[From the Louisville Journal.] THE RIVAL. Thou, lady fair, art very beautiful, Thy dark eye* with a starry splendor bum, That’s like the gorgeous night of Southern skl**s ; Thy lightly penciled, arching brows He like Soft, dreamy shadows on thy forehead proud, That like a white Camelia looks beneath The waves of rich, dark auburn hair, that part t'pon Its perfect page of loveliness; The red rose flush upon thy rounded cheek Is delicately painted as it were The coltffing of sum- Joyous dream ; thy smile Is sweet as music that glides o’er thy bright And Chiseled lip, wakening youug love’s romance With in enchanting spell. Thy queenly form Is all that l have dreamed of Womanhood; Stately, and yet as graceful In I s trea-l As some gazelle in its own native wild. Thy voice’s soft, poetic sound Is one That echoes long In memory’s chambers dim : Once heard it will not pass away, but haunts The soul as songs the exile’s dream, as tones That linger In the captive’s burning heart, As music that the sick and weary h**ar In some wild fever spell; It seems like home, And Heaven, and a!l things beautiful an t fair. lAdv, It Is not strange that he has knelt And made an offering of his love before Thy proud and sunny shrine. Met Link* that I Had loved thee t»»o, had 1 been sunned beneath Thine eyes like him, and listened to the soft And graceful flatteries of thy lip, which are The poetry of truth, and not the cold And hollow compliments of dally life; Whose falsehood shocks and Jars the spirit like Harsh, reckless hands that sweep o’er some frail harp. I blame hlin not that he has cast his dream, Ills early dream away, arid knelt to thee ; He Is of beauty a wild worshipper! And thou the great high priestess art, of this Fair faith. He loved me once; my s >ul’s high gifts Were weak to bind a wandering spirit star Like him ; the fragile chain has fallen down Beneath thy look, and lies In fragments round My weary, aimless life. I s®e him bend O'er thee in gay and festive halls like some Wild Has tern devotee, that worships low The bright Are altar, where forever bum The flames of his high faith. 1 stifle back The tear that wells up from my sickened heart. And turn and smile again, lest he should see The broken charm of my young life. I blame Thee not that thou hast borne away the gem That bound up all my heart’s enchantment in Its magic touch ; that thou hast now transferred The only flower within the desert wild Of mv lone youth ; that thou hast won the palm Whose stately cooling shadow’ was the dream That chaered my pilgrim spirit in it* march O’er life’s w ide arid waste. I Marne thee not— -1 only wish that I were changed like him. Thou dost not love him, lady fair; thine e3’es With starry, tranquil gate meet his and seem To catch no shadow from the mournful, deep Regard he bends on thee. There is an Isle, A soft blue Isle, that in the di-tince lies Of Ideal life, and thou upon its bright Dream shores hast not gene forth to meet with him. He fancies thou art there. A blind and wild Idolator, he cannot see that thou Wilt never meet him In one thought of love. Some day perhaps he’ll waken up, as I Ilave done, to see the mirage dls tppear And wonder at his own delusion wide. Thy practiced, low, ..Eoleaii tones deceive His ear, but they will change their measure soon, When thou hast wearied of thy conquest prou I, And he will learn that he ha* been a toy in woman’s hand : that thought will cure his love But pride will bleed at every vein. They say That thou art but a cold coquette ; they sa\ It Is the pastime of thy life to t »ueh The chords of human love, and make them Isiund To madness ’neath thy hand; ’tis said that thou Dost lightly tread on living tortured hearts, As steps the conqueror o’er the flowers that pave His proud triumphal path. Thou dost remind Me of the vampires of the olden time, Who fed on blood they rung out drop by drop From hapless victims, wrapt perchance' in s m<) Klysian dream; and of the insects in The western wilderness that live upon The elk’s warm brain. ’Tis strange that thou canst sport With heart-strings thus, and make the costliest gems Of feeling playthings for thy reckless hand. I do forgive thee all the hitter wrong Of my sad life. I shall forget him soon, My heart is proud, a marble monument W ill soon rise o’er the aslies of young love. W hat though its ghost may sometime* wander buck To haunt me in the lone arcades of life, And whisper in Its dim and dreary tones Of happiness forever gone? 1 shall Not shrink, for every year that passes by Will make the solemn shade less sad, and tiring Me nearer to a green and quiet grave. ‘What dogs are these, Jasper?’inquired a gentleman, the other day, of a lad who was dragging a couple of waspish looking terriers along a street in Edinburgh. -1 dinna ken, sir, replied the urchin, ‘they cam wi’ the railway, and dinna ken whnr to gang.’ ‘Lame! was there ever such strong lye as this before ? I shall die if you do. It nearly kills me now to eat two dollars and a halfs worth, and if vou raise the price to three dollars I shall die in two days. Don’t do it, if you please ” A writer in one of the monthlies, thus hits ofT a national peculiarity : “I was sailing along the Grand Canal, in Venice one morning in a gondola w ith a New York friend, when w e espied, for the first time, the black porter of the Leone Bianco Hotel, basking in the sun. Up rose my friend and cried out, ‘lsay. Buck, how did you get there-'’ Great was the darkey's joy, as he replied, on the broad grin. ‘Lord bless me. Mas,’ is you American ?’ ‘Well I am.’ was the reply, ‘what do you do here ?’ With a still in tenser grin, shutting up both eyes and chuckling, Ebony replied, “Dey pots me out here in front for a bait to trap de Americans wid!’ ” The publishers of New- York appear to be prosperous.
