LATEST FROM BELOW. The flying West Newton, on her sec ond trip this week, passed St. Paul this morning at 3 o’clock, on her way to Fort Snelling. She returned to our landing at live. By the attention of her officers, we have Galena papers of Thursday. We extract the following: Cholera at Dubuqte. — We learn from the Dubuque stage driver, that but two or three deaths from cholera occurr ed in that city on Tuesday. The disease appears to be on the decline. — Jeff . The Excelsior, Capt. Ward, arrived from St. Louis yesterday at 5 o’clock, with a very heavy load of passengers and freight for up river, and left same eve ning.—.idv. Fok Sr. Paul.— The steamers Saint Paul and Dr. Franklin left yesterday for St. Paul with an average of*3oo passen gers each, and all the freight they could carry. The passenger and freight trade, above Galena, has increased 300 percent, within one year. Minnesota will treble her population the present summer.— Jeff. Hon. \V:n. R. King, of Alabama, is the Democratic nominee for Vice Presi dent. The Steamer Ren Campbell arrived at Galena on Thursday, and was to leave for St. PauPyejterday. Our former fellow-citizen, Mr. John Crombacker, who has been absent in Calitornia two years, was a passenger by the Newton this morning. The Dr. Franklin arrived this morning at hall-past live o clock. We are again indebted to Mr. Melvill for papers. By the following, from the Galena Ad vertiser of last Saturday, it will be seen an amicable arrangement has been made between the Galena and Keokuk packets, in regard to carrying the river mail. We, and the whole upper country, are glad of it: Wc understand that MeCune & Co., proprietors of the Keokuk packets, have made arrangements for carrying the mails between ft. Louis and Galena, with the Galena boats, and that they are to com mence tiic service at once. The follow ing commanders have been consulted and agree to tile proposition : Minnesota, Gleiin, leaves St. Louis Monday. Brunette. Barger, leaves St. Louis Tuesday. Gulden Era, Bersie, leaves St. Louis Friday. Saranac, Itilev. leaves St. Louis Saturday. Further arrangements will probably be made for Wednesday and Thursday, as follows : Shanamlo.ih, -, leaves St. Louis Wednesday. Danube, Green, leaves St. L mis Thursday. So the arrangement is completed at list, in a manner very similar to that which we have suggested from time to time, for some months past. The Keo kuk Packet Company’s boats will no long er appear at our Levee, but we have se cured all the advantages that would have accrued, had they done so. M mm:. —At the W hig Convention for lln- -till Congressional District in Maine held sit. Augusta on the 2a:h ult., Hon. Divid C. Magoon, of Rath, was iinani iiiaiisly chosen a Delegate to the Whig National Convention. He was instructed to vote for Gen. Scott. Tl le Whig Congressional Convention lor the a h District, assembled at Dover on die 2'),li nil., and iiiianiinous’y nomi nated Hon. E Waslibnnie, Jr., the pres ent member of Congies. for re-election. Col. VV. H. Mills, of Hangor, was cho sen delegate to the IN lug National Con vention. He was also instructed for Seott. Win. K. Kimball lias been nominated by the Loco Focos of the Oxford and Lincoln district as their candidate for Congress, to fill the vacancy occasioned by the death of Hon. Charles Andrews. Hon. Isaac Reed is the Whig candidate. From the Bluffs—Emigrants Re turning, &c.—The Delaware relumed last evening from Council Bluffs, having performed tlie trip to that point si ml hack, taking upwards ol (iOO tuns of freight, in thirteen days and a half. She reached the Bluffs on the 2<>th, and si few hours after the Honduras landed, an ! the day following the two boats discharged 1,100 barrtds of flour arid odier provisions lice led, in like quantities, into the town and glutted the market. 1 lour, which had been the day previous selling at .'fttj and 67 per hundred, declined to 6 7 and 68 per bid., and the general impression was, it would go down to tt'fi. The cap tain of the Honduras, who had a consid erable quantity on his own account, stored it, and returned in company with the Delaware. Kanesville. Irotn all accounts, is vet thronged with Mermans, the Cali fornian and Oregon emigrants having nearly all left. Painful minors of sickness among the emigrants on the plains, have recently reached Kanesville and points below. Tiie cholera, it is said, or a disease re sum'd.ng it, has played havoc with some of the trains, and tiie Indians are very troublesome Several skirmishes have taken place between them and the emi grants, near the frontier, and killed and wounded are reported on both sides. These rumors, we have reason to be lieve and hope, are in a great degree un founded. Among the passengers on the Dcla- j ware was Mr. Thomas and another gen tleman, returning Californians, after reaching Blue river, some one hundred and fifty miles from St. Joseph. They give as reasons lor their return, the ap pearance of cholera among the emigrants, and the evident difficulties they would have to encounter, not only incident to the trips, but from the Indians. They bring their stock with them. Others will lollow their example. The Dela ware reports the health of the Missouri towns good since the departure of the emigrants. She returns to the Bluffs. — St. Louis Intel. Sioux Treaty. —The Washington Re public of the 27th makes no mention of the Sioux Treaty, reported to have been ratified on the 26‘th—hence wc conclude, that the report was not true. Wolves are getting troublesome in Grant county, and the citizens have de termined on the process of summary ejectment ; and accordingly we find the following in the Herald : Grand Wolf Hunt —At the Head of Grant, on Saturday, the sth of June.— Every body is requested to meet at Mr. Crolt’s house, in the morning at nine o’clock, lor drill preliminaries, and to re ceive all necessary orders for the cam paign. It is expected every man in the regiment will have one or more dogs, a gun and a tin horn. Commissioned offi cers of the Wisconsin Militia arc polite ly invited to be on parade ; and all hero: s of the Black Hawk War. The old gentleman who thought he could teach girls how to make love, is about erecting an academy for the pur pose of instructing fleas in the art of jumping. The man who had to lower his shirt collar to pass under the Wheeling Bridge, arrived in Cincinnati last week. He was laboring under a slight attack of the col lar-y morbus. Judge Edmo.vds.—The Albany Knick erbocker says that in consequence of the strange conduct of this gentleman with reference to the spirit rappings, visions, &c., several gentlemen of the bar in that city, intend to apply to Gov. Hunt for a commission lo inquire into Lis sanity. The Baltimore and Ohio Railroad Com pany are now working a locomotive up a grade 520 feet lo the mile. This grade occurs at the tunnel, where a temporary track has been laid over the mountain, for the purpose of transporting material for the road beyond, in advance of open ing that work. The locomotive used weighs 21 tons, and the ordinary load at tached lo it, in addition to its own weight is twelve tons. This grade has thus far been worked with regularity and safety. The whole power obtained is in the or dinary adhesion of the driving wheels. Indi ans About.—The Mineral Point Tribune of last week notices the appear- ance of a large body of Indians in that quarter, on their way north. They were removed to the Missouri country last fail !>\ the State Government, but disliking their new quarters, leave come hack to their old ones. The Madison Democrat mentions that a large band parsed through that town on their way to Sheboygan.— -Milwet like' Sc alia el. B. G. Ferris, of Ithaca, in this State, formerly Member o! The consumption in the United States the past 3!) years lias increased rapidly. In 1821, the consumption per head to the inhabitants of the United States was one pound four ounces. In 1830. the propor tion had increased to three pounds per head, the foreign price having fallen f>o per cent. Alter the 31st of December, 1830, codec paid two cents, and in 1831, one cent ; after which it was free. The importation in the year 1831 doubled in consequence of the reduced duty, and the consumption per head for the four years ending with 1842 averaged six pounds per head, having quadrupled to each inhabitant since 1821.
