s©aTair. [We do not think our favorite new poetess, L. Virginia Smith, Is appreciated by the literary public as yet; but It must be taken Into consideration that merit such as hers Is ever modest, and averse to tt eking tame. What we have said on various occasions of other pieces from her gifted pen, Is equally applicable to the following. We don’t know how It is, but our eye never meets her name when glancing over our exchanges, unless our right hand goes Intuitively forth to gra*p the aclssors.—Minneso- TIAK.) From the Memphis Enquirer. VOICES. BY L. VIRGINIA SMITH. The Voice Is Beauty’s true Interpreter and Truth’s Translator. Listen to the melodies Of Nature, to the chiming or the Uours, The mighty music of continuous thought. The rushing sweep of some advancing Soul, And are they uot all eloquent to thee, Of glory and of beauty ? Sterling Truth Lives also in the voice, for we employ But cannot fetter it with guile, or mask Its feeling with deceit. It shudders low Vlth terror inarticulate, It moans Reproaches that we will not syllable, It falters with the burden of a love Unutterable, and betrays the hate We struggle to deny. Around the hearth Are mingled voices of the household’s glee, And loving tones whose wealth of teudertiesS Reveals how beautiful and true, the hearts Warm beating in white bosoms. Bards that strike The key-note to the music mysteries Of other minds, must steal a iuaster-chord From Nature, stirring in silent soul Sort symphonies. The waking-note may be The silver trumpet-call of morn, the sigh Of weary waters panting up the shore, To die upon the *ands, low undertones Of shy, sweet laughter from the growing flowers, On midnight’s monody, that deep and slow Creeps through the wild witch-hazel tree, and swells High In the organ-pines. To stir the soul With holier harmonies, the poet takes The voice of Memory,—*tls like the call Of the muzziu on his minaret Sounding “to prayer! to prayer!'’ Re-echoing The lost love-music of the olden time, The songs of home, the merry-ringing shouts About the hedges, over treasures found, Rich ruby berries, or the golden-browu Ripe nuts down-dropping on the yellow leaves. And then no summer sunshine was so bright, At one suit smile, no azure sky so clear As one blue eye, and then in all the world There seemed no music save one tlute-like voice Arid that was our sweet mother’s. Ah! the drat Sad exile from tnat smile, and eye, and tone, Was tilence , —silence brooding o’er decay, The voice was gone,—we knew so well its note Should answer ours no more ;—no, not if all The universe were void, and we within The vaulted vast, stood siill and lon*-, to call, — And yearn—and listen ! Mournfully we dwell Awhile upon the earth, amid It* toil And yet one voice of ours Can enter Heaven,—the whispering of prayer. Like some meek pigriin from a shore uiar, Warm-welcomed to the festival or kings, It mingles in the seraph’s rushing strain That fills the .reties of th’ eternal courts With “ Holy. b*»iy evermorea faint Soft-ringing “Alleluia!” Sleeping with a Woman.— A friend in Stockbridge, sends us the following anecdote of Rev. Zeb. Twitchell, a Metho dist clergyman, in lull and regular stand ing, and a number of the Vermont Con ference. At one time he represented Stockbridge in tlie State Legislature. Zeb, says our informant, is a man of fair talents, both as a preacher and a mu sician In the pulpit lie is grave, solemn, dignified—a thorough, systematic sermon izer; but out of the pulpit, there is no man living who is more lull of fun and drollery. On one occasion, he was wend ing his way to the seat of the annual conference ot ministers, in company with another clergy min. Passing by a* coun try inn, he remarked to bis companion : “ The last time that l stopped at that tavern, I slept with the. landlord's wife." In utter astonishment his clerical friend wanted to know what he meant. 11 I mean just what I say,” roj.UoJ Zob \ and on went the two travelers in unbro ken silence, until they reached the Con ference. In the early part of the session, the Conference sat with closed doors, for the purpose of transacting private busi ness, and especially to attend to the an nual examination of each man’s private character, or rather conduct during the past year. For this purpose, the clerk called the roll, as was the custom, and in due course Zeb’s name was called. “Does any one know aught against the conduct of brother Twitehell, during the past year ?” asked the Bishop, who was the presiding officer. After a moment’s silence, Zeb’s trav eling companion arose from his seat, and with a heavy heart, grave, demure counte nance, said that he had a duty to perform, one that he owed to God, to the Church, and to himself. He must, therefore, dis charge it fearlessly.thoughwith tremhling. He then related what Zeb had told him while passing the tavern, how lie slept with the landlord’s wife, &c. The grave body of ministers were struck as with a thunderbolt; although a few smiled, and glanced first upon Zeb, and then upon the Bishop, knowingly, for they knew better than others the character of the accused. The Bishop called up brother T., and asked him what he had to say in relation to so serious a charge. Zeb arose and said: “ I did the deed ! I never lie.” Then, pausing with an awful serious ness, he proceeded with slow and solemn deliberation: “ There was one little circumstance, however, connected with the affair, I did not name to the brother. It may not have much weight with the Conference, but, although it may be deemed of trilling importance,! will state it. When I slept with the landlord's wife, as l told the brother, / kept the tavern myself /” The long and troubled countenances re laxed, a titter followed, and the next name on the roll was called. Custom and Costume.— Mr. Willis, in a letter to the Home Journal from the Island of St. Thomas, says of the female costume: “ Nakedness I find, is to a certain de gree a matter of climate. Modesty makes no note of anything under six years of age. Black babies go conveniently bare to the end of life’s first chapter. With the same fitness and adaption to the lat -1 ude, shoes and stocking are dispensed with; and the young black girls with ear rings worth two or three hundred dollars, Chemises edged with lace, and skirts of brilliant colors, parade in stateliness, pro truding at each step five shining toe nails uncompressed by morocco. Two ebony shoulders, unliable to tan, enjoy the open air, by the same philosophy; and they shine along tlie street, as these black •wans sail past, with the luxuriance of effect unknown on the sidewalks of tem perate latitudes.” An Ache. —City folks visiting the oountry, may at all times roughly calculate the contents of any plot of ground by re membering that a lot 196 feet by 220, contains just one acre.— Far. and JMech. af1,3»33& aayrgs.
