august. BV WM. D. GALLAGHER* Dust on thy mantle! dust, Bright Summer, on thy livery ot green ! A tarnish, as or rust, Dims thy late brilliant sheen : And thy voung glories—leaf, and hud, and flower— Change coineth over them with every hour. Thee hath the August sun lxxAM on with hot, and tierce, and brassy face; And still and lazily run, Scarce whispering in their pare, The half-dried rivulet*, that lately sent A shout or gladness up, as on they went. Flame-like. the long midday, With not so much of sweet air as hath etlrr’d The down upon the spray. Where rests the panting bird. Dozing away the hot and tedious noon, With fitful twitter, sadly out of tune* Seeds in the sultry air, And gossamer web-work on the sleeping tie**; E’en the tall pun s, that rear Their plumes to catch the breeze. The slightest breeze from the uiifn-shenlnf west, partake the general languor, a *d deep rest. Happy, as man may be, Stretch’d on his back, in homely bean-vine bow er, While the voluptuous bee Robs each surrounding rlowrr, And prattling chlldliSotl clambers o’er his breast, The husbaudmau enjoys his uoofiday rest. Against the hazy sty The thin and fleecy cloud.-, unmoving, rest, Beneath them far, yet high In the dim, distant west, The vulture, scenting thence its carrinn-fare, bails, slowly circling iu the 6unny air. Soberly. In the shade, Repose the patient cow, and toll-wom ox ; Or In the shoal stream wade, Shelter’d by Jutting rocks: The fleecy flock, fly-scourged and restless, rush Jladly from fence to fence, from bush to bush. Tediously pass the hours. And vegetation wilts, with blister’d root, And droop the thirsting flow ers, Where tin slant sunbeams shoot: But of each tall, old tree, the lengthening line, blow-creeping eastward, marks the day’s decline. Faster, along the plain, Moves now the shade.and on the meadow’s edge; The kine are forth again, The bird flits in the hedge. Now in the molten wr*t sinks the hot sun. Welcome, mild eve ! —the 6Ultry day Is done. Pleasantly contest tliou, Dew of the evening, to the crisped up grass; And the curiM corn-blades bow, As the light breezes pass That their parch’d lips may feel thee, and expand, Thou sweet reviver of the fever’d laud. So, to the thirsting sou!, Cometh the dew of the Almighty’s luve ; And the scathed heart, made wnole, Turncib in Joy above, To where the spirit freely may expand, And rove, uuiraiuineAi, iu that “better land.” A Happy Retort.— An instance of Irish readiness at repartee occurred the other day at the capito), which is too good to be lost. Certain members of Congress, finding the debates rather dry in the House, | •tepped out to refresh their thirsty spirits at Casparish's refrectory, which is con veniently contiguous. As they passed out, they saw some eight or nine laborers harnessed to a sled, hauling a stone about i heavy enough for one horse, while one, acting as driver, leisurely walked along aide. (All the laborers are on a per diem al lowance, as well as the members.) Pausing to witness this operation— which seemed to present a parallel to their own arduous labors in the public •ervice—one of the members addressing the “ driver,” said— “ Well, friends, you are making your selves horses, I see 1” ■“Yes,” was the prompt rejoinder,; 41 an< l hy the powers, its a mighty sight better than making asses of ourselves, as *nmi» of yon nrp fining up tKoro.” The prevailing report is, that the con vocation abruptly closed, and every man of that party palronized Casparish to the fullest extent of two julins instead of one.— Soul hern Press. • Fluent Talkers.— Roll an empty 1 barrel down hill, and what a rattling noise it makes! So with an empty carriage over a pavement! So with an einply head. When it contains a lew sealtering ideas, everybody can hear them rattle.— You can almost see Ihcm, when the Ici low that carries such a head passes bv you. Have you not such an individual m your mind’s eye? We have. His name may be Dick. John, Jim or Jo— but he is the same everywhere—he wags the same tongue, shoots forth the same ideas. He thinks he is wise, but every body else thinks he is a fool. Had he real knowledge he would talk less and | say more. Generally, a man of sterling talents, talks very little, yet every word tells.. Addison was a person of this des cription. He was always embarrassed in company, Some of our best living au- 1 thors—men of genius and talent—have I been noted for their paucity of words in j common conversation. Yet men who! know scarcely more than twice two make four, are always rattling off words. And pass for persons of some consequence.— They utter sentences without meaning, and words that would puzzle a diclionavv to understand. Anecdote.— The following is ‘’deci dedly good —A storekeeper a few days since, purchased of an Irish woman a quan tity ot butter, the lumps of which, intend ed for pounds, lie “ weighed in the ba'ajicc »nd found wanting.” “ Sure it's yer own fault, if they are light.” said Biddy, in reply to the complaint of the buyer. “ It’s yer own fault, sir, for wasn’t it a pound of soap I bought here myself, that I had in the other end of the scales when I weighed ’em ?” The storekeeper had nothing further to say on the subject. Thheat to Swallow a Steam Boiler. • \ wc "'y- seven J' ear » ago, a committee in the House of Commons was appointed to examine into the state ol steam naviga tion. Lord Stanley (now the Earl of Derby,) was chairman of that committee, and on Robert Stevenson, the eminent engineer, speaking of the probability of ■teamships crossing the Atlantic, Lord *4 1 , rose * rom his feet and exclaimed, Uoodl heavens! what did you say ? If »teamsh.ps cross the Atlantic. I w'ill eat the boiler of the first boat!” Ham™h£T n ° r an J d Conncil of New wh k'' 6 pa u doned Kat « Virginia Poole, who threw her infant out of the car window while traveling, an d she will be restored from the State Prison to soci ety on the 25th of August next. Nature is a great admirer of fair play. .Good looking girls are generally poor— -.while your little, dumpy, ill looking wo men have generally more ‘ spondulicks’ l than they know wliat to do with. ®f n j- Lereau, one of Scott’s old sold ies in the campaigns of 1812-14, went to Niagara, dressed in the uniform he Wore at the battle of Lundy’s Lane. a&iaaa aavaa. THE GREEN MOUNTAIN VEGETABLE OINTMENT. The power of the Green Mountain Vegetable Ointment Is astonishingly great. There Is no medicine known that can surpass It in prompt and energetic action. Applied in sufficient quantities to the body, In the viciuity of the tnost highly inflamed part*, whether external or internal. It at once subdues the inttamation and pain. It will quiet the most 6i angry” looking wounds, soften and reduce swell ings of the hardest kind, and purify and restore to perfect soundness old and inveterate sort's. Among the diseases to which this wonderful Ointment is adapted are the fol lowing : Glandular swelling?, ague in the face, swelled breasts and sore nipples of nursing women, bronchitis, felons and ring worms, scald head, and Is an invaluable dressing for burns, scalds and drawn blisters, shingles, erysipelas, plies, Inflamatiou of the eyes yields to its power immediately ; all bru’isees and fresh cut wounds are cured with great rapidity, fever sores and scroffulous sores are soon changed iuto a healing condition, and frequenly entirely cured. GKAEFENBEIIG DYSENTERY SYRUP. Tliis celebrated and unrivalled medicine is of immediate efficacy In the most violent and obstinate cases of dysen tery, diarrhoea, bloody flux, Asiatic cholera, cholera mor bus, cholera Inrantum, looseness of the bowels, griping* and all other irregularities of the intestines. The causes of the above various complaints are various, fom“tim s they are atmospheric; sometimes they arise from the eating of unripe or unwholesome food; sometim •* from the use of river water; sometimes from a natural predi*iiosition of the system; sometimes from teething— children are frequently affected without any noticeable cause. But no matter what the origin, this syrup Is sov reign, in the most sickly tropical countries as well as the most temperate climes. The following directions should lie carefully observed. Unlike all other medicines ottered for similar complaints, this syrup acts spool deal v upon the secretion*, restoring them at once to health. Other dysen tary m merely allay the more violent symptoms— this cures! THE GRAEFENBERG CONSUMPTIVE BALM. It is beyond all question true that the Consumption (phthisic pulmonarls) Is a curable disease. Some of the ablest medical writers assert this; among whom we may cite tiie celebrated names of La>nec, Andral, Cruvil ller, Stokes and Williams. Their researches, as well as tiie more recent ones of Rogee and Boudet, that so far from pulmonary tubercle being necessarily fatal, It Is spon taneously cured by uature in a va*t number of cases, even when large ulcers have been formed on the lungs. The great object, is to arrest the progress of the ulcers (or tubercles) upon the lungs, and to heal them perma nently. Health will then follow. This the Gra fenberg Consumptive Balm will do, and It is believed to be the only remedy ever discovered. It act* at once upon the tubercles and invariably arrests their progress, and restores the lungs to soundness, it will not of course r 'place those portions of the lungs already consumed, but it will heal what maybe left; leaving the Individual in health, though It may be with diminished lungs. For violent inrlaniatioii, dlm n ss and lading of the sight, weakness of the eyes, invol untary weeping, foreign substances in the eye?, etc., it is a pos.tive and sptredy cure. GRAEFENBERG CHILDREN’S PANACEA. A most strange and Incredible fact m-.'cts us at the verv threshold of our remarks on this valuable medicine, it is this: that no ni “dicine prepared adapted to the various dis eases of children and youth Inis ever been off red to the j public, while at the same time it is established bv the 1 most accurate tables of mortality that one-half of the hu- i man family die before reaching the age of five years. | We should suppose that to this gj-eat class of human puf- j f rers—tills one-lialf of the race—the most anxious and : earnest attention nvould have been given; that medical skill would have be n tasked to its utmost capacity to find out a medicin' to which mothers and nurses might report under the constantly recurring n.-ccsslil s which pres, nt themselves In this connection. The world i* literailv crowded with m dicines for adults, but to Uivsuffering of children no one ha* seemed b» turn proper attention. No one has regarded their condition. No one has seemed to think it possible that the ravages of disease and death among them might be stayed. It Is true that there ar * numerous Vermifuges and Cordials or some value, but each of these are confined exdu*ively to on * or two forms of disease. The Graefenberg Children’s Panacea is tiie only m< dicine extant to either h mispiiere that is at nil noitiiv of being anted a Children’s Medicine; or that sup plies the groat want alluded to.
