For the Minnesotian. Rev. L. In AUe», Late a Chaplain in the U. S. Army in Mexico under the command of Winfield Scott, and now employed as a Temperance Missionary at large arrived in our Territory accompanied by bis amiable and accomplished lady, on the Black Hawk, and lectured to respectable and interest ed audiences on Monday night in the Baptist Church, Tuesday night in the Methodist Church. Wednesday night before the Society at St. An thony Falk, and Thursday night in the Presby terian Church at St, Paul. On Friday night Mrs. C. Louise Allen lectured in the Baptist Church to a highly intelligent and deeply in terested audience. By a unanimous vote of the St. Anthony Falk Total Abstinence Society, he lectures to-night before them, in the Baptist Church, and Mrs. Allen to-morrow night. *\e take great pleasure in stating that they come highly commended by some of the most influen tial citizens and Societies in the L nion, and their visit among us may l>e hailed as auspicious, and their labors a blessing to our infant Terri tory. Our best wishes accompany them in their future pilgrimage through life’s rough and eventful course. * The Weatfaliachc Zritung publishes a re markable instance of fanaticism, which lately occurred near Bonn, in the beginning of August last: A young theological student of this place (Bonn) went out to Godensburgh. a village four miles south of Bonn, taking with him four nails eight inches long, a hammer and a tile. Having dined at the Hotel Blisner. he walked out into a neighboring grove and sought out a tree which bore some resemblance to a cross, and crucified himself upon it. First be nailed his feet fast to the tree, driving each nail four inches into the wood. He then, after driving a nail into a branch on the right, and tiling its outer extrem ity sharp, nailed his left hand to the opposite branch. Having thus fastened both feet and his left hand to his cross, he struck his right upon the sharpened nail. The first attempt appears to have been unsuccessful, as his hand was sadly torn. Whether, overcome by pain, he now call ed for assistance, or that people by chance pass ed by, it matters not; he was soon after found fainted away, hangingfrom the nails. As, how ever, those who found him had no tools to draw the nails from the tree, they cut it down and carried it iuto the village of Godensberg. Here he was separated from his cross, put on board a steamboat, brought back to Bonn, and placed in the hospital, where he lies in a fair way of re covery. The writer gives the physician who at tended him as his authority, and adds that the facts are well known throughout the city. Spiritual Rappers. —Weekly meetings of the rappers continue at Boston. At the meeting on last Friday evening, says the Mail. Andrew Jackson Davis, the Poughkeepsie seer, came forward, and read to the audience an account of three visions that appeared to him during the present month, lie informed them that St. John told him that Church and State were two thieves, between which truth was crucified, also that in evidence of conversion to spiritualism were seen the increased love manifested by con verts for their fellow-man. Mr. Davis says that In order to be in a lit condition to receive spir itual communications, mediums should have no undigested moat on their stomachs, for himself, he finds nothing better than crackers and cream. Not bad to take. A Fowl Report. — Fairs are not always just what they are ‘cracked up to be.’ For in stance : there was at the Rensselaer Co. Fair last week an unusually large and choice display of Poultry. Now Poultry is one of our most cherished ‘ institutions,' and should not lie tri fled with. Therefore we were surprised to see so faulty and ridiculous a report as the Poultry committee made in the award of premiums.— Here are two or three instances : “R. Howard, of Troy, for best crower and two hens. $3.00 : do, do. Polands, do. do, $3.00: J. Wemple.Trov. game do. $3.00 : George Vail, Troy, turkeys, $3.00 ; L. Edmondson, (large) geese. $3,00 : Mr. Vaughn, one pair of pigeons, i spangled Hamburghs. $3,00." Mr. Howard receives $3, for the •• liest crow- \ tr and two hens." but the committee make no | mention of tlie character of the fowls. The poultry buyer or financier would scarcely know j what to write for if lie wished to purchase a j premium ‘ crower’ or lieu. The next award— s 3 for " do. do. Polands, do. do."’ is a blind one. We doubt if the committee could inter- j pret its meaning. We are not informed what •sort of •• game fowls" Mr. Wemple took a $3 j premium for. nor whether Mr. Vail's turkeys were white, black, wild or domestic. Mr. Ed-1 inondson's geese are lalielled *• large," but whether they are Bremen. African or common. I we are left to guess. But to clap the climax of this precious illustration of the committee's wisdom, we find Mr. Vaughn taking a premium for a pair of spangled Hamburgh pigeons! a creature that has no existence save in the brains of the committee and the record of this report; or if it hat, it will rank ns a most rare speci men of pmiltrydnm—nothing less than half pigeon and half golden I’oland.fowl! We do not dispute the ability of the commit tee to sit in judgment on field pumpkins and short horned Dnrhams. but of Poultry they cer tainly know too little to be useful members of society in thaMlirection. —ilbany Register. Terrible Camiuiene Expuisuin —.l Mother and Child Burnt to Death— The Coroner yester day held an inquest at the house No. 330 Ist avenue, upon the liodies of Mrs. Rebecca Doyle and her infant, a child seven months old. who died on Thursday night by the explosion of a campbene lamp. From the testimony taken, it appears that the husband sf Mrs. Doyle had re turned home unexpectedly on Tuesday night at a late hour, he having on Monday gone to Ward's Island to work, with the expectation of not returning home until 11 ednesduy evening. On entering the house, he was very angry that his wife, who was in bed, bad not prepared tea for him. and finally left the house, but at mid night returned, much intoxicated, and iu a great passion. He still persisted in having his Bupper, and bis wife arose aud prepared it for him. After he had finished eating, he took the light, and was going about the house with it, when it got blown out. Mrs. Doyle relighted and placed it in a bureau, where it soon after burst, scattering the blazing contents in every direction. Tlie deceased with the child in her arms, ran to extinguish the flames, when her clothing and that of her child took fire, and be fore assistance could lie procured, both mother and child were shockingly burned. A physi cian was soon in attendance, and applied suita ble remedies, but the skill proved unavailing, and they died a* above stated. The jury ren dered a verdict on each case, of death by burns accidentally received by the explosion of a cam phene lamp. Mrs. Doyle was a native of Ire land. 34 years of age. It is probable that while Doyle was carrying the lamp about the house, tome of the fluid found its way to the outside, and this was the cause of the explosion. — Jour nal of Commerce. New York— The New York Tribune, in re marking on the Whig State nominations says: “The Whigs are united, enthusiastic and con fident; while thousands who have hitherto op posed us will now vote for Scott <t Graham. We cannot lose New York unless by some ut terly inconceivable treachery or local defection. Stolid apathy might destroy us: but where does It exist? Disaffection might prove disastrous: but who is disaffected? The musses are for ! Scott; the poor and humble love him: the ar dent and patriotic admire him: the Old Guard ; advances to the contest under his banner with resolute confidedce. If the vote of the State is fully brought out, his majority must lie large; if a part of it stay at home, it is not likely to he our part." First Scott Gnu from Tennessee. Nashville, Sept. 27. At the Nashville Municipal Election, the Whig Mayor was elected by 244 majority. — Last year the majority was 25. This vote is a significant indication. Nine Whig and three Democratic Aldermen are elected. Gen. Scott is Virginia.. —Mr. Bolts, who has been traveling through the interior of Virginia, has issued a card, in which he says : “ It may not be improper to add, for the encouragement of the party, that, from all he has seen and beard in his travels, he is satisfied that, with proper and earnest efforts on the part of the Whigs, the SUtv inav be carried for Scott." Circleville, Ohio, Sept. 15. Every thing looks bright for Scott in Ohio, and every day adds strength to our expecta tions of giving him the State. Mark Him ! At the last session of Congress, in the Senate of the United States, William R. King voted iu favor of Douglas' plan for levying duties on Western Commerce. No western man should vote for him. The total mortality among the emigrants a oross the plaius, this year, is estimated by late letter writers from the Salt Lake, at over two thousand. This is. probably, a high estimate. DIED, Testerday morning at two o'clock, of typhoid fever Emily M., only daughter of Mm. E. A. Martin, aged thirteen yearn and elx mouths. Emily was a sweet and gentle child —a girl of great In tellectual promise. We have noted her at school and In the family circle, and predicted for her a high poslUon among the women of Minnesota. But, alas, the re morseless Destroyer ! Well can we say on this occasions “ Death loves a shining mark."
