The Police Jury on last Tues
day accepted the resignation of
Nathal Lorie as Parish Treas
urer, and elected Henry Gaither
in his stead to fill the unex
pired term.
Miss Annie 1. Barnes, the
young and talented editress of
the " Acazlthuts," an excellent
literary paper, published at At
lanla, Ga., is in Natchez, solicit
ing aubscriptionsa to her paper.
It is said that Messrs. carpen
ter Dix & co., of the Natchez
Oil Works will soon build a
large and comn modious building
ifor their business, andil that the
presllus now iredl by thetm
will be turned into an extensive
soap tactory by a company of
gentlemen.
The ectertaiinteint given by
the Ladies Aid Socicty on
Tl'hursdlay evening, thle 8th inst.,
at the resiidence of MLr. Faulning, I
for thbe purpose iof raising
funlids to build a Chapel, was
well attenled. The gold ring,
vwhich was voted to the most

Owing to the inclement
weather,Sprague, the champion
illusionist and ventriloquest did
not have a very large au
dience last Wednesday nighi;
but those who did attend were
allowed to retain their tickets
which will be good for the en
tortainument Friday evening,
and as quite a number of pres
ents will be given away, a
crowded house is anticipated.
Mr. John Hood, a Republi
can, formerly of Natchez, but
at present located at Washing,
ton city, writes to a gentleman
of this parish, in highly com
plimentary terms of congress.

Judging from his letter, Mr
hood has been captivated, if
not converted. by Gen. King.
As evidence that this is with
out doubt the most eligible
point for the crossing of the
Southern Pacific Railroad, nol
withstanding the high, water,
planters from the interior are
able to drive their stock from
the swamp to the Mississippi
hills, without trouble or loss,
while at Delta, opposite Vicks
burg, the trestle work of the
Shreveport Railroad is said to
be two feet under water. This
fect alone, should be sufficient
weight to decide the committee
in favor of Natchez and Vidalia.
