La Crosse and Milwaukee Raii.-Road.— Moses M. Strong, the President of tins Road, addressed the citizens of our place one evening last week. He detailed the modus opt randi u grecd upon by the Directors in conducting the enterprise, told what had been done, ami w hat remained to be done, and represented the pro ject as very feasible. At present prices, the difference again*! the contractors upon the St. Bouis and Cincinnati road, if the iron were purchased now, would lie $600,000. This loss is enormous, and if no change in the market shall occur, may result in creating serious ob stacles to the progress of the work. Indeed!—TheN. V. Post says that Mr. Pierce is badly pestereel by the office-hunters. They come up to Concord as the Irogs came upon Egypt. They seek an interview with the Presi dent elect, which “ usually begins with the re mark, that Gen. Pierce owed his nomination or his election, one or both, directly or indirectly, to the agency of the unpretending individual who is speaking. We have understood that more persons have already claimed the credit of having nominated him than there were memlters of the Convention that nominated him The Post further says:—•• Every im aginable device is employed to impose upon him. No one tells him the truth. No one means w hat he says, or says w hat he means. Canal Lands.— There has been considerable activity lately in the business of entering land at the Land < Uliee in this place, since the ap pointment of the Commissioners for selecting the Canal Lands. Mining Companies and indi viduals are picking up valuable tracts, and such as will be most needed in connection with their mining operations ami other business.— No selection has been made as yet in this Dis trict, by the Agents of the State, of the lands appropriated for this work, but it is understood that the principal portion of 750,000 acres granted for the construction of this canal is to lie taken from this District, and that these se lections are to be made before spring. —Lake Superior Journal.
