can do is to work the new faculties that our defective education has developed in us. r rhis Is not true. Almost every child Is born Into the world with the capacity for splendid moral and mental develop ment We cannot with nuthtmatl cal percislon measure the pospiblli tie* of the marvelous faculties thut have been given to man. For this reason there are men for whom edu cation and 1 now lodge have rot made a succors, because their education never contained any significant ele ment of sense training. You may go anywhere In Detroit —and you see the builder at work. In every section some sort of con- Htructlve work Is going on. Apart ment houses, six, eight, ten and twelve stories high are shooting up to take care of the Increasing population which Is expected to reach one million before 1920. Pres ent Indications at least speak en couragingly of such a growth. The eyes of every commercial cen ter In the United States are turned on I>etroit today. It Is the wonder city of the country. It is making everything that is In demand even to munitions. Its industries are ex panding and Its new enterprises are pushing out Into the suburbs. On the basis of its population it Is stated that Detroit is moving at a swifter pace than any city its size MOVES INTO LARGERSTORE Machinery Sales and Electric Cos. Expands Rapidly; Gar ries Complete Electrical Line The business of the Machinery Salts & Electric Cos., established In IDU by Ray C. Silver, has increased to such an extent that larger loca tions have been moved into on two occasions, and now the concern Is housed In ample and well-appointed qunrtors at No. 5 and 7 Kort-st. east, opposite the couuty building, and enable? tbe company to gradually enlarge its equipment. The organ ization is now going like clockwork and activities are in full swing .. Also The business man la widening hla range through departments, or a greater business composed of sev eral departments under one control. The wider scope hai Its advantages In business, such as the automobile factory that manufacturers its metal pnrts In a foundry of its own and does its own electro-plating It Is now possible for a buyer to save time and details by concen trating his purchases for such sup plies with one manufacturer. For Instance, Frederic EL Stevens oper ates a large factory on Isabella st., for the production of foundry fac ing and supplies, and at No. f>B Ijirned-st. another factory makes buffing compositions such as Tripoli, rouge and Vienna lime compounds. The last named department In cludes a large stoek of commercial chemicals, carbonate of copper, cyanide of potassium and nickel salts, together with buffing wheels and other wheels of wire, steel and brass. It has electric generators and equipment for a complete fottn dry and electro plating plant. A visit to the factories Is convincing of the fact that they carry every thing for foundry and electroplat ing. Mr. Stevens says that when s man wants service, comfort, aid and co-operation, for the expansion of buildings or the construction of a home, he can supply him with the latest designs and colors In pressed brick and mortar colors. In his new display mom, No. 1656 Penobscot bldg, may be seen wall panels of all designs and colors of Stevens vitrified brick. In the factory dis tricts additions are being made with Much rapidity that they are hardly noticed. The to-rent sign has been down for months and with homes at a premium as they have been for nearly two years, It Is likely to re main down for an unusual period. There are, of course, a few stores for rent, but the percentage Is re markably low. Reports ut the Doard of Com merce indicate that newcomers are thronging the city in the same numbers us they have been for more thuu a year. Hank statements show- that an average of $50,000 its being placed In the savings deposits by Detroit labor every day, an unprecedented increase. 0. T. AND I. TO IMPROVE ROAD Expects to Repair Track With 100,000 Tons of New Steel Just Ordered An order for more than 400,000 tons of new steel has been placed by the Detroit, Toledo A Ironton railroad, to be laid this year. The price for the rails was a stiff ad vance over that of the last new pteel, due to so much steel being used for munitions of war. The new rails are 75 pounds and will be placed at various points along the road where most needed to strengthen the track for the mammoth new engines recently placed In service, and for the heavy trains that are daily passing over the road. Industrial conditions were never better along the Detroit, Toledo A Ironton. BRASS OUTPUT IS INCREASING Detroit Concerns, Although Doing Better Than Outside C ompetitors, Short Supplies Detroit Is one of the biggest brass manufacturing centers In the Unit ed States today. Many tons of cop per arrive here by boat and train ev»-ry day to bo turned Into the alloy which has become such a great necessity In trades and mauy other fields. Supply companies handling brass specialties made elsewhere are not In a position to make any promises because shipments are so uncertain. But the Detroit companies have met the situation better than out side competitors, although under difficulty. The immense amount of brass being used in the manu facture of munitions Is responsible.
