NEW HOSPITAL THROWN OPEN Old Court Building, Transform ed, Now House* 75 Scarlet Fever Patients The "Hotel Scarlet" threw open It* doors Thursday morning for the reception of patrons, and before the first ds> was old It was almost filled to capacity. This "hotel" ta the detention boa nltal for convalescing scarlet fever patients in the old municipal court building, which has been transformed into a* neat and attractive a little hospital as one would care to go to. Th< patients were removed from the Herman Kiefer hospital to make more room there for patients whose are more serious. Os the 75 patients removed to th* new all are men more than 17 years old, wtjpo have passed the er ous stage of the fever, but who must be kept under strict quaran tine until they have served out the allotted 2k days. Both of the .police court rooms have been turned Into hospital wards, and In each have been in stalled 40 »>ed*. If necessary many more bed* ran be placed in these ward*, hut Dr J. W Inches, health officer, thinks the epidemic la now so well in hand that this will not be necessary. What was formerly the "bull pen” haa been turned Into a dining room capable of seating the whole popu lation of the hospital, while off it Ib a perfectly equipped kitchen. The fever convalescents have good appe tite* and the expert cook* are going to try to make their enforced stay a* pleasant a* possible. Everything from canned tripe to pumpernickel has been laid in, and from the lard er can be produced as “swell" a meal as ever tickled the palate of a monarch. White pain* and a lot of soap and water has disguised the dim and dusty old building so that its dear est frl»nd would not reeogntie It The patients were taken from the Kiefer hospital to the new one in Board of Health ambulances, each taking six men at a trip. On the return trip the ambulances took back new patients to take the beds vacated by the convalescents. The transfer of patients started early in the morning and it was expected that before night all would be moved. In establishing the new hospital not a cent of extra expense has been Incurred. Much of the equip ment ws* loaned and some of the old court room furniture has been utilized. Such new material aa was purchased will be utilized later in the addition to Kiefer hospital.
