From the Gelena Advertiser, May til State ot Trade. The news received during the week has produced the very best feelings throughout the city and community. It is rare that a journalist has an opportuni ty of recording so much to give satisfac tion to all classes as we have this week. The news lirst received was of a political character, end announced the nomination of General Scott to the Presidency bv the Baltimoro Whig Convention. This piece of intelligence, so far as we observed, produced a joy as general among the peo ple as if it had not been of a political complexion. Every man sceme lto con sider it an omen of the happiest kind, and his success in the coming campaign as natural and as necessary to the carry ing out of the great system of internal improvement going on in the West, as the employment of labor and capital. The next intelligence that arrived concerned the railroad—its commencement—the probable time of breaking ground—ter minus and other collateral matters, which may be gathered from articles and para graphs in another part of this paper.— The third and last item of news was tele graphic despatches from Washington an nouncing the ratilieation of the Sioux Treaties. As we have before remarked, the dilatorincss of the Senate in this mat ter has had a very prejudicial effect upon emigration and business in Minnesota, and the whole Territory may be said to have been laying on its oars, waiting for the ratification of the Senate. The pros pects for a very large and increased wholesale and retail trade above and be low, arc now of the most flattering char acter Nearly $2,000,000 will be paid out in Minnesota before the close of navi gation this full, which is enough to stimu late travel, enterprise and manufactures to the highest degree. Travel to and from the East seems to be increasing in an acccllerated propor tion, and intercourse of a social and com mercial character is becoming more and more intimate and related, and from this time up to the opening of a Railroad to Chicago, we put it down that the travel and business will be doubled, thereafter to increase with measureless prospertv. 1 The dry weather continues and the riv ers arc falling, but the crops have not suffered much, and steamers of the larg est class continue to make their regular trips both above and below, but should the present weather continue the former may suffer somewhat, and the latter be compelled to lay up for a few weeks. „ The prognostics relative to the railroad, treaties, nomination for the presidency, which we have been making for some time past, liavi ig been fulfilled, we still beg the reader to bear in mind another prophecy of ours, that here is to grow up one ut the largest, if not one of the very largest cities in the Northwest, North ot St. Louis—that our growth is just beginning, and that there will he as much difference between of 18;l2 and Galena of 1857, as between the same place in 1827 and 1852. The best feeling prevails among our business men and our miners, farmers and mechanics, and they look forward to : an animated trade—good prices for min eral, grain, beef, pork and pro luce, and j abundance of work for good wages. Produce Market— -Thetrade ingrain is mostly over, until the gathering of the coming crops. Considerable quantities of ! Barley and Oats remain in first hands, and with the coming low water and in creasing rate of freights will not be like ly to he brought forward at present. Of farm produce there is still a good demand for Butter, Cheese and Eggs, the latter particularly, being in sharp request at 10 cents. Currents and Gooseberries, green, and Strawberries, the latter not abundant, are the only fruits offered in our market. V cgetahles are still rather small in size and meagre in quantity. Every culinary plant brings great prices in a market. Cattle— We have nothing further to add than that prices are fully sustained, and the general opinion seems to he that good grass fed beef will he half a dollar a hundred higher next fall than last season, and pork for packing 75 cents. If farm ers arc unable to sell their grain at remu nerating prices, certainly they have no small show of compensation in the advance in beef and pork, which have nearly doubled in prices in seven years. Death or David Graham, Esq.— The Evening Mirror announces this event. — It avus generally rumored yesterday lore noon, and is no doubt so. The distin guished advocate went to Europe early in January, in the hope of a restoration of his then shattered health from a change of climate. He breathed his last in Italy. Mr. Graham Avas an eminent member of the Ncav York bar, as his father, Da vid Graham, sen., deceased twelve years since, Avas before him. As a jury law yer, he had fcAV superiors in this country, uniting an impressive and persuasive manner, Avitli great astuteness of judg ment and tact, and skill in the manage ment of his cause. His practice Avas a large and lucrative one, embracing many of the most important capital cases tried in this city within the past fifteen or tAventy years. Not the least remarkable instance of his success Avas the complica ted and protracted trial of Polly Bodine for murder on Staten Island. The father of Mr. Graham Avas an emigrant from the north of Ireland. He Avas of Scotch descent, and remotely con nected Avith the house of Montrose. Mr. Graham, jun., Avas born in the city of London, Avhile his parents.were en route for the United States. Of late years his health Avas threatened by pulmonary symptoms, which assumed so decided a form last season as to impel him to the European tour, from Avhich it Avas not his fortune to return. He died at the age of 43. leaving a widoAV and five child ren—JV. Y. Times, 19/A. WIIA i.es.— The Nantucket Mirror says some prospect of the return of the scenes of the early period of whaling, when vessels were fitted out for a feAV days or weeks to capture Avhales on the coast.— About a week since, three AA'ere seen from Siasconnet, several have been taken from Martha s 1 ineyard, and five have been caught off Southampton, Long Is land. 8 LATEST INTELLIGENCE. The fine little steamer Black Hawk, arrived last night, and is going into the Minnesota river trade. Col. Robertson and others had started down to procure a boat for this purpose, not having been able to make terms with the Tiger. They met the Black Hawk at Point Douglass and returned. She is just the boat, we want lor this trade. The Franklin also arrived last night. IN e select what follows from the papers : We had the pleasure, yesterday, of aj call from Mr. Carey, of Philadelphia, the very able and well known writer on po litical economy. He is a son of the late Matthew Carey, whose memory is hon ored everywhere in the United States, and the son honors the lather. Mr. C. visits our part of the country on a tour of observation, and is highly pleased with what he has seen. To-day he goes up on (he Dr. Franklin to Minnesota. Ga lena »ldv. Post Office Oterations. —The Post Master General has established a new Post Office at Minnesota City, Wabasha county, Minnesota Territory: Robert Pike, Postmaster. The following bills passed the House of Representatives on the 22d: A hill to appropriate lands for the sup port of schools in certain townships and fractional townships in the Territory of Minnesota not heretofore provided for. Also, the hill to reduce and define the boundaries of the military reserve at the St. Peter's river, in the Territory of Min nesota. The Legislature of Illinois adjourned last Wednesday. They passed an act le galizing all the acts of the Board of Di rectors of the Ohio and Mississippi Rail road, (provided they needed legalizing,) and gave them new powers in regard to procuring the right of way. The protest ol our City Council was treated with contempt—the legislators thinking they could legislate over their own territory in their own wav. By a little round-about legislation it is said that the power exists now to con struct the St. Louis and Terre Haute Railroad, by taking it via Belleville.— That’s better than we expected.— Sl. Louis News. Orson llyi>e Rejected.— The nomi nation of Orson llydc as one of the Judg es of Utah, has been rejected by the Sen ate. Heavy arrivals and the considerable reduction in the price of coffee at New Orleans, has caused a corresponding de cline here. The telegraph informs us of the sale of 7.000 bags on the 21st inst.at 8 cents. This has quite upset previous quotations here, and holders of recent ar rivals have sent their consignments to store, rather than submit tc the views of buyers. Good Rio cannot find purchas ers at over 8 1-5 and 0 1-2 cents, and prime at 9 3-5 cents. — SI. Louis News.
