And these 20,000 miles of wire are being used, it should be noted, in addi tion to the 169,000 miles for underground con struction, of which we told you in Talk No. 3. Thus our “airmen” are taking our $10,000,000 construction program right to your very door. They are bringing home to you and to the thou sands of other telephone users in Detroit the many advantages made possible by our twelve building projects and our addition of 655 operators’ sections of switchboard to central offices; for ample equipment of the aerial variety means waiting pairs of wires available to connect new telephones as fast as the city grows and develops in its needs. Here, again, you see we must anticipate the future We must ascertain what sections of Detroit, as yet unoccupied, will build up into homes of telephone users; what districts will un dergo a change in their character and what the nature of that change will be. If service is to be had "on demand,” these forecasts must be made before the develop ment actually begins, or at least in its nitial stages. When this is done, there s no particular difficulty in meeting the s» rvice needs of a city of normal growth. En xigh pairs of wires can ordinarily be extended Vom the underground equipment dowm through WATCH FOR TALK NO. 5, ON INTER OFFICE TRUNK LINES And tifn*- <l» • •*« t,h»* *w.-/t it hl'.cti t ! ed hut " hen t• .*r ill .*pn riiin'd "•'ur Wu.li'f• .in iMirril by • >n*' | »’ •11 jii'an, Si. fit.l. J JACKSON. Mgr. 29.5 WOODWARD AVK.. (David Whitney Bldg.) Sale continues until August Ist. ADVERTISE IN THE TIMES —IT PAYS dicate that there has been no slowing up in the city’s development. We are striving to catch up We are doing our utmost to gain a suffi cient lead on the telephone needs of the city so that telephones may be installed “on demand” as the city crosses the 1,000,000 mark which, at its present rate of growth, it will do very shortly. Full capacity telephone service for all Detroit, and prompt installation everywhere and at all times -that’s the goal of our complete program, and we are leaving noth ing undone that will put all these features in full operation at the earliest possible moment. the district that is build ing up so that a pair will always be available for every person who wishes to order service. But trouble comes with abnormal growth An abnormal growth means an enlargement of organization as well as a great demand for mate rials. Under conditions such as the country has faced for two years, it is extremely difficult to expand the organization. And the great demand in all lines for materials, coupled with the difficul ties of transportation, has put us far behind in our program of improvement and expansion. We have been placed in a most trying position through conditions abso lutely beyond our con trol, and the situation in Detroit today is not materially different from what it has been.
