When the government took this
piece of land over tor the establish
ment of a s< hool for the training of
war aviators, with Its accustomed
rapidity of action, it threw 3,000
men onto those wide meadows and
buildings began to spring tip like
mushrooms In an Incredibly short
time there appeared 17 large han
gars, each capable of housing four
of the largest txpe of artny plan*
Tho hulldlngs are about 200 leet
long and half as wide, with saucer
chained roofs, making them resem
ble gigantic mushrooms ir. appear
ance as well as In rapidity or
growth.
In addition to those vast frsm*
bafldtnga, which form a„row nearly
a mile long, there Is a small board

There Is a large school building,
where the aviators will be taught
when they are not actually soaring
In the air, mess buildings, barracks,
hospital and other buildings neces

training aviators who are expected
to loft themselves over the German

so rapidly has the work advanced

hours they were off duty, the com
munity heeamw as lawless as ever

decided It was time to put the place
under martial law, with the result
that a company of soldiers was sent.
Since then order has prevailed

of a regular army captain. who In

ed the wealthy Elliott Slocum Nich
ols. of Bridgeport. Conn . whom she
accuses of conspiring to send her
to the asylum without cause, so
there would he no danger that she
could Influence the late Col Klliott
T. Slocum In the making of his will
Nichols 1s a nephew of the late
millionaire owner of Slocum's Isl
and. |?e arrived |n Detroit Satur
day to attend the trial In circuit
court before Judgp T*es Volrnes In
which MDs Hughes, for 21 years
housekeeper for Slocum. Is trying to
obtain her freedom from the asylum
on a writ of habeas corpus.
"Yes. that’s Mr. Nichols.’’ was the
calm reply of Miss Hughes, when
she was asked to Identify the man.

she testified that Nichols had as
saulted her during nn argument In
the Slocum home
Tho Miss Hughes was left SIO,OOO

hut $4,500 left Most of her money
has been spent, according to her at
