Progress of the Were people hereabout to read nothing a but the Pierce and King paper*, they o would be compelled to believe the whole country was in a blaze of enthusiasm for these worthies; tlwt American citizens j had ceased to be grateful in remembrance o of the daring deeds and noble services ; s of their war-worn heroes; that mediocri- | J tv and obscurity had become the goal n of reward at their hands ; and that West- j i ern people, particularly, were about to J s stultify themselves by voting for men who : have, during their whole public lives,, j sat in the councils of the nation with their : ( hands and voices uplifted, stroßg and loud, I against everything Western. But the 1 voters of the United States are about to j be guilty of no such absurdity. Bv every e mail the accounts, public and private,! strengthen the prospects of Scott and * Graham. Private letters, not at all writ- 1 ten for effect, confirm what we see in our j exchanges. We make a few extracts j 1 from the latter source, giving the latest j s appearance of things from some of the . most important States : I j Of North Carolina, the Raleigh Regis- ; ter says : 11 We would say to our friends abroad: - Lose not your confidence in the coni inn- •" ed ascendency of Whig principles in North Carolina! The State is Whig ,( as ever. Local causes have had every 1 thing to do with Reid’s election —national ■politics nothing. In November, when the causes are removed, or can have no inllu- ‘ dice, the ISt i!e trill go for Scott and 1 Graham l>y thousands, For ourselves, we shall enter upon the contest before us ‘ with undiminished hope and unabated ‘ ardor. Georgia. —The Republic publishes the , proceedings of the Scott Whigs in Geor gia. Forty counties were represented J We see that the Webster and Jenkins 1 ticket has been withdrawn. The Repub- 1 lie says : •• We are assured that the Scott * Whigs in Georgia are now in high spirits, j • and that the conviction is becoming strong- ; cr and stronger that the Slate can and 1 will be carried for the regular Whig nom- ; inees.” 1 Prospect in New York. —The Al- J bany F.veiling Journal says, things look right in New York. The Whigs appro- j' ciate the importance of the issues, and [ have entered cheerfully outlie labor of i Organization. ••Small potato” difficul ties arc all forgotten, or adjourned to such J times as they can do no mischief. The . State is being more perfectly organized 1 than ever before. An organization siini- 1 larly close in Illinois would carry the j State for Scott, without a doubt. j- From Ohio. —A gentleman from Ma honing county, Ohio, writes to the New Y'ork tribune: ••Never again put down Ohio as one of the doubtful States. In- !' (liana and Michigan may be doubtful, but I Ohio is for Scott. F.very body is satis- ' lied with Scott's nomination, and those j, who left us on Taylor are coining back i by hundreds. Many who voted for Gen. Cass, will now vote for Hale. I have rarely been mistuked in the vote of any State, and cannot be now.” Hon. D. 11. , Tildcn has written a long letter to Mr. J Giddings, giving his reason for support- ' ing Gen. Scott. It is published in pam phlet form, is an able production, and will exert a good inlluence. Harmony Restored. —Tile Whigs of New York seem to have forgotten all their old differences, and march manfully up to the work of rolling up a ”0,000 majority for Scott. For the next two months nothing short of a house on lire can make a New York Whig turn from j his purpose. New Youk and New Jersey.— The People in Council. —The New York Tri bune says, twenty thousand Whigs turned out in New York city, to welcome the return of the Whig members of Congress, j On the 2d instant, the Whigs of New Jersey showed that they are not only thoroughly awake, but enthusiastically at work for Scott. On that day, there were ' some ten thousand liv e Whigs added to 1 the population of Trenton. They held a ; meeting on the old battle ground. Gov. Pennington presided. The occasion was I a Convention to nominate an electoral j ticket. A Sign in Pennsylvania worth Re-! cording. —A meeting of Democrats, who J have never voted a whig ticket, but whoi now go for Scott and Graham, was held in Hellain township, York county, on Satur the 21st ult. One hundred and twenty Democrats were present, who raised a pole over one hundred Jed high , to which was attached a flag, on which is inscribed in large letters—“SCOTT. GRAHAM AND THF. CONSTITUTION.” The whole affair was condue'ed exclusively by the Democrats. Not a Whig was al lowed to participate in it, although a num ber were present to witness the perform ance. We understand that the Democrats assembled, had a most pleasant and en thusiastic time of it. All seemed to en* , joy themselves, and boasted that there were plenty more of their old political associates that would go for Scott and Graham with as much zeal as themselves.! Harrisburg Telegraph. The Prospect is New York.—Aj sagacious and well-informed friend, says ' the Milwaukee Sentinel, writing from j New Y’ork, closes his letter thus : “ Put! down New York as sure for Scott by a' majority of from 15,000 to 20,000. ’ There’s no mistake about this. The Whigs don’t make as much noise as they did in *4O or ’44 ; but they are working like beavers.” Fromeiery free State but New Hamp shire, and from (lie tried Whig States of the South, we have been advised, “We shall carry this State triumphantly,” or “We can carry this State if we try, and we mean to try.” Possibly Illinois should be classed with New Hampshire, (though we don't think so. j—„Y. Y. Tribune. “Central Scott Cub."—A Scott and Graham Club lias been organized at lowa City under the above name. Its President is Ex-Gov. Lee as. a man whose whole history is identified with the West and who has always been a staunch Dem ocrat. He was formerly Governor of Ohio, a member of Congress for several years from that State, and one of the Electors who cast the vote of Ohio for Jackson. He was appointed Governor of lowa by Mr. Van Buren and served as such for several years. The Ist Vice President of the above Club is Major De Forrest, a gentleman who acted as chair man ot the Polk glorification meeting in 1844. As a picnic party consisting of a large number of young ladies and gentlemen from the town of Stockton, were crossing Casadaga lake, yesterday, at about one and a half o’clock, P. M., in a scow and a skiff, the ladies became frightened and it upset. Those in the scow seeing the accident also became panic stricken and rushed to the side, upset it, and all were j thrown into Ihe water. The boats were forty rods from the nearest shore. No other boats were at hand to assist, and the lake was quite rough. There were five persons in the skiff all of whom were saved; but of nineteen in the scow, sev- j en young ladies were drowned, with the | boatman, who, after rescuing several, per i bed in en leavoring to save the lives of o hers.
