LITTLE STORIES FOR BEDTIME By THORXTOX W. BVRGEKB. Peter Rabbit Saves Bobby Coon. (Copyright. Hit. by T. W. Burgess • There an* heroes who ere heroes Fl ret In thought amt then In (act. Others are made into hero#*. Quite by acrldent In text. Heal heroes are those who do bttve deeds knowing ail the time >u»t what they are about, what risks they art* taking, what will happen If they fall, and yet doing the brave deeds Just the same. The other kind of heroes are not real, true heroes at all, but are treated as If they were and are made Just a» much of as If they were. They are the onee who do what aeetn to be brave deeds, but which In truth haven't been planned at all, but have been done unintentionally. People who In trying to save their own lives happen to save the Uvea of others always are called heroes and are looked up to and made much of when In truth they are nog heroes at all. Peter Rabbit Is this kind of a hero He saved Bobby Toon's life. At least Bobby Coon Is kind enough to aay he did Anyway be made It possible for Bobby to escape from angry Buster Bear So Peter Is called a hero and has been made much of. FTverybody says that he was very, very brave. But right down In bis own heart Peter knows that he doesn't deserve any of the nice things said about him. Troe, he did save Bobbv Coon, but he didn't do tt purpoeely. No, sir, he dldnt do It purposely Perhaps he might have If he had thought of It. but he didn't think of It. What he did wasn't the result of thinking and planning at all, but of not thinking, of carelessness and heed leesness If you please But It made a hero of Peter In the eyes of his friends and neighbors Just the same You see it was this way: When Buster Bear tore open the ♦all old stump In which Bobby Corn * .»s sleeping Peter had been wateh g from behind a big tree. He had < **n Buater Pear lose his temper. Ife had seen Bobby Coon climb the big tree wph B ister after him, growling fiercely. He had seen Bobby Jump over Into the Blender, young tree growing near, and Bus ter Bear promptly drop down and rush over to the foot of that young t:ee before Bobby could ge* down onl of 1L It was aJI terribly nxelt- Irg Peter's heart was all with Bobbv Coon Peter's heart always lr with the one who Is being hunt ed, no matter who It Is. even when It Is Reddy For with Bowser the Hound at hls heels When Buster Bear heran tn shale* that slender young tree, frying to shake Bobby Coon out of it, Peter forgot everything but hla destre to see what would happen From where he was behind that big tree he ronldn't clearly eee Bobby Coon lr she top of the alepder young tree 80. quite forgetting that he night be in dancer himself, Peter hopped out from behind that l>!g tree to try to find a place where he could see better In hla curiosity and excitement he heedleaaly for got to watch hla stepe. and trod on a dry ltk*‘k that broke with a Pttle snap Now, no ope tn all the Green F<rr est has keener ears »han Buater Pear. In sptte of the fact that hls attention was ail on Bobby Coon, he heard that little snap and whirled like a flash to see what had made tt. There aat round eyed Peter Rabbit staling with all hla might. Without pausing an Instant Buster Sprang for Peter Ha wonld make very good eating, ai Buater well knew, and a rabbit on the ground was better than a coon he couldn't shake out of a tree. Peter dodged Just In time, and with a squeal of fear away he went. fI«M Kiisfes Telephone Directory! The day of the wedding came. It wu a lovely wluter’s day, and If "Happy la the bride the tun shine# on” means anything, H<>l land Lanatng should have been gloriously hgppy. It was a quiet wedding. Neither Tod nor Holland had any immedi ate relative* Myrtle gave a small recaption afterward. Then the new ly married pair took the night train for Ban Francisco, after which they were to go direct to South America Tod looked radiantly happy, and I thought acted a bit silly Myrtle laughed when I said eo and replied "I hadn't noticed It Margaret! I guess you are a bit pnwved that he has forsworn hls fealty to you.” "Nonsense'” I retorted, yet, I be Here I was a trifle annoyed at hls desertion. The day before the wedding Rob ert had turned over an account Ins of Holland's estate, necessitating a long conference with both she and Tod. Robert said nothing, but I mustruated he had felt a little proud of hls stewardship, and a bit regret fnl that 1t was over *7 don’t see how you can think of buying that lot right after !oa tng her business," I said to him.
