Hmi. Ode U Major-Oeaenl Winfield Icett. BY MBS. E. C. KINHEY. fTtie following Just tribute to Gen. Scott wa* written In 1849, by Mr*. K. C. Kinney, of this city, now In Italy, and tu published In the National Intelltftencer at the time, and republlehed In tbit and other Journal#. We re produce It now ae being exceedingly appropriate to the occasion, though written without an Idea of Its applica tion to a political objec .—Newark Adv.] Hero of many battle field*, New-wreathed with laurela from afar, Whose arm the sword and olive wield*. A* champlou both of peace and war! Thou art a haugpty nation’s pride— To thee her truest hearts belong, And o’er tho slaves that do thee a rung— Who have tby noble soul decried, In honor’s strength thou towerest strong* When freedom’s eagle from her crag, Waa startled by the din of anna, And to Brltlannla’s li»n flag The war-whoop Joined its wild alarms, Though then no veteran In wars, Thy stately form arose like Mars, And at the valor of thy brow, Cowered the wily Indian’s bow ; While Britaiu In the might of mind. More than her monarch’s glory saw, When waved our banner to the wind Above the plains of Chippewa ! Thy name Is graven on the rocks That brave Niagara’* thunder shocks ; Thy louder fame is evermore Associate of the torrent’* roar— Grand and resistless as the Hood By which tby gallant army stood, When, through the terror’s of the nigh’, The guiding star That led the war Was their tme chieftain’s might! But tho’ Achilles on the flald. In council thou our Nestor art, And for thy deeds of peace we yield Not plaudits only, but the heart; For these have wars the uatlou saved— Her name more lasting honor done, Than all the battles thou hast braved, Than all the victories won. Beyond the MUsUsippi’s Hood Thy name a household word shall be, Joined with the u<»ble and the good While Uvea a grateful Cheiokee. The lion of the forest grows But fiercer when pursued by foes, And, wounded, turns in savage wrath, To stain the bold pursuer’s path : Tet kindly eyes and voices mild, The royal beast of prey can tame, So that tne timid, gentle child May guide It by a fondling name. Thus when the cruel mandate went To qu *ncli the wigwam’s peaceful fires— When a bold savage race was sent From homes and askes of Its sires ! The Indian felt his noble blood Curdle with wrath, as firm be stood, Resolved for light to string the bow, And turned upon his pnk—faetd foe; When, listening for the tyrant's tread, . Behold a silvery voice Instead Fell on his ear like music’s dream, Or Ilka his own wild forest stream ! Hl* weapons fall —his eye is wet— The tallsinaiilc touch of love Hath made him all his threats forget— Hath changed the lion to the dove! Aye, Nature to her chieftain gave True valor in a feeling heart— That could a race subdue to save And act the Christian Conqueror’s part. But hark ! the booming gun calls back Thine arm again the sword to wield ; War’s comet shows Its lurid track. And armies throng the tented field. ’TIs night—and on San Juan’s walls Kcd lightnings burst with dismal glare— Thro* darkness whiz death-freighted balls. And streams of fire Illume the air ! ’TIs morn ! a thick ascending cloud A conquered city doth enshroud; The bulwark, long a nation’s strength, Yields up Its battlements at length, And he —tin? soul of freedom’s wars— Plants there our glorious stripes and stars! Without the great Ulysses mind, Whose skill the wily plot designed— Th’ Achalan hosts, tho* trained In wars, Tno’ countless as the watching stars, Might long In vain have conquest* hoped, The gates of Troy had never oped. And but for that self-moving skill Which to tho need the plan creates, Against us might be fastened still The Imperial city gates. Hero of Mexico ! to thee AH gates, all fortresses give way, And in triumphant pageantry, Through an innumerous conquered foe, Proud in their chief, thine armies go— Hail to the glorious day ! But sweeter sounds await thine ear I Than from victorious bugles come, Bearing familiar words, and dear To the worn warrior, Peace and Home’ Great warrior! tho’ no epic lyre May, kindling with Homeric fire, Thy bold achievements, first and late, In mighty song perpetuate; Thou hast the germ of deathless fame Secure in that uu»ullled name Which shall descend from age to age, Adorning every history’s page. Even now on truth’s subllmest height Thou stand firm In conscious right. And still like some old oak, will stand Where storms thy dauntless soul can brave, .ia Nor ask from fickle Fortune’s hand The proudest boon she ever gave. Yet honored Hero! from afar 1 see tby glory like a star Uising with pure and steadfast glow, Upon a tranquil nation’s brow; There may U rest—not that to thee The place would added lustre give: But, that our country blest may be In honor’s true Executive. An eccentric man in Bath. Maine, was asked to contribute to foreign missions. He gave a quarter or a dollar, but stopped the agent and said, “Here's a dollar to pay the expenses of getting the quarter to the heathen.” - A printer in New York, intending to strike . pfl'a lot of posters announcing a large Tea Sale in the city, printed them with “ Sea Tale," for a head, which tilled the auction-room with reg ular tars, ready to hear the particulars. Smithers, on going home the other night, was run against by a three story house, which was chasing a lamp-post up Canal street. On com ing to, he thus reasoned with himself: “Is that mud. (hiccup.) W hon we left he was trying to per spade a free stone stoop that it was unconstitu tional to leave awning-posts out of doors after nightfall. A Startling Recipe. —The last Knickerbock er, in a letter from a retired correspondent at a watering-place, has the following : Venturing the other day to ask my landlady now she made certain fine sausages, she rather electrified me by turning rapidly upon me, and beginning: "Take your in arils, scald 'em scrape 'em, aud stud 'em!’’ 1 changed the sulv ject. She says she can t eat them herself, in consequence of the •asti<luilu of her stum mick: ’ An auctioneer was selling a lot of land for agricultural purposes. -Gentlemen,” said he. this is the most delightful laud. P. MURRAY, Esq, The duly authorized Agent for this Company: By the establishment, 2fi years since of a central office at Cincinnati, for the prompt settlement of western and south western losses, a careful selection of risks, the most unremitting attention to their dispersion, and prudence and economy in all Its transactions, the officers of this Compa ny have had the satisfaction of seeing the usefulness and prosperity constantly upon the increase during a long pe riod of years. Many other Companies have in the MEANTIME FAILED TO DISCHARGE THEIR JUST LI ABILITIES, HAVING BEEN WEAKENED AND FINALLY RENDERED BANKRUPT, BY A RECKLESS COURSE OF BUSINESS. Insurance Companies of this stamp and character are continually springing up in various parts of the country. It is not our purpose (by accepting premiums inade quate TO COVER TME AVERAGE ANNUAL LOSS) to compete with such Irresponsible offices, whose object would seem to be to collect a considerable sum from the opera tion* ©f one or two seasons, divide the proceeds, and pay their losses, or not, as expediency may dictate. Among the diseases to which this wonderful Ointment is adapted are the fol lowing : Glandular swellings, ague in the face, swelled breasts and sore nipples of nursing women, bronchitis, felons and ring worms, scald head, and is an invaluable dressing for bums, scalds and drawn blisters, shingles, erysipelas, piles, intlamatlon of the eyes yields to Its power immediately; all bmi sees and fresh cut wounds are cured with great rapidity, fever sores and scrottulous sores are soon changed Into a healing condition, and frequenly entirely cured. GRAKFENBERG DYSENTERY SYRUP. Tl»ls celebrated and unrivalled medicine is of immediate efficacy in the most violent and obstinate cases of dysen tery, diarrhoea, bloody flux, Asiatic cholera, cholera mor bus, cholera infantum, looseness of the bowels, gripings and all other irregularities of the intestines. The causes of the above various complaints are various, sometimes they are atmospheric; sometimes they arise from the eating of unripe or unwholesome food from the use of river water; sometimes from'a natural predisposition of the system; sometimes from teething children are frequently affected without any noticeable cause. But no matter what the origin, this syrup is sov reign, in the most sickly tropical countries as well as the most temperate climes. The following directions should be carefully observed. Unlike all other medicines oiiered for similar complaints, tills syrup acts specifically upon the secretions, restoring them at once to health. Other dysen tary medicines merely allay the more violent symptoms— THIS CURES! THE GRAEFEXBERG CONSUMPTIVE BALM. It Is beyond all question true that the Consumption (phthisic pulmonaris) Is a curable disease. Some of the ablest medical writers assert this; among whom we may cite the celebrated names of lienee, Andral, Cruvll lier, Stokes and Williams. Their researches, as well as the more recent ones of Kogec and Boudct, that so far from pulmonary tubercle being necessarily fatal, ills spon taneously cured by uature in a vast number of cases, even when large ulcers have been formed on the lungs. The great object, Is to arrest the progress of the ulcers (or tubercles) upon the lungs, and to heal them perma nently. Health will then follow. This the Graefenberg Consumptive Balm will do, and It Is believed to be the only remedy ever discovered, it acts at once uj»on the tubercles and invariably arrests their progress, ami restores the lungs to soundness. It will not of course replace those lN>rtlons of the lungs already consumed, but It will heal what may lie left; leaving the individual in health, though It may be with dimiuished lungs. DR. LIBBY’S CELEBRATED PILE OINTMENT. As prepared for the Graefcnberg Company, and bearing the s**al of that institution. None genuine unless it has the seal of the company. A CURE IS WARRANTED. This is a sufficient argument to induce everv person suf fering under this disease to try it. The money will be im mediately refunded if a cure does not result irum its use according to directions. THE GRAEFEXBERG EYK-LOTIOX For disorders of the eye tills lotion has no equal; It is com pounded upon the most scientific principles, and ha. per formed extraordinary cures. For violent imluinatiou, dim n -ss and failing of the sight, weakness of the eyes, invol untary weeping, foreign substances in the eyes, etc., it is a positive and speedy cure. GRAEFEXBERG CHILDREN’S PANACEA. A m«>st strange and incredible fact m :ets as at the very threshold of our remarks on this valuable medicine. It is this : that no medicine prepared adapted to the various dis eases of children and youth has ever been offered to the public, while at the same time It is established by the most accurate tables of mortality that one-half of the hu man family die before reaching the age of five years. We should suppose that to this great class of human suf ferers —this one-lialf of the race—the most anxious and earnest attention would have boon given; that medical skill would have been tasked to its utmost capacity to find out a medicine to which mothers and nurses might resort under the constantly recurring necessities which present themselves in this connection. The world is literallv crowded with medicines for adults, hut to thesufl’ering o*f children no one has seemed to turn proper attention. No one has regarded their condition. No one has seemed to think it possible that the ravages of disease and death among them might be stayed, it is true that there are numerous Vermifuges and Cordials of s.*me value, but each of these arc confined exclusively to one or two form* of <1 Ikpasc. The HraefenTierg Children's Panacea is the only medicine extant to either hemisphere that is at all worthy of being called a Children’* Medicine; or that sup plies the great want alluded to. GRAEFENBKRG VEGETABLE PILLS. Ilielori/ of the Graefenbrrg Vegetable Pills—Perfec tion the result of undivided attention. The Inventor of these Pills, possessing a long .nil inti mate ac luaintanee with the human system, and with the numerous medicines to which medical men usually resort, studied for many long and wearisome vears upon the sin gle proposition how to prepare a PILL whlcl. would act In harmony with the great laws of Nature, and expel dlseua-s without doing violence to the system.
