KEual)ptus Trees and 1Malarla.
About 141N,0140 eucalypt Ius trees have
been planted on a large tract of land
in the ilouisn 'amul'ngna by the Trap

by the Italian 4chovernnment. The
vast marshes in the vicinity of Rotme
have exhaled desadly vapors for many
centuries, and no device hitherto em
ployed has diminished their malarial
Influence. But the planting of euca
lyptus treeshas already made Tre
Fontane, the abbey of the Trapl'lbt,+.
habitable throughout the whole year,
although the monks have heretofore
been compelled to desert it during the
sickly season. The result has excited
the wonder of the Italian Govern
ment, and intelligent people every
where are discussing the importance
of introducing the eucalyptus in ev
ery malarial region where it will
grow. The tree is useful for build
ing ships and bridges, 'and also for
railway ties, and as its growth is
rapid the considerations in favor of
its introduction :ir ma:uy. The euca
lyptus thrives in France, t paln, I'or
tugal and Italy, and in Australia it
is especially flourishing. It may not
prove adequate for the removal of
the box of quinilne pills from the
pocket of every resident of New Jer
sey, but It certainly will thrive in
the South, where its Influence is so
much needed to counteract the mias

"This is a toast," he said "which re

have now been 'drunk' forever twen
